Add Mike "Do Nothing" Rogers to the growing list of Congressmen who will co-sponsor Crazy Michele Bachmann's repeal bill HR 4903 which is titled To repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
"The majority of folks in East Alabama let me know they didn't want this health care bill to pass," Rogers said. "While the bill has now become law, it is not too late to repeal and replace the worst parts of this legislation, which will vastly increase the Federal government's role in our lives at a time when our economy is in a severe recession."
"During these tough economic times when folks are struggling to stay afloat and find or keep a job, I agree reform was needed. But this is not reform - it is a massive government intervention into one-sixth of our economy.
Rogers said he supports alternative legislation which would help offer coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, allow association health plans, allowing insurance to be sold across state lines, increasing the age in which children can be covered by their parent's plan, and tort reform to help lower the cost of frivolous lawsuits.
Rogers has a habit of saying some rather ridiculous things, but I thought he was the more moderate of the Alabama Republican delegation. Certainly would not have expected him to be the first to sign on in this bill. Perhaps that's just because outside of AL-07 this district is the most Democratic leaning in the State. Surely Rogers can back up his claims that East Alabama doesn't want this with some poll numbers. Snark
I have laid out the foundation of my platform in three preliminary issue stances. Below each issue, you can even endorse my position and send me a comment. (I love getting endorsements, especially yours.)
Using the “Tell a Friend” page, you can easily spread the word about our campaign.
I am excited about the upcoming months of the campaign. The people of Alabama deserve an independent leader who will break the partisan paralysis in Washington.
Thanks for your support.
I'm glad he's starting to focus more on social media. That's becoming a much more important tool for campaigns. As voters trust media, ads, and even candidates less, they do still trust their friends. I like it when a candidate makes it easy for me to distribute information about them on blogs or Facebook.
After you enjoy the new Web site, send Josh some $$ to help him defeat Mike Rogers!
The candidate with the most money doesn't always win, but the candidate who runs out of money always loses. We need to help our candidates raise ENOUGH money to be competitive. If you haven't already given, today is the very best time to help a progressive Democrat because contributions made today show up on their 4th quarter fundraising report and SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS. The more they raised in 2009, the more people will want to give them in 2010. Hey, it's human nature, everybody wants to climb on a bandwagon.
First up, if you're unhappy that no candidate has emerged in AL-05, please give to Josh Segall, the genuine progressive Democrat who has been doing the very hard work of persuading AL-03 voters that Democrats are not looney, socialist, America-haters like they hear on the radio, but hard working Americans who care about our fellow citizens. Running against an incumbent is not easy and Josh has been tirelessly campaigning against the Republican noise machine personified by Mike Rogers. He's at the top of my list of Democrats Worth Investing In. Please consider making a contribution of $25, $50, $100, $250, or whatever you are able to give.
Jeremy Sherer, candidate for Alabama State Treasurer, is next on my must give list. Sherer is seeking the spot currently abused by Treasurer Kay Ivey (R) who is at the center of the PACT debacle. Sherer is another hard worker -- he's attended just about every Save our PACT meeting from one end of the state to the other. I've heard all three candidates for this office speak about PACT problems and there's no question Sherer is the smartest and best informed of the bunch. Please help Jeremy Sherer with a contribution if you can.
Sherer in 2010 112 Adams Avenue West Oneonta, AL 35121
Susan Pace Hamill is running for State House district 63 in the Tuscaloosa area. Hamill is a long time champion of tax reform in Alabama and a Good Investment for your progressive contributions. She's very close to raising $100,000 for her year-end filing which is important towards attracting support from other big players next year. Some are saying this could be the ugliest and most expensive house race in recent memory. Give to Susan Pace Hamill for a better Alabama!
If you believe that a new Alabama is being born, and you want to join the growing numbers of Alabamians who are ready to take state government back for all of us, it's important that you give before midnight tomorrow.
Davis is running on a platform that includes sweeping ethics reform and support for a new constitution -- pretty progressive stuff for an Alabama candidate.
Sparks is running on a platform that includes an education lottery and regulation/taxation of gambling.
The Congressional candidates in AL-07 are all in need of support -- I can't say which is the most or least progressive. Perhaps some smart, local commenters will chime in:

Big Pharma has launched a major television ad campaign on behalf of Republican incumbent Mike Rogers in Alabama's 3rd Congressional District. The ads are running throughout the sprawing East Alabama district and claim that "Mike Rogers supports innovative research that makes us healthier." What a crock! Rogers supports his own incumbency ... and his big donors.
Why are they spending so much money on Rogers now? Apparently they're worried that "their boy Mike" might not dodge the bullet this time, facing a better organized, better funded challenge from Josh Segall who came within a few points of knocking him off last year.
Segall says ...
The claim is false, like so many claims Rogers made about me in the last campaign.
...
The country is engaged in an epic health care debate and the cost of medical care is at the heart of it.
...
The SINGLE LARGEST source of unnecessary health care cost in America is prescription drugs. We pay more for prescription drugs than any country on earth. The Pharmaceutical Industry is one of the most heavily subsidized industries in the country even though it has been the country's most profitable industry for thirty years. The first place to start cutting health care cost is prescription drugs.
...
I believe strongly that we must invest in innovative research to find cures to debilitating and painful illnesses. But most new medical treatments come from public universities not the private prescription drug industry. The Pharmaceutical Industry has increasingly spent money on lifestyle drugs and marketing for those drugs rather than cures for the country's worst illnesses. The industry has focused more on finding marginal uses for old drugs than critically important advances.
The pharmaceutical industry spends billions to convince us otherwise and Mike Rogers is another way for them to do it.
...
I am a pro-business Democrat. I believe in our capitalist system and I don't criticize corporations for the sake of political gain. But pharmaceutical companies have violated a public trust and set up an entitlement system that does not serve the public good. Help me by making a contribution and I'll speak plainly about it in Congress.
(More and Better Democrats! Josh is one! Send him some love... - promoted by herding old cats)
Dropped by a fundraiser for Josh Segall tonight - our endorsed candidate in AL-03. Josh nearly beat do-nothing Mike Rogers in 2008. Unfortunately, I had to leave early to get to another appointment and did not get to stay and record his speech.
Josh is raising money all over the state this week. Monday in Anniston. Last night and tonight in Birmingham. Tomorrow in Huntsville. He's working hard to help us get rid of Rogers.
Worried seniors + disingenuous Congressman = violence at retirement home.
Mike Rogers (R, AL-03) can't keep the lid on town hall meeting at a retirement home! Way to look like a leader, Congressman. Brittany Whitley of the Auburn-Opelika News offers a first hand account:
When the meeting ended, I got up to gather names and ask a few more questions. Right behind me, the man involved in the initial confrontation was swinging at another man. He hit him, and after a scuffle, was pulled off. People quickly began to leave. As I was walking out, one man confronted me, saying I didn’t need to put what I had just seen in the paper.
The instigator was apparently anti-reform -- Whitley says early in the meeting another reform opponent stood up and said "I'm not here to make nice." No kidding. If you can't win the argument with facts, there's always fists.
These were older people, almost certainly concerned by widespread misinformation on rationing, death panels and so forth. Instead of reassuring them with actual facts and calming the situation down, Mike Rogers let it escalate to the point of violence -- or maybe even helped it along.
I understand the Congressman addressed the death panel rumor by pointing out the largest health care costs are associated with the last 2 years of life, so when the government needs to cut costs, you can expect the cuts to come from there.
Without credit, Meadowcraft, Inc. which employs 600 people in Wadley and 800 people in Selma will go under tomorrow, for the last time. They're facing liquidation, closing the plants, probably forever. Two Alabama communities already struggling with high unemployment and poverty rates will be further devastated. Stuart Appelbaum is president of the 100,000-member Retail, Wholesale Department Store Union, UFCW that represents some Meadowcraft employees. He made these remarks at a Rally to Save Meadowcraft Jobs in Roanoke, Alabama this morning.
The other day, when I looked at the list of all the leaders who’ve endorsed this program, it occurred me that some people may be scratching their heads trying to figure out whether this is a Democratic protest, or a Republican protest, or an Independent protest. Well, I think the answer to that is “all of the above.”Because destroying the jobs of Alabama workers isn’t a matter of left and right. It’s a question of right and wrong. That’s why we’re today.
We’re here because we believe it is wrong -- morally wrong -- for Wells Fargo to turn its back on Meadowcraft and the men and women who work there. We’re here because we believe it’s wrong -- morally wrong -- for a bank that received $25 billion tax dollars last year, to take food off the tables of Alabama families this year. And we’re here because we know that it’s wrong to rob the employees and managers of Meadowcraft of the opportunity they deserve to turn their company around!
At a time when 15 million Americans are out of work -- including more than 215,000 Alabamians -- it’s up to business and labor to work together and do whatever it takes to protect good jobs and to create new ones.
As president of the RWDSU I can tell you that we are always ready to do our part to help employers compete and win. And, you know something? I’m convinced that a lot of employers are willing to roll up their sleeves and work with unions, too. But, at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if we do our part if corporations like Wells Fargo refuse to do theirs.
That’s why our message to Wells Fargo is that it’s not too late -- there’s still time for you to choose to do the right thing. There's still time for you to save Meadowcraft.
Our message to Wells Fargo is that when your earnings are up 47 percent over a year ago there's no excuse for you not to save Meadowcraft!
Brothers and sisters, our message to Wells Fargo is that just as the American taxpayer gave you a second chance last year, it’s your responsibility to give Alabama workers a second chance this year!
Applebaum gets it exactly right. This isn't a partisan issue -- it's a moral issue that pits American workers against corporate profits. In this case, the profits of a corporation who got a $25 billion dollar bailout from the taxpayer and now won't lend that money out to a manufacturer. Meadowcraft isn't looking for a handout, they just need a line of credit.
Everyone tells us the economy is bad and credit is tight, but the economic crisis is personal for thirteen hundred people in Central Alabama. Plantation Patterns, a subsidiary of Meadowcraft, Inc. with plants in Wadley and Selma has been in bankruptcy since March 20 and may permanently close their doors on Friday. In Wadley, the company employs about 500 people making wrought iron furniture in a town with a population of less than 650. There is no other industry in town and Mayor Jim Dabbs says the loss of Meadowcraft jobs would devastate Wadley.
"Other than Meadowcraft, we have a couple of restaurants, gas stations and Southern Union Community College."
Making matters even worse, Meadowcraft owes the city of Wadley around $168,000 in unpaid utility bills. In addition to the Wadley plant, Meadowcraft also employs approximately 800 people at a plant in Selma, Alabama where they make soft goods such as cushions and umbrellas. Over 20% of people in Randolph County (where Wadley is located) live below the poverty level. For Dallas County (home to Selma) the figure is 30%.
Meadowcraft's problem isn't slow sales. Nope. The company has orders for furniture. What they lack is cash. Unfortunately, Jerry Camp, former president, and Larry Maynor, chief financial officer, were dismissed last March in the wake of "accounting irregularities," leaving the company with unpaid bills and a shortage of cash. As in, struggling to meet payroll and unable to pay creditors -- some of whom forced Meadowcraft into involuntary bankruptcy.
Meadowcraft has orders. They have equipment. They have workers. There's no question this is a viable business. The problem is they can't get credit to continue operating until the current management can purchase the business.
And who can't they get credit from? Wells Fargo/Wachovia -- who accepted $25 billion in federal Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) money just a few months ago. I don't know how much Meadowcraft needs, but I'll bet Wells Fargo Chairman's 2007 compensation of $22,874,952 would make a healthy dent in it.
I heard about the plight of Wadley from Democratic congressional candidate Josh Segall, who also told me there will be a Rally to Save Meadowcraft Jobs Thursday morning at 9 am in Roanoke. If anyone is in the neighborhood with a camera, please send pictures. Details of the rally are at the end of this post.
(Short answer: NO. Rogers is a do-nothing incumbent who needs to be voted out in 2010. - promoted by mooncat)
I just saw a video where Mike Rogers (R, AL-03) complains about government spending. Gee, I wish Mike Rogers of July 16th, 2009 could have a talk with Mike Rogers of January 12th, 2007 that voted against allowing the government to negotiate for lower prices as part of Medicare Part D. That's just a giveaway to pharmaceutical companies. Yes Mike, government billions given away by you.
"The Veterans Administration, which is allowed to negotiate drug prices and establish a formulary, pays 58% less for drugs, on average, than Medicare Part D."
Or he could talk to the Mike Rogers that voted for $100 Billion in war appropriations funding for Iraq and Afghanistan on May 24th 2007 (These wars were given a long term CBO score of $2.4 Trillion, almost 2 and 1/2 times the cost of the healthcare reform that Mike is whining about). Not to mention he voted to extend the Bush tax cuts on 5/10/06 (estimated cost $1.8 Trillion).
Lets talk about some other government spending, like your paycheck. What are we getting for it? Six months in and Mike Rogers hasn't turned a new leaf to get anything done. Even his press releases can't make it sound like he's accomplished anything this term.
I'm tired of this do-nothing Congressman, lets get Josh Segall in there. Donate to Joshua Segall for Congress, no donation is too small (even $5 sends a message)
I hope Congressman Mike Rogers (AL-03) is looking forward to retirement or a lucrative career as an industry lobbyist - or any future that doesn't include a seat in the US House of Representatives.
Josh Segall, who is making another run at Rogers in 2010, announced that he has hired Chad Horrell as campaign manager. Horrell brings an enormous amount of campaign experience and field organizing know-how to the Segall campaign.
From Segall's press release:
Chad oversaw the national party's field programs for every targeted race in the South, from Virginia to Florida to Texas. He worked with the country's strongest candidates, many of whom went to Congress, and orchestrated some of the largest efforts their districts had ever seen to have conversations with voters at their doorstep.
This is exactly what we intend to do in this campaign ...
It's an indication - as if we needed one - that Segall will be a much more formidable candidate this cycle than in 2008. Not because he's changing his positions on the issues, but because he's finally attracting the attention of the national party, its candidate support structure, and fundraising assistance.
Congratulations to Josh Segall and a big Alabama welcome to Chad Horrell too.
It's official! Josh Segall is making another run at Mike Rogers in Alabama's 3rd Congressional district. After an amazingly close race in 2008, Segall is already attracting more state and national attention.
Expect this race to be on everyone's "hot list."
Segall's announcement email states:
Because of our success last cycle, our race this cycle will be one of the nation's most high-profile. That means more time, focus and outreach to spread our message of economic growth and prosperity for Alabama and for rural areas all over the country. With national exposure and with your continued advice and generosity, I believe, to my core, that we will win this race.
From your email, to the voters' ears and pocketbooks, Josh!
There are just eight days left in this reporting period, but that's plenty of time to give Segall a big financial boost. Click here to donate!
On the flip, you can watch clips from his 2008 debate with Mike Rogers. If that won't open your wallet, nothing will...
Updated:Added a video of the Segall/Rogers debate. Josh has some great points about developing rural Alabama. It's on the flip.
"For that kind of payroll, the city fathers would tie a big red bow around City Hall and hand it over."
Addie Pray makes this droll observation in the novel, Paper Moon. Set in depression-era Alabama, it details the activities of two lovable con artists. In this instance, the pair is scamming small towns by promising to build a paper mill with a payroll of 120 people.
In some parts of Alabama - specifically Perry County and other black belt communities - it's like the Depression never ended.
Now, in 2010, the promise of greater prosperity is much worse than a paper mill. It's TVA coal ash, and the city fathers County Commission is actually excited by the possibility of accepting 15,000 tons of toxic coal ash laden with heavy metals into their county every day.
Army Reserve Specialist Charles Graner is still in jail, but his company commander, Captain Christopher Brinson, not only isn't in jail, he's working for Congressman Mike Rogers (R, AL-03) as Deputy Chief of Staff. No one higher than Graner has been punished for the shocking mistreatment of prisoners at Abu Ghraib, but it's especially apalling that Brinson is now in a position of power in an Alabama Congressman's office where he pulled down $99,279.30 in 2008.
Graner noted in the M.P. logbook that he had instructions from a lieutenant colonel to strip the newcomers, and to subject them to a routine of rough calisthenics designed to disorient, exhaust, terrify, and humiliate them, and to cause them pain. This was standard practice on the M.I. block, and Graner set to work. When one of the prisoners resisted, Graner later told Army investigators, “I bashed him against the wall.”
...
When his company commander, Captain Christopher Brinson, and one of Brinson’s deputies, Master Sergeant Brian Lipinski, stopped by, Graner said, he made the other prisoners crawl to their cells while Brinson and Lipinski watched.
...
Graner interpreted their presence to be “implied consent that this was all O.K.,” he said. In fact, two days later, Brinson, who in civilian life is a top aide to Representative Mike Rogers, Republican of Alabama, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued a Developmental Counselling Form to Graner. Such a form is normally used for reprimands, but what Brinson wrote sounded more like a commendation: “CPL Graner, you are doing a fine job. . . . You have received many accolades. . . . Continue to perform at this level and it will help us succeed at our overall mission.”
It's obvious to the meanest understanding that the enlisted men and women took the fall for Abu Ghraib while the chain of command, from Brinson all the way to Rumsfeld and Cheney, got off without even a slap on the hand. Even so, it's flaunting it a bit for Mike Rogers to give Graner's commander "oversight of all legislative and Appropriations operations and Homeland Security." Rogers and his ilk are all about "supporting the troops," except when they choose to support their pals and let the troops go to jail.
We know Mike Rogers is an Iraq War cheerleader. He supported President Bush's mistaken war every chance he got. But does he support torture? He voted No on limiting harsh interrogation techniques torture to the army field manual. He signed the statement that
"First, the United States does not torture, and the intelligence community conducts itself in accordance with the law, including the treaty obligations of the United States. The Committee has been briefed on the interrogation techniques currently being used by the Intelligence Community, and has conducted intensive oversight of both the underlying policy and its application."
There are a lot of weasel words in there like does and currently.
We know Rogers supports someone who ordered torture; Christopher Brinson, his campaign and congressional chief of staff. A man who's name may be coming up more often in the news, as his underling Charles Graner Jr, attempts to negotiate his ten year sentence.
"Prison guards jailed for abusing inmates at the Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq are planning to appeal against their convictions on the ground that recently released CIA torture memos prove that they were scapegoats for the Bush Administration."
I just received Rep. Mike Rogers' (R, AL-03) latest email newsletter celebrating his doings in -- and theoretically on behalf of -- the Third District. It included this line which puzzled me for a while - emphasis mine.
At an event at Auburn Montgomery, students were interested in hearing about the increasing partisanship in Congress.
Increasing partisanship? Is this Congress really more partisan than under Tom Delay or Newt Gingrich? No, it is not. However, as a member of the Party of NO, Rogers is on the losing side of partisan votes nowadays so I'm sure it does feel more partisan. Whines and the whining whiners who whine, you know.
... it is apparent that Segall views running for Congress as a hobby, and not a serious effort that impacts the lives of hardworking Alabamians. It is unfortunate that Josh Segall is injecting politics at a time when the rest of the Nation is focused on rallying our economy.
As an unknown, so-called "hobby" candidate, Josh Segall raised a million dollars and came within 6 points of beating incumbent Mike Rogers last November in a state Barack Obama lost by over 20 points. Geez, imagine if Segall had been serious in 2008 instead of just a "hobbyist."
Actually, save your imagination because Segall is back for 2010 -- more experienced, better financed, smarter and just as concerned about the future of the Alabamians in the third district. No longer a "hobby" candidate -- like he ever was -- I think we'll see the second time's the charm for Josh Segall. Mike Rogers better start looking for a hobby, 'cause he's going to have a lot more free time starting in January 2011.
Somebody call the DCCC -- we've got a serious Democrat running in AL-03 and he deserves some serious support this time.
(So many great reasons to support Josh Segall for Congress! Oh, and I added this great "farm" photo. - promoted by countrycat)
Joshua Segall may be the first ever Farmers' Market Candidate for Congress. He runs a program called Homegrown Alabama that focuses on getting schools to buy their food from farmers.
Joshua was defeated in his first attempt to unseat Bush-Republican Representative Mike Rogers last fall. But this week the rematch was announced
"It's time for a new direction. I am a fiscal conservative who will work to create and attract 21st Century jobs to east Alabama so that hardworking people can get ahead," said Segall.
"Alabama is suffering under irresponsible policies that bail out greedy executives who created this mess and leave hardworking Alabama families holding the bag. Rogers supported the Wall Street bailout, but did nothing for Main Street Alabama. He voted to send Alabama jobs overseas, when what we needed was a plan to create good jobs at home. It's time to stand up to special interest politics and put Alabama families first once again," said Segall.
The Federal Election Commission released quarterly disclosure reports today, and Mike Rogers' offering left Alabama political junkies wondering what's going on.
Rogers' FEC report shows that he raised just $24,760 from individuals during the first quarter of this year. PACs were more generous - but not much. Rogers received $35,000 in PAC contributions. His cash on hand at the end of March was just $34,522.
Numbers like this must have Josh Segall smiling. Segall came within just a few points of beating Rogers last November and just announced his intention to run again in 2010.
Other Alabama Representatives haven't been setting the fundraising world on fire either: Jo Bonner raised just $87k, Everett just $1900, and Spencer ("I have in my hand a list!") Bachus reported a NEGATIVE $24k
But all those guys have half a million or more in the bank, while Rogers reports barely enough to buy a new car - much less a House seat in a competitive district.
One wonders.... is Rogers truly interested in doing the best job for his constituents and keeping that job? Or is he just trimming this term, with the intention of cashing in on a plum lobbying job after 2010?
Maybe the prospect of a rematch with Josh Segall - and the prospect of serious DCCC money flowing in is just too much for the boy to handle....
Look out Mike Rogers (R, AL-03) that bullet you dodged last November is coming around again -- more experienced, better known and, hopefully, with more institutional backing this time. Quoting the Segall press release:
“It’s time for a new direction.I am a fiscal conservative who will work to create and attract 21st Century jobs to east Alabama so that hardworking people can get ahead,” said Segall.
“Alabama is suffering under irresponsible policies that bail out greedy executives who created this mess and leave hardworking Alabama families holding the bag.Rogers supported the Wall Street bailout, but did nothing for Main StreetAlabama. He voted to send Alabama jobs overseas, when what we needed was a plan to create good jobs at home. It’s time to stand up to special interest politics and put Alabama families first once again,” said Segall.
“Rural Alabama has been suffering for a long time and this recession has made it so even fewer of our children can live where they grew up. Rural areas all over the country need to be reinvigorated. I will work with Members of Congress who represent similar districts to make rural areas strong again.”
In case you weren't around for the AL-03 contest in 2008, Josh Segall is a young lawyer from Montgomery, Alabama who came out of nowhere and almost picked off a sitting Congressman -- well, Rogers isn't much of a Congressman, but he still enjoys the perks of incumbency -- with a well executed grassroots campaign.
By my count, Segall is getting into the race about 10 months earlier than he did in the 2008 cycle. Coupled with his already good name recognition in the district, that extra time should position him very well to finish the job against Rogers in 2010. Per opensecrets.org, Segall raised right at a million dollars in the 2008 cycle compared to Rogers'$1.4 million and he garnered almost 47% of the vote. He even outraised Rogers for a couple of reporting periods and forced Rogers to outspend him two to one -- that's a perk of incumbency, for sure. It was a stunning effort considering that Segall started with almost zero name recognition, no money and never had substantive support from the DCCC because they were busy spending a million or so in AL-02 and AL-05. Given the conservative voting record of those Blue Dogs they shouldn't need a dime of DCCC money to keep their seats next year no matter how right leaning their districts are. The time is ripe for the DCCC to target Rogers' district the way they targeted AL-02 and AL-05 last cycle and Segall is the perfect candidate to do the job in this East Alabama district.
Welcome back to the fray, Josh! May the best man win.
