Glory, Glory, Troy May Stick It Out!

Sat Jul 12, 2008 at 00:39:41 AM CDT

Danny is reporting that his sources (the impeccable #1-in-a-jug Steve Windom and King consultant Chris Brown) say Troy King will hang in there as Alabama's Attorney General.  And get this denial from Alabama GOP Communications Director Philip Bryan -- “I haven’t heard any plans that he is going to resign.”  Strong stuff.  Did you even bother to inquire, Mr. Bryan?

We can only hope that Troy Boy sticks it out in his current office, that he goes to the Republican convention to endorse John McCain and even that he becomes the Republican nominee for governor in 2010.  I can't imagine anything more perfect.

But here's some unsolicited advice for Troy from this DFH blogger:  You can't stonewall your way through this thing.  Your office is telling people who call that they won't confirm or deny any rumors.  If it's a false, scurrilous rumor, why not just say "There are false, scurrilous rumors circulating and we will not dignify them with further response?"  A flat denial would at least convince a few people and provide a fig leaf so others could credibly drop the story.

Instead of dying down, the talk is still picking up steam -- I know that from the Sitemeter at this blog which is in uncharted territory right now on a Friday night, of all things.  Journalists around the country are interested in our Attorney General.  I'm getting calls from media folks as far away as Washington, DC, for heaven's sake, and that isn't an everyday thing for this peaceful Alabama blogger.

While we're waiting on a denial or confirmation, I'll sort of channel Lucianne Goldberg and Linda Tripp here, with some advice to friends of Troy.  If you have the equivalent of a blue Gap dress in your closet, don't send it to the dry cleaners, you know?  Like Linda said, "I would tell my own daughter," that she should save the dress "for your own ultimate protection" should she later be accused of lying about the affair.

You never know what the future will holdSave the evidence to protect yourself.

Update:  McCain has scrubbed his website, taking down the page that announced Troy King had been named as his Alabama campaign chairman.  Does this mean that King has resigned from that post?  Or that McCain has fired him?

Fishbowl America has a screenshot of the original press release, and I know the page was there this morning because I read it and linked to it.  More inept coverup from the McCain camp.  Here's the Google cached page which says:

Alabama Attorney General Troy King will serve as Chair of the McCain 2008 Alabama campaign. Representative Bachus and Attorney General King will continue to lead the growing grassroots organization on behalf of John McCain's candidacy in Alabama.

...

"John McCain is the best hope for conservatives to succeed in November," said Attorney General Troy King. "He is a principled conservative with a clear record of supporting a strong national defense, fighting for fiscal responsibility, and defending the sanctity of life. John McCain has served our country his entire life, and I am honored to lead his efforts here in Alabama."

omg, how funny... (4.00 / 2)

that was a really funny post, actually.

I'm not surprised that they're simply not commenting, I'm surprised at the wording of every non-denial denial. If the Advertiser and the Press Register are sitting on this until Monday, which I'm guessing they are, they're probably still hoping for either a smoking gun, or for a MSM outlet to blow them out of the water and report it. I know fishbowlamerica.com was getting hits from several national outlets, including CNN and ABC. And, ironically, the Alabama Republican Party.

I've put out more feelers with the Montgomery area press, so I'm waiting to hear more of the skivy.

I just saw this story at PR.  Here's the link to the Troy King page at JohnMcCain.com  Blank.

Man, King's just dragging this out.  A vivisection.

Congratulations (0.00 / 0)

You've successfully helped destroy a man's reputation - and future political career - on the thinnest of evidence.  Scratch that.  You actually have no evidence other than circumstance.  Good job.

I certainly do hope you enjoy the limelight.  I regret that it will only heighten your recklessness in the future.

Hey, some people contend that. . . (4.00 / 2)

. . . one should just report, and let the people decide.

I believe this blog reported the truth:  these ARE the stories that've been going 'round Montgomery the past week or three. His office WON'T deny that they're true (according to those who've been asking).  He IS a grandstanding egomaniac.

You're free to not like those rumors swirling around Montgomery or disagree with the opinion that this guy's a blowhard, of course.

Gosh, rumors of scandal about about a craven politician.  Who'd have thought THAT could ever happen!  By the way, I invite you to share your concern with Matt Drudge, too.

Oh, and why would McCain run like the wind... (4.00 / 2)

. . . from this guy, IF they (the McCain campaign) checked into things and found this all to be nothing but a "pack of lies"?  I mean, gosh, what would that say about McCain, if he's running from such a noble person, right?  What does it say about McCain for, ahem, "cutting and running" before sussing-out what's what?  All a sight to behold, ain't it!

Right, Brian.. (4.00 / 2)

.if this were a story about a liberal, or Democratic politician, you believe Faux News wouldn't have run it on much thinner evidence?  What are you smoking? This is a story that is all over the blogosphere, all over the streets, and in every newsroom in the Southeast.  This was not created on LIA, nor were we the first to talk about it.

Understand, it's not about the "behavior", it's about the hypocricy. He is toast and deserves to be.

Brain, Brain, Brian, (4.00 / 1)

Republicans impeached President Bill Clinton for trying to conceal a personal, consentual, sexual affair, remember?

All a misunderstanding. (4.00 / 2)

He was actually caught at home, in the t.v. room, watching ESPN 2 with a friend.  By the time the stories made the rounds between 5 or 6 people . . .  well, you know how these things can get blown out of proportion.

Of course, no one realized he was such a sports nut.

Calls from DC & others? (4.00 / 1)

Mooncat, you're running with the big dogs!

I've gotten emails from friends who live in Texas, Arizona, and Ohio who have somehow gotten wind of this.

So, I don't buy Brian's assertion that poor Troy is getting hammered for nothing.  If there's nothing to the story, then put out a denial and throw it back in the faces of those who started the rumour.

It's the dead silence and media blackout that's suspicious.

If it were just a rumour going around in a small town, then he's right to ignore it.  But this zapped through the state pretty quickly and kept going.

We hear ya mooncat (4.00 / 2)

We got a lot of traffic just for posting a small blurb about the rhetoric he spewed as a student.

We noticed that we got a lot of keyword searches on "Troy King resignation" and different variations of that search.

The reporting by LIA has been fair and accurate. Just putting out there what had already been going around for weeks does not seem like it should be criticized too much.

The Republican spinmeisters are probably all over our blogs right now.

It's the non denials and the media blackout that is suspecious. Can you say WHNT Channel 19 and 60 Minutes?

Soapblox is really strict about this. (4.00 / 1)

Soapblox's father, sister and one of its uncles, did pingbacks.  Well, we all know how those stories ended.  So Soapblox stays miles away from pingbacks these days.  Wouldn't do a pingbacks for love nor money.  Tonic water only.

Good post on Troy (4.00 / 1)

at Pam's House Blend.

Republican Sexual Hypocrisy looks to be another fruitful area for interesting reporting in 2008, so I guess McSame wants to take the proactive path and "convict" the highly anti-gay King, who is rumored to have been booted by his wife for engaging in homo-sex with a male staffer. There has been no confirmed admission by King; the Attorney General's office denied the rumors of the affair and said King had no plans to resign.

Work harder and work smarter!

Let this be a lesson for Democratic Candidates and Office Holders (4.00 / 1)
Just stick it out and ride the storm.  This too shall pass.  Ben Lodmell, I'm talking to you.
