Maher Challenges Tuscaloosa

by: BenGoshi

Sat Oct 25, 2008 at 09:17:14 AM CDT

Having lived and having been quite involved in some campaigning in Tuscaloosa during the '90s*, I know something of about the town, its people and the various political currents that run through it.

I haven't lived there for a few years, so I don't pretend to be an expert on conditions on the ground today, but I have some certainty that it'll be tough to call for either Obama or McCain; too many variables involved that I don't know about.

That said, I've just found out that last night Bill Maher more-or-less challenged Tuscaloosa to not go for McCain; that he called-out Tuscaloosa on his show, "Real Time".  He names -- of all places in the United States -- Tuscaloosa, Alabama, as the LEAST likely town in the nation to cast more votes for Obama than for McCain, owing to race.

Here's the vid, pay attention from 6:00-30:

I hope that the Tuscaloosa County Democratic Party will, in 1 and 1/2 weeks, be able and inclined to touch base with Mr. Maher, show him the voting totals and note that, indeed, it's not the racist place Maher implies it is.

The challenge has been made. It's not the time to tell Maher what an uninformed putz he is, it's time to work to make sure he's proved wrong on November 4.

Why'd he pick on Tuscaloosa? (4.00 / 2)

Do you think he even knows where Tuscaloosa is?

I am looking forward to seeing how things turn out county by county.  I think anyone that posts here could make regional predictions based on the past or on our presumed knowledge of the people living there.  But past performance is not so reliable anymore - as the election of James Field from Cullman shows.

It could be something much simpler than that. (4.00 / 4)
It looks like he was thinking about saying Alabama and then just spat out the first non-Birmingham city he could think of.

... and welcome. I think in reality, it could have been anytown, Alabama. Tuscaloosa was just the first name that popped in his name outside of predominantly black Birmingham. With the national coverage that the University of Alabama has been getting because of the Tide this year, Tuscaloosa could understandably be the first city that someone outside of Alabama would think of. I think it was more of a slam against Alabama as a whole, moreso than just one individual city.

You guys are probably right. (4.00 / 2)

He might have also thought Mobile was predominately black, and I'm sure he's never heard of Huntsville.

And Arab is right out.

It would be sweet to have Tuscaloosa and a lot of other places Bill Maher's never heard of surprise him on November 5th.  Surprise me, too.  I like surprises.

I'm howling here, "Herding!"  Lordy me, I can't wait for "Joe the Brother" McCain or "Sarah the Attack Patriot" to talk about a "Muslim" named Alabama town!  Ooops, we probably won't hear from "Joe the Brother," come to think of it.  He got nailed by the Alexandria, VA 911 for complaining that his being stuck in traffic was an emergency, didn't he?  Ah, but there's still "Michelle the McCarthy" who is a real go-getter about those those in Congress who are not "Pro-American" isn't there!  ROFL!

Oh, I don't doubt that. But just that Tuscaloosa was the town he... (4.00 / 2)
.
. . . reflexively blurted out (not Topeka, Kansas, or Ellijay, Georgia, or Pensacola, Florida. . .) says that that's where his subconscious is telling him the real rubes/bigots reside these days, well, it says something about his image/impression of Alabama in general and Tuscaloosa in particular.

Alabama in general, at the very least (4.00 / 2)
But any county in Alabama with a large college age population ought to go for Obama this year.  If they don't, the local Democratic party needs to do some real soul searching along about the 2nd week of November.

Work harder and work smarter!
