Kim Drake for Alabama Court of Civil Appeals

The final hours of this Election Year tick away. Some elections seem all ready decided. Others are not. Every one worth their salt is going to keep working until the last vote is counted.

The Alabama Court of Civil Appeals holds jurisdiction over appeals in workmen's compensation cases and domestic relations cases. This includes child custody cases, divorce, annulment, child support, adoption and alimony.

Kim Drake, of the Drake Law Firm in Cullman, a mother and business woman who represents the best of Alabama and truly believes in our values. Kim Drake’s opponent is William Thompson.

Kim’s Campaign;

On Tuesday, Oct. 21st, Kim Drake appeared at the Democratic Judicial Fundraiser and Candidate forum. This event was held at the Birmingham Botanical Garden’s. She appeared along side Clyde Jones (Court of Criminal Appeals, Place No. 1), Aimee Cobb Smith (Court of Criminal Appeals, Place No. 2) and Deborah Bell Paseur (State Supreme Court). Congressman Artur Davis (7th Congressional District of Alabama) spoke. It was a good event and offered a good chance for Kim to meet people.

Kim has conducted interviews with the Cullman Times, Huntsville Times, Birmingham News, Mobile Press-Register and WVAS-FM. Kim Drake, her husband Tom Drake, Campaign Manager Robert Sullivan and other supporters have been hammering up signs to everything vertical in the state that can have a nail driven into it.

TV ads supporting Kim began airing this weekend. Last weekend, Campaign Manager Robert Sullivan attended the Birmingham Magic City Classic and distributed campaign materials for Kim at the event. A special thanks goes out to John Powe and the Obama Headquarters in Jefferson County for letting us tag along.

And during all of this, Tom and Kim Drake continue to work and operate as parents, lawyers fighting for the little guy, and people of sincere faith.

Mobile Voter Registration Drive - Photo Diary

by: cishart

Mon Jul 28, 2008 at 12:38:11 PM CDT

(OK y'all, get inspired and go register some voters. - promoted by mooncat)

Conventional wisdom labels Alabama a hopelessly red state. That may be true, but one thing's for certain: Barack Obama has a much better chance to win the state if his supporters work to bring in new voters and get out the vote than if we just roll over and concede the state to the Republicans.

We're not rolling over.

Last weekend our Mobile, Alabama group, AL Obamacan Change Agents, held the first in a series of voter registration events we'll be hosting over the 12 weeks remaining before registration closes in Alabama. For our first event, we set up a booth at the Mobile Flea Market because it brings in enormous foot traffic across a wide demographic.

Photos after the break.

On The Weird Twists Of History, Part One, Or, Why We Have A Fourth Amendment

by: fake consultant

Mon Jul 14, 2008 at 15:59:30 PM CDT

( - promoted by mooncat)

This may be one of the strangest tales I have ever brought to the table, Gentle Reader, and yet one of the most fundamental in describing the birth of our Bill of Rights...and most especially the Fourth Amendment.

As many of you know, the new FISA compromise may or may not allow warrantless wiretapping of American citizens on a wholesale scale.

Something you may not know is that a similar debate raged in England (centered around the right of Government to seize the papers of whomever they chose, and use the papers as evidence against those persons) during the reign of King George III—or that it involved scandalous sexual behavior, Benjamin Franklin, the 18th Century version of blogging, and two men who decided to take on the corruption of the Crown...and won.

And because of all that, we have a Fourth Amendment today.

Ready for a tale of liberty and ribaldry?
Then let’s plunge right in, shall we?

Who Wants to Attend the Democratic National Convention? HURRY!

by: countrycat

Tue Apr 29, 2008 at 11:08:41 AM CDT

It's a political junkie's dream junket - a seat at the Democratic National Convention in August.

Not all of us had the good fortune to be selected as delegates or super delegates, but the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is offering Democratic contributors a chance to win a trip to Denver (airfare included!) to have a ringside seat to history.

You could win tickets to the convention, airfare, and hotel by making a donation.  But TOMORROW is the deadline!

Romney missed the Republican Memo

by: jonwil

Sun Jan 06, 2008 at 21:06:05 PM CST

I admit it, I watched the Fox Republican Debate.

Matthews was questioning the candidates, minus Ron Paul, about immigration.  Every one of the candidates responded with the word or gist of compassion.  Didn't they all start out as tough on immigration and the scary brown people?  Did someone finally get the message that the Latino vote might be important?

Apparently, Mitt Romney didn't get the memo because he kept with the no amnesty message and on the offensive against both Huckabee and McCain.  All the other candidates seemed more friendly with each other than any of them were with Romney (Looks like another great uniter).

It looks like Mitt has made enemies all around the Republican Candidate table.  But in the after debate review by viewers, Romney was the big winner.  Go figure.  Most of the people cited that Romney was the most persistent about legislating the wombs and possible other internal organs of women and he sufficiently hates the scary browns. And Republicans in NH apparently think the most important thing in the next president is that he should legislate women's rights, destroy the age old tradition of immigration and  "look presidential."  To hell with that hippie compassion for people.

The after debate focus group of Republicans overwhelming thought Barack Obama will be the Democratic Candidate. The NH Republicans also overwhelmingly believe that Romney can beat Obama.  Is marijuana legal in New Hampshire?

Have You Read the Headlines?

by: maytak

Tue Dec 04, 2007 at 08:39:32 AM CST

Have you seen the headlines?

The squabble to be first in deciding the nation's fate is intensifying. Early states are cleverly inching their primaries in a race to secure voting influence for their citizens. By the end of February, we'll know who the presidential finalists are before more than half the nation gets a chance to vote, let alone meet the candidates. Sound Fair?

Check out the primary schedule.

The heavily frontloaded primary schedule does all of America a disservice. Leaving the power to decide who the next president of the America can be to a handful of people is just not right. The demographic make up of all the early primary state, even combined, does not accurately represent the American population. For instance, isn't New Hampshire the third wealthiest state in the nation?

With less than a month left, there seems like there's no hope. The Washington Post reports that the American people are being tempted by pessimism, and are losing faith in our political system. But, not to fear. Register to host a caucus at www.nationalcaucus.com and get involved.

It seems like there's no hope but to accept the circumstances. However, I came across this website, the National Presidential Caucus, that looks to give voters a fair chance to voice their opinions before the primaries kick off. It's not a national primary or anything like that, don't let the name mislead you.

Here's how it works:
1) Post your caucus online
2) Meet offline with some friends, neighbors, whomever to discuss candidates and issues
3) Post your results from your discussions online

It's as simple as that. It's really just an effort to encourage and empower civic engagement and voter opinions. So why not...

How can we claim to go across seas to build a democracy, when our own political system at home is suffering? Get involved. sign up to host a caucus in your neighborhood today.

It's Time to Make a Choice in Iraq

by: Bill Richardson for President

Thu Oct 18, 2007 at 14:52:00 PM CDT

This is cross
posted
at The Huffington Post and posted here for your convenience in case
you missed it yesterday.

Truly ending the war in Iraq will only come about when our troops are no longer
targets. That is why Governor Bill Richardson believes that we should not leave
behind any of our troops. --Joaquin H. Guerra, Bill Richardson for President.

It's Time to Make a Choice in Iraq

By Governor Bill Richardson

Yesterday, twelve former Army captains wrote that short of reinstating the
draft, "our best option is to leave Iraq immediately." In an extraordinary
editorial in the Washington Post, these captains--all of whom served in Iraq--made
it clear that we need to end this war and we need to end it now. They wrote
that a " scaled withdrawal will not prevent a civil war and it will spend
more blood and treasure on a losing proposition."

I strongly urge every American to read this important report
from those who served in the failed conflict in Iraq. Army captains are the
staff officers who plan operations against insurgent strongholds. They are
the company commanders who lead our soldiers through the streets of Baghdad.
And they are the soldiers who will direct our withdrawal from Iraq.

These men and women know the score. They know that we must leave Iraq. As
they put it, "It's time to make a choice." Americans are fed up with the President's
stalling and Congressional failure to act. Frankly, it is well past time we
make a choice. And the only responsible choice left to us is to get all
of our troops out of Iraq, with no residual forces left behind--no combat
forces, no non-combat forces. As President, I will do it. I will get all of
our troops out within a year after I take office - sooner if we can get it
  done safely.

The other major candidates in this race have said--again and again--that
they will not. Senators Edwards, Obama, and Clinton have all refused to commit
to getting all of our troops out of Iraq by 2013. None of
them are willing to be clear about removing all troops - combat and non-combat.
It's unbelievable. Are they looking at the same war the rest of us are? Furthermore,
they are all advocating precisely the sort of scaled withdrawal that these
twelve captains are warning against. It doesn't make any sense. Real leadership
is about making the tough choices, and knowing when it is time to make bold
moves. Now is the time for action, not hesitation. Ending this war requires
  real change, not more incrementalism.

Ending this war is the most important issue of our time. And it is the fundamental
difference between me and Senators Edwards, Obama, and Clinton. I will end
the war; they will not. I will get all of our troops out; they will leave
troops behind indefinitely. I will order a safe and rapid withdrawal and have
our troops out within a year. They have proposed a long, protracted withdrawal
that will only increase the danger to our fighting men and women and drag
  out the war.

2013 is six years from now - six years. In six years, will
we have lost 6,000 men and women in Iraq? 10,000? More? In six years will
this be a $2 trillion mistake? Or $3 trillion? The war has been going on for
four and half years already. Six years from now, we will have been there for
more than a decade. Are you okay with that? I'm not.

The choice in Iraq is clear. We need to get all our troops out quickly. We
need to end this war for real. Go to getourtroopsout.com
to join Americans across the country in calling for a quick, clear, responsible
end to the war in Iraq.

Michelle Obama and WAL-MART

by: truthteller2007

Thu Jul 05, 2007 at 00:59:58 AM CDT

There are many reasons to oppose Obama, whose paltry legislative record disqualifies him for the Presidency.  That he would cite state legislative experience during a Presidential campaign as a qualification already reveals to this voter how underprepared he is for the Presidency.

We're Looking for the Next Great Alabama Democrat

by: Mark Lotwis

Thu May 24, 2007 at 10:36:01 AM CDT

(Y'all need to forward this to any progressive Alabamians who are running or thinking of running next year. Last cycle 21st Century Democrats endorsed candidates like Sherrod Brown, Darcy Burner, Keith Ellison and John Tester. Let's get one or two Alabamians on the list this time. - promoted by mooncat)

21st Century Democrats released our new 2007-2008 candidate questionnaire today.

Here at 21st Century Democrats, we think too many organizations endorse candidates based on a checklist of surveys of incremental policies that won't do much to fix what is wrong in this country. Checklist questionnaires tell you if a candidate supports your issue, but they don't tell you whether a candidate is actually going to do something about it if they get elected.

Mike Gravel is a walking time capsule

by: herding old cats

Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 23:24:23 PM CDT

( - promoted by mooncat)

As I watched former Senator Mike Gravel in the debate this evening, it struck me that he may be a walking time capsule.
I know he may have looked a little over the top to many viewers, but could that be because the "top" has been redefined? He confronted Chris Mathews very thoroughly on legislative tactics to end the Iraq Occupation - particularly: just because you don't have the votes now to overide a veto DOES NOT mean you will never have them!
His plan was very simple - keep introducing the same bill over and over and highlight Repuke efforts to filibuster it each and every day. This ties the war around thier necks most thoroughly, and when they finally realize that Bush will be gone after 2008, it will be a boat anchor.
