"There is a great need for legal aid in Alabama. According to recent statistics, Alabama ranks 51st -- below even Puerto Rico -- in spending for legal aid (from ALL SOURCES) to the poor. In fact, last year only 16% of the people who needed help were able to receive it because the legal aid system is so under-funded."
Below even Puerto Rico?
As I understand it, most state legislatures appropriate funds sufficient to provide legal aid -- except Alabama's.
Our legislature's failure to do anything meaningful to help poor folks comes as no surprise.
But below PUERTO RICO?
Has anyone done the research to find out whether any Alabama state legislator routinely proposes legislation to fund legal aid? Or does anyone know a legislator who might be willing to run with this issue?
