Update from the Segall Campaign

(Local races need as much exposure as possible.  Good conerage. - promoted by normboyd40)

Just got an email called The Inside Scoop  from the Josh Segall campaign. Some highlights and observations

1. They have opened an office in Anniston. - That is a great move. I'm not sure that 4 years ago Fuller even had an Anniston office. With an Anniston and Montgomery office he will be able to more effectively battle Rogers on his home turf. This election will be decided in large part by how much Segall can tap into the Anniston area.

2.. Segall is starting a series of Town Hall meetings in the district starting with a meeting in Phenix City tomorrow night. - This is another area where Josh can make up some votes. I like this idea although it is pretty standard in a well-run campaign.

3. Josh was fundraising in D.C with Steny Hoyer, Bud Cramer and Artur Davis - This shows that he has gotten some attention in DC as well as interest of leading party moderates like Hoyer and Davis.

4. Josh supports offshore drilling - May upset a few folks, but I think that Rogers would have had a field day if he just said he want to focus on alternative and renewable energy sources. He does emphasize that he wants to focus on renewable energy sources that can be produced in Alabama.

5. Josh got a lot of good press last week. I think that he will need several weeks like that, but this race is certainly heating up.

It’s hard to fault Segall on the drilling issue.  As righteous as Joe Turnham was on environmental issues, Rogers used that to paint a caricature of Turnham as a tree hugging, San Francisco style idealist.  And we have to admit, except for the Seventh, there’s not a district in Alabama that would elect a Charlie Rangel or a Henry Waxman, so we have to give all our candidates a little room to maneuver.

He needs an office in Lee County, too.

And attention from Steny Hoyer is a very good sign.

That was why Turnham lost (4.00 / 1)

really. people seem to just want to remember it now as the dccc pulling out their financial committment. but rogers turned this into an attack on Turnham and his strength on environmental issues.

Segall has the change motif going for him as well as not having any "crazy liberal" democratic ideas.

I want to know (4.00 / 1)
What is wrong with being a "tree hugging, San Franciso style idealist"?  It's certainly better than the alternative.

The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die.~Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D. MA)

Looks like Segall has decided he can't run as a Democrat. (4.00 / 1)
I'll bet there will be more than a 10% dropoff from Obama to Segall in the predominately black voting precincts.  That, and distancing himself from Siegelman, who actually carried the district, is what killed Turnham.  I'm now anti-Rogers, but no longer pro-Segall.

10%? (4.00 / 1)

because he supports offshore drilling? A lot of Dems support Offshore drilling.

 Dick Durbin supports offshore drilling.

I'm not a big fan of Dick Durbin either (0.00 / 0)
And I'm sorry to see Segall doing what I feel is the wrong thing on offshore drilling.  It's a land grab for oil companies who are already sitting (and not drilling) on millions of acres of leases.  They see high prices now as an opportunity to lock in the rest of the land they want so they can sit on that until oil is $250 a barrel.

Work harder and work smarter!

but to exclude Josh for that alone (4.00 / 1)
is rather near-sighted.

[ Parent ]
Why near-sighted? (4.00 / 1)
I think it provides insight into what to expect when he goes to DC, an oil company tool!

[ Parent ]
Oh, he's miles better than the alternative (0.00 / 0)

Do-nothing Mike Rogers.  But I had still hoped he would see throught the oil industry opportunism that is pushing offshore leases right now.

No worries, I'm used to supporting Democrats who are well to the right of me -- that whole terminology is frustrating because they usually wind up being well to the wrong of me!

Work harder and work smarter!

People, focus. (4.00 / 2)

I know it's tempting to look for that perfect candidate, the one who is with us on every issue, but I have two pieces of information for you.  1.  Jesus, Albert Schweitzer, Ghandi, Desmond Tutu...none of these is on a ballot anywhere this year, so we might have to settle for "good enough". and

2. Politicians have been known to lie to get elected.  Sometimes even lie about their good qualities because there are a lot more "average" than "above average" voters, (except, one supposes, in Lake Wobegon).  So, if a candidate is good on most issues, let's assume he isn't gonna completely sell us out on others. I am thinking especially of the death penalty.  There is no more important issue in my opinion.  It is simply the most basic.  But if I wait for candidates who oppose the death penaly all the time and every time, I would never get to vote. Off-shore drilling?  Important, but, for me, not a sine qua non. I will just vote for the Progressive and hope he comes around on the specific issues where I disagree with him/her.

A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

Our elections are almost always a binary choice.  Choose the One or the Zero -- and we know which is which in AL-03, don't we?

Work harder and work smarter!
