I don't even have to post the name. We all know which state it is and who the governor is. Sarah Palin, governor of America's number one welfare state (Alaska), should be dubbed the "welfare queen". It's a phrase popular among Republicans who favor the term for poor women who seek government assistance. So why would the phrase not fit Palin?

Alaska takes in more money in earmarks from the federal government than any other state. The average state takes in $50 per capita in earmarks. Alaska takes in over ten times that much, $506 per capita. Alaska, 47th in population, received $379,669,715 in 2008, more than any other state! And the GOP wants us to believe Governor Palin's a reformer, who says "thanks but no thanks" to earmarks.

Alaska prides themselves on being independent from the lower 48 states and not dependent on the federal government for their existence. They're "pioneers", "outdoorsmen" and "self dependent". They don't need to take federal money... so they say. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth.

Republicans.

A sight to behold (much as one might behold, with loathing and while trying to keep-down one's lunch) the sight of freshly-made road kill, all dissected with the surgical precision that only several dozen hurtling tires can bring.

Must hand it to them: Republican Americans are not ones to hide their rank hypocrisy and rapacious proclivities. They do much of it all out in the open these days, just daring the public to stop 'em.

Earmarks (4.00 / 1)

First I am politically incorrect enough that it ain't "earmarks" it is just good old "pork" (or should I say a pig by any other name is still a pig?)

That said, as a longtime political observer I wonder if this issue really has any legs? I say that because:

1. Voters appear to heave a split personality when it comes to pork. We all hate ( a terrible waste of taxpayer money)it when it goes elsewhere but we sure love it when it funds our projects (a fine use of money to advance America). Keep it mind I would bet Alabama is a "taker state".

2. Suppose a candidate ran for Gov., US Representative or Senator on the following platform - " I will not only not solicit pork but I will block any attempt by anyone else to give pork to my district or state" - what do you suppose his/her chancs of being elected would be?

3. Palin has only been gov for 20 months. The Democrats have controlled Congress that entire time. I wonder how Obama/Biden/McCain voted on that pork?

but please, get real about "the Democrats have controlled Congress". You are astute enough to know that the GOP has made it clear they will filerbuster every bill they don't like and their president will veto the ones that get through. Dems do not have a veto-proof margin.

It is disingenuous to suggest that the past two years have been a reflection of Democratic Party leadership.
