Bhm's Pretend Obama Headquarters

by: BenGoshi

Sun Aug 10, 2008 at 16:54:08 PM CDT

A week or two ago, as I drove through downtown Birmingham, I spied a large Obama Headquarters sign on the side of a building on 4th Avenue North.  I made a mental note to drop by when I could, introduce myself to whatever staff may be in, write a little check, and pick up a bumper sticker or button or some such thing.  I really like those " A l O b a m a " stickers.   So, yesterday, Saturday the 9th, I blocked-out a few minutes to make a call on Obama HQ.

This is what I saw:
Birmingham Obama HQ

Here's the view from the front:

Birmingham Obama HQ  The other thing I saw was a whole lot of absolutely no other cars.  Something I felt was a locked door when I tried to open it.  Something I heard, when I dialed the number on the banners, was the sound of a pleasant young woman's voice telling me to leave a message, UNLESS it had anything to do with the Obama Campaign because the number on the banners was wrong and it was her number and that she was and is in no way affiliated with the Obama campaign.  Interesting, that.    I don't mean to complain, but I've actually got some experience in this.  In '92 and again in '96, I ran the County Headquarters (in a largish West Alabama County) for Bill Clinton (and all state and local "down-ticket" Democratic Candidates.  Did the same for Don (and local candidates) in '98.  And, thing is, we were always up-and-running by this time (staffed, etc.) -- by the end of the first week of August.  And, further thing is, Clinton did not have a "50 State Strategy"...    I would suggest that unless and until the Birmingham Headquarters actually opens, that sign needs to come down.  I'd also suggest that when the sign goes back up, it have the right phone number on it.  I'd finally suggest that the Headquarters open up asap.  When it does, I'll be by.

I'm sure this will all get sorted out within the next (4.00 / 1)
 7-10 days.

Certainly hope so.

7 - 10 days? (4.00 / 1)
I'm hoping to see it sorted out in maybe the next 24 - 48 hours -- at least the phone number part.

Work harder and work smarter!

Pretty neat way to do it! (4.00 / 1)
Does this mean that a decision is close at hand?

My Goodness! (4.00 / 1)

In 1990 - I think it was - anyway, it was the first time Siegelman ran for governor against Hubbert in the primary.

When we opened Siegelman HQ in Madison County, the phone company listed the HQ under residential numbers!  Which meant that when someone called directory assistance & asked for the Siegelman HQ, they were told there was "no listing."  The only way to get the number was to ask for the number for "Don Siegelman" like you're calling him directly.

We'd have never known if a friendly CWA volunteer hadn't also worked for the phone company.  She told us that she had gotten "numerous" calls and she always gave them the HQ number, but the other operators may not be doing the same thing, becuase, technically, they weren't supposed to.

That was a big phone number screwup, but nothing like this one.  At least WE knew what our phone number was!

No Party HQ in B'ham (4.00 / 2)

To my understanding there is no Party Headquarters in Jeff Co right now. In 2006 the party was using the old Fish Market for the Party Headquarters.

The Obama Headquarters is in a building owned by Gaynelle and Elias Hendricks. Gaynelle is the Dem Nominee for Tax Assessor. They own Wee Care Academy which is housed in the building. They used this facility for the Obama HQ during the primary.

I am not sure what is going on with the Dem Party in Jefferson County. There seems to be a lot of enthusiasm as all the events have had good turnouts including an Over the Mountain Dems event at the Barons Game.

The State Party essentially leaves Jefferson County to themselves anyways. It's my personal opinion that we need a paid staffer in B'ham. But I don't think that we are really concerned with any statewide races besides Paseur.

well, uh, that's what I found out. (4.00 / 1)

I found out yesterday, when I went to a locked-up-tight building, that there was "no party HQ" here.

Of course, the sign says that it's Obama Headquarters.

And the phone number's not even correct.

Bad form, all the way around.

Paid staffer??? (4.00 / 1)
How come in Tuscaloosa County, which, last time I checked, had fewer people in it than JeffCo, there's never been (to the best of my knowledge, and to my certain knowledge during the '90s) a "paid staffer" -- that Tuscaloosa County's always been able to find plenty of people who Wanted to Get Democrats Elected to Office enough to be able to adequately staff a Campaign HQ?

How come JeffCo seems incapable of doing what other counties are capable of doing?

Baron's games and cookouts and cocktail parties are fun, certainly.  Where's the volunteer and work part come in?

Maybe we are the party of Will Rogers, after all. (0.00 / 0)

I can cut them some slack about being closed up on Saturday morning -- maybe everybody is out registering voters or knocking on doors -- but displaying an incorrect phone number is just plain wrong.

Maybe they're using a banner left over from the primary and it has the old phone number on it, but that's no excuse.  Someone needs to go get some white duct tape and tape over the incorrect phone number, right now.  A banner with no number is infinitely better than one with the wrong number.  I sure hope someone has called and apologised profusely to the current owner of that phone number.  We need every single vote in November.

Come on people, let's see some organization!

Not as bad, but similar (4.00 / 2)
I got all dressed up - clean underwear and everything - and went to a church in Flomaton, where they had stated online they were having an Obama-connected Voters Registration Drive after church.  I waited until church was over and approached everyone who seemed to be in some authority, and learned... they had no clue what I was talking about. Yes, I greatly feat that we continue to be "not an organized political party".

Who is "they" and where online did you read it? (4.00 / 1)

In re: Waiting at the Church (4.00 / 2)
When I said "they" I referred to an unknown somebody who placed a notice on a statewide list of events.  As to where I found it, I believe it was a link in a Mooncat diary about an Obama event in her neck of the woods.  Could be wrong about that.  I called the number given and spoke to a pleasant lady who assured me that "they" (her word of course was "we") would be having this event at 12:00 noon yesterday. I did not write down her name, but trust me, no one at that church had a clue what I was talking about.

Call the pleasant lady back. (4.00 / 1)

and ask her why they didn't show up? I am not sure but it sounds like mooncat got the info off Barackobama.com .

Thanks, but I'll handle it another way. It'll be fine. (4.00 / 1)

That might have been on the Obamaroo post (0.00 / 0)
Because I did link to the Alabama events page at the Obama website.  Not cool.
