If I lose a loved one in a terrorist attack, I am sadden and deeply hurt, and the land of the attack becomes holy ground, the Constitution should be suspended. If a Christian is the perpetrator then the protections of the Constitution do not apply to any Christians. If a Muslim is the perpetrator then the protections of the Constitution do not apply to any Muslims. If a ____ is the perpetrator of the attack then no ____ individual is protected by the Constitution.
What kind of Constitutional democracy do we have when the grief of families and friends of the victims can suspend the Constitution, when all members of a group are stigmatized by the acts of a few, and we act just like the savages in totalitarian states.
We bullshit ourselves when we say we are in the land of the free.
To oppose the Muslim mosque or center to be built two blocks from the tower site unfair, unjust, and if the Muslim backers back out they were bullied. Are we a nation of bullies?
Shame, shame, shame bullying folk.
As for the sensitivities of the protesting families of the victims, friends, and other Americans who protest the placement of the Muslim center, get the freak over it.
I am tired of mollycoddling you.
We were attacked: it hurt personally; it hurt nationally; it hurt psychologically. Get over it. If you can’t alone, seek help from family, clergy, psychology, psychiatry, prayer or meditation.
Act like adults who know the value of our Constitution.
Don't suspend the Constitution for grief, hurt, fear, dread, or any trauma.
I trust the Cats, Herding old cats, and Piggieheart and don't need to know what the product is right now. I know it's not illegal, immoral, or fattening.
Intuition informs me.
The other matter, this blog and its opinions from various folk. I have never been even cautioned about what I've said. And I have either crossed the line or pushed mightily on it a few times. I also shout my dissatisfaction with President Obama, and sure I am that they disagree, or believe my criticism unfair, untempered by acknowledgement of his accomplishments.
The only governor on what I write and post here is my gut and brain. The rant stays.
Instead of automatic censorship, they err on the side of freedom of speech.
I have a Thanksgiving story for your consumption that has nothing to do with turkeys or pumpkin pie or crazy uncles.
Instead, in an effort to remind you what this holiday can really stand for, we’ll meet some people who are thankful today for simply being free.
It’s a short story today, but an especially touching one, so follow along and we’ll take a little hop across the Atlantic for a trip you should not miss.
Defending and protecting the Constitution is finally coming back into vogue. After 9/11/2001, the Constitution fell from favor in Washington and much of the country. George W. Bush said "freedom and fear are at war." They sure were. What he didn't tell us is that he was on the side of fear, which the Republicans wielded very effectively to influence elections, increase executive power, and generally run roughshod over the Constitution. Thankfully, it looks like the Democratic party is finally ready to put protecting the Constitution front and center again.
Because if you are ready for change, then you can elect a president who has taught the Constitution, and believes in the Constitution, and will obey the Constitution of the United States of America. -- Houston, TX, February 19, 2008.
And then there's the FISA victory in the House of Representatives last week -- a triumph of freedom over fear. From Crooks and Liars:
Do we have any privacy left? Apparently not. "They" can download software onto your cell phone to turn it into a microphone -- even when the phone appears to be off. The only way to be sure is to remove the battery pack. Motorola Razr, Nextel and Samsung handsets are especially vulnerable to these downloads.
Apparently I'm among the last to find this out, because "Security-conscious corporate executives routinely remove the batteries from their cell phones." I hope the FBI enjoys the sound of me rummaging around in my purse.
The U.S. Commerce Department's security office warns that "a cellular telephone can be turned into a microphone and transmitter for the purpose of listening to conversations in the vicinity of the phone." An article in the Financial Times last year said mobile providers can "remotely install a piece of software on to any handset, without the owner's knowledge, which will activate the microphone even when its owner is not making a call."
