Decatur Daily Endorses Cheryl Baswell Guthrie?

by: countrycat

Sun Jul 13, 2008 at 08:13:54 AM CDT

I've heard Republicans complain that the Decatur Daily was a "liberal rag," because it endorsed John Kerry in 2004.  It endorsed Bush in 2000 though, so at least the editors showed they could learn from past mistakes.

But today's endorsement does give one pause - and a couple of chuckles:

Wayne Parker doesn’t have any business being in Congress. Our interviews with Mr. Parker indicated a lack of substance.

He went out of his way to avoid taking a position on any issue. He struggled to articulate his thoughts and was poorly prepared on issues facing the Tennessee Valley.

His opponent, Cheryl Baswell Guthrie, is conservative and adheres to many views that we question. She is, however, intelligent and articulate. In contrast to her opponent, she has researched the issues affecting the Tennessee Valley thoroughly.

Having been party to one of CBG's conference calls, I'd have to take issue with the intelligent and articulate part.  I found her a one-issue candidate obsessed with immigration and given to entertaining malaprops.

Could the suspicious Republicans actually be right?  Is that liberal rag, the Decatur Daily, trying to pump up Griffith's chances by encouraging voters to back the weakest Republican?

Could be.  It could also be that the editors, like so many people see Peanut for what he is: an dim-bulb opportunist outsider who reappears in the Valley every couple of years, hoping to ride his family connections to a Congressional seat.

See, here's the thing about Parker. (4.00 / 2)

I think that the insurance industry, which made a $44.8 billion profit in 2005(1) (or, $48.8 billion, depending on the source(2)), $61.9 billion in 2006 (3) (or $68 billion (4)), and, according to most sources, slipped a bit from those Record Profit Years, with, say, Allstate netting only $4.6 billion (5) and Liberty Mutual netting a pittance of $1.52 billion in 2007 (6), already has plenty of power and representation in Washington, DC.  I simply don't think it needs MORE shills and lackies and water-carriers on Capitol Hill.

Of course, Mr. Parker would disagree with me and, I'm quite sure, contend that the Insurance Industry is too poor and underrepresented in Congress and that the working- and middle-class in this country are too rich and overrepresented in Congress and that, if elected, he can and will work to set things right.

CBG's BIG Ideas (4.00 / 2)

CBG Does have enough Karl Rove in her to try and make a silk purse out of a pig's ear. In her latest ad, she shows three do-nothing Congress members arguing and bickering over oil prices. She mentions the same tired GOP ideas about drilling in ANWR and off-shore, suggesting how Congress could somehow solve the oil/gas crisis by opening these areas up to exploration. She then suggests subliminally that the "change in Washington" is in congressional leadership instead of presidential.

I remember a previous ad of hers where she actually managed to attack Democrats in Congress for the failings of the Republican presidency/Congress by using the line ...when Republicans in Congress start voting like Democrats... She IS a lot more imaginative than Wayne Parker but she's one of those people who grate on your nerves when you watch her on the air.

BTW, I had a "moment" with one of her supporters during the primary. As I was leaving the polls, I noticed a couple of young girls by my car with CBG signs. There was a 40ish year old gentleman helping them get set up. It was early and I was parked in the closest space to the polls. There was another closer but it was marked "no parking", so I didn't park there. Well, it seems that the 40ish year old gentleman HAD parked there and was getting signs out of his car. Well, I just HAD to point out to him that he was parked in a "no parking" space. He just looked at me dumbfounded and said, "I know. I'm fixing to move."

~I'm outta here!!!

The State of Alabama doesn't need either one of them in Congress (4.00 / 1)
The job of any Republican in Congress will be to obstruct, obstruct, obstruct.  The American people have had enough.  It's time for them (Republicans) to go.

The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die.~Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D. MA)

I can't even decide (4.00 / 1)

which would be worse.

They're both horrible in different ways.....

Parker: shill for the already-powerful. (4.00 / 1)

 Baswell-Guthrie:  looney potatoes.

Put the two of them together and you have the consumate, proto-Republican.

It is a rejection of Peanut (4.00 / 2)

Whether you agree with CBG or not, you have to admit she has made herself available to voters. She has the above mentioned conference calls, held townhall meetings open to the public, and challenged Peanut to debate her.

That being said I expect Peanut to win big in the run-off.

Can we vote in their primary? (4.00 / 1)

If we could vote this Tuesday, why bother?  Well, I do not like Wayne Parker at all.  His signs are in Blue.  For some reason that bothers me to no end.  I do not want him to be that candidate for the Republican party.  Just look at his name on those blue signs, Parker.   Is he trying to confuse  people  especially  for the November  elections?  His antics with the local Republican party show me his is more for Wayne Parker than anything else.  Yes I am petty.

I would prefer to have CBG be the Republican candidate. If a Republican won in November I would prefer CBG only because (and I mean it ) she is a woman and she is not Wayne Parker.

So I have managed to convince myself I have a right to vote in this election this Tuesday.  Well,  She will be easier to beat in November and will elimate any Parker name confusion.

Can I vote this Tuesday.?

Historically, the AL GOP has welcomed crossovers (0.00 / 0)

believing that those people acually vote Republican in November.

They don't have any party rules against crossover voting (meaning you vote Democratic in the primary and Republican in the runoff), but there have been rumblings and grumblings about "Democrats messing with the election."

Well, after 1986, welcome to our world guys!  Quit whining and do something about it if you don't like it.
