| I've heard Republicans complain that the Decatur Daily was a "liberal rag," because it endorsed John Kerry in 2004. It endorsed Bush in 2000 though, so at least the editors showed they could learn from past mistakes. But today's endorsement does give one pause - and a couple of chuckles: Wayne Parker doesn’t have any business being in Congress. Our interviews with Mr. Parker indicated a lack of substance. He went out of his way to avoid taking a position on any issue. He struggled to articulate his thoughts and was poorly prepared on issues facing the Tennessee Valley. His opponent, Cheryl Baswell Guthrie, is conservative and adheres to many views that we question. She is, however, intelligent and articulate. In contrast to her opponent, she has researched the issues affecting the Tennessee Valley thoroughly.
Having been party to one of CBG's conference calls, I'd have to take issue with the intelligent and articulate part. I found her a one-issue candidate obsessed with immigration and given to entertaining malaprops. Could the suspicious Republicans actually be right? Is that liberal rag, the Decatur Daily, trying to pump up Griffith's chances by encouraging voters to back the weakest Republican? Could be. It could also be that the editors, like so many people see Peanut for what he is: an dim-bulb opportunist outsider who reappears in the Valley every couple of years, hoping to ride his family connections to a Congressional seat. |
