Bobby Bright Pledged Support of SCHIP During Campaign

Here is what Bobby Bright had on his website about SCHIP .
I support the continuation of the State Children's Health Insurance Program(S-CHIP) to the extent that it is available to the children of families who cannot afford health insurance.
I don't see how he can possibly justify or his vote based on this position. Or how could he reconcile that statement with this vote? Bright needs some help awfully quick. He's not winning any friends with too many Democrats. A good point is that Idaho Congressman Walt Minnick voted for SCHIP and he's in an even redder district than Bright. Jim Marshall was the only other Dem that voted against SCHIP and I cannot find any references to issues on his campaign re-election website. Unfortunately I think Bright's voting record is going to resemble Marshall quite often. Marshall was the mayor of Macon, Georgia before Congress. So like Bright, I think he is a lot better city executive than a Congressman.

How quickly he forgets who put him in office. (4.00 / 3)

Remember Bill Cosby's routine about his mom and discipline?

"I brought you into this world, and I can take you out!"

Perhaps someone should remind Congressman Bright that the same is true of political offices too.

"The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness."  - John Kenneth Galbraith

Is this then another case where you have a politician all ready to. . . (4.00 / 3)
.
. . . raise vociferous, stentorian, hues and cries over the horrors and injustices being perpetrated against the "unborn", but turn a blind and cynical eye towards the born?

That's a rhetorical question, I suppose:  the answer seems self-evident.

"Well, kid, your 8 months old now, time we strapped this wee little harness to you so that you can start pullin' your own weight!  And stop your belly-achin'!  Ain't you never heard of Horatio Alger?!  Who do you think you are, anyway, a Wall Street Investment Banker?!  Now get a move on!  And eat another cough drop, that hacking sound's driving me up the wall!"

Abortion (4.00 / 2)

I always thought it would be a neat idea for the Democrats to turn the tables on the "prolife" republicans. Introduce legislation that would basically create a government contract with women seeking abortions.

legislation: If a pregnant woman can provide proof that having her child would be a financial hardship, and that is her only reason for seeking an abortion, the government will provide x-amount of dollars monthly to help support that child until such time as the Mother can financially support it herself, if she will sign a contract and agree to have the child instead of aborting it.

Can you imagine the confusion and chaos this would cause republicans? They want to spew their antichoice rhetoric for the far right but ideologically they don't want poor people getting any government assistance. If they vote against this bill, they can't claim to be prolife. If they vote for it, Big money will see them as weak on economic issues. It also makes the Democrats seem to be the ones seeking a problem to the high number of abortions!!

Pro Life as Long as it's in the Womb (4.00 / 1)

I really can't feel to sorry for the people in Brights' district.  They had a choice between him and Cheryl Sabel in the democratic primary and they chose him.  Then came the race and they had a choice between anti choice Bright and anti choice Love. And they chose Bright.  What's that saying....The lessor of two evils is still evil.

You get what you vote for.

You should feel sorry for us. (4.00 / 1)

Cheryl Sabel never was a viable candidate. She knew it and we knew it as well. She is a wonderful person who is a real political activist, marching against the war in Iraq. She never really got organized in her campaign. She was never taken seriously. She also was not an effective fundraiser. She doesn't have the killer instinct. She is too nice.

So, we never had a good choice. Bobby Bright was recruited by both parties, and chose the democrats for their offers of money. He was a better leader as mayor than in Congress.

That's the political reality (0.00 / 0)
Being a nice person, a smart person or just generally a great human being -- and Cheryl Sabel was all of the above -- does not make you a great political candidate.  There's a particular set of skills and attributes involved and progressives need to recognize that fact and work to recruit progressive candidates who will be great candidates as well as great progressives.

Work harder and work smarter!

Your post is great. (4.00 / 1)
Simply put, if you are prolife, you should support the child. You should sent parts of this to Bobby Bright for us.

My post is below in the wrong place.

Bobby Bright, et al (4.00 / 1)
I honestly can't see anyone in the Alabama delegation bringing this up, as they're more colsely attuned to the gop than the Democratic party. I had thought of sending it to Dennis Kucinich.

Kucinich already gets it (0.00 / 0)
Send it to the Alabama delegation -- they're the ones who need their heads shaped!

Work harder and work smarter!

Kucinich has always gotten it (0.00 / 0)

Cheryl Sabel got it.

Which is why the media declared them non-viable candidates who didn't stand a chance of being elected, remember?

Kucinich (0.00 / 0)
I'm a huge fan of Dennis Kucinich. As you said, he gets it. That's why I E-Mailed my idea to him. I don't trust anyone in the Alabama delegation with progressive legislation. I believe that Dennis Kucinich is more likely to push for something along that line than anyone representing Alabama.

Kucinich Fan Here Too (0.00 / 0)
Kucinich was my first choice for POTUS. He opposed the Iraq Invasion from the begining and he has the courage to speak out. He doesn't worry about "expending political capital" and "pandering to the bigot" who aren't going to vote for him anyway.  Which is why the MSM despises him.

Latest Dim Blub (4.00 / 2)

Found this comment at Down with Tyranny regarding Bright.

Bobby "Bright" already seems to be the biggest dim bulb reactionary Dem in congress...giving xenophobe racists Heath Shuler and Gene Taylor runs for their money.

to post the wonderful photo I took of Bengoshi palling around with Heath Shuler?

Pretty please?  ;-)

I am so furious with Bobby Bright that I can't see straight.... (4.00 / 1)
And to think that I had his campaign sign in my yard!  I told him in my last email to him that I believe he should have run as a Republican based on this vote and his vote against the Lilly Ledbetter  Fair Pay Act.

Bright is a sympton of a deeper problem (0.00 / 0)

Sorry to comment on this so long after it was originally posted, but I must say that the comments about the need for progressive candidates to raise money are correct.

However, this is the problem that has created the mess we have today and gives up politicians like Bright. Candidates become slaves to raising money and the interests giving them the money, that even the most progressive members are going to disappoint on a number of votes, because they feel obliged to vote in the interest of the lobbies that funded their campaign.

The bankruptcy bill of a few years ago was a perfect example. You had some of the most progressive members of Congress voting for that bill. When you looked at the list of aformentioned representatives and what the donations they received from banking and credit card interests, EVERY one of them had received substantial campaign donations from the industry.

Progressives now have a prime opportunity to take on this system which most us know is corrupt and we're seeing the results right now. Using the fundraising and organizing mechanism discovered in the Dean campaign, progressive can raise money for progressive candidates across the country, to help them get the training and develop the message they need to run successful campaigns. I'm not talking about 5 grand from ActBlue. Five grand is a pittance in Congressional race. Working together we can raise significant amounts for a few dozen candidates each two years.

If the system is allowed to continue as it is, get ready for more bailouts, business failures, and Bobby Brights.
