Happy 231st Birthday to the Declaration of Independence

For the Fourth of July I had planned to do a little diary about the Declaration of Independence and the man who mostly wrote it, Thomas Jefferson, who happens to be my favorite Founding Father.  But blogs are creatures of the moment, and Keith Olbermann has boiled the Bush/Cheney regime down to its ugly bare skeleton and wired that to a board so we can all see just how twisted it is.  This is KO's moment; Jefferson will still be around next Independence Day.

We enveloped our President in 2001.And those who did not believe he should have been elected—indeed those who did not believe he had been elected—willingly lowered their voices and assented to the sacred oath of non-partisanship.

And George W. Bush took our assent, and re-configured it, and honed it, and shaped it to a razor-sharp point and stabbed this nation in the back with it.

Were there any remaining lingering doubt otherwise, or any remaining lingering hope, it ended yesterday when Mr. Bush commuted the prison sentence of one of his own staffers.

Did so even before the appeals process was complete; did so without as much as a courtesy consultation with the Department of Justice; did so despite what James Madison—at the Constitutional Convention—said about impeaching any president who pardoned or sheltered those who had committed crimes “advised by” that president; did so without the slightest concern that even the most detached of citizens must look at the chain of events and wonder: To what degree was Mr. Libby told: break the law however you wish—the President will keep you out of prison?

In that moment, Mr. Bush, you broke that fundamental com-pact between yourself and the majority of this nation’s citizens—the ones who did not cast votes for you. In that moment, Mr. Bush, you ceased to be the President of the United States. In that moment, Mr. Bush, you became merely the President of a rabid and irresponsible corner of the Republican Party. And this is too important a time, Sir, to have a commander-in-chief who puts party over nation.

 "... That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government ..."  What would Jefferson say about Bush and Cheney?  "Resign or be impeached" sounds about right.

The conservative gene pool is pretty small.  Someone with a stronger stomach than me could probably work out the combinations, but don't look at it without eye protection.

Totally unrelated - except to the mention of gene pool - I remember Phil Gramm in 1996 mentioning that there was "a recessive gene in the Republican Party" that explained support for Pat Buchanan and his criticism of globalization.  I thought at the time it was ironic, to a thrilling degree, to live in a time when Phil Gramm's face was on national TV saying the words "recessive gene".

Could that be considered performance art?

What would Jefferson say about Bush and Cheney? (4.00 / 1)

Well, google this:

The tree of Liberty needs to be watered from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

He did not mention traitors in this line.  I beleive Thomas Jefferson was inclined to suspicion of accusations of treason, but tyranny was and is provable.

Hey mooncat -

I've been following Left In Alabama for about a week since my wife found the site, and after this post, I figured I should chime in.  I've been in Mobile for 6 years now (not counting the 4 I spent in Tuscaloosa before graduating and moving out), and thought we were the only progressives around.  It's nice to be wrong sometimes.

On the post, I think Keith Olberman will eventually be viewed as an American hero, much like Edward R. Murrow before him (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0615386/bio).

Glad to meet you, internetically speaking.  We don't seem to have a lot of "Progressive Voices" from down Mobile way.  I hope you will hang around and chime in regularly.  I suspect most of us used to think we were the only progressives around.  That's why it's so important that we find each other and start organizing and pulling together.

Do you know anything about A. J. Cooper who is standing as a Democrat for the Senate D32 seat?  I'm sure he's not favored, but I hope he will at least run and talk about some issues.  If he had a website, we would gladly pimp it often between now and the election.
