Alabama Blogger Going to the Democratic Convention

by: mooncat

Wed May 14, 2008 at 13:45:15 PM CDT

Doc's Political Parlor will represent Alabama as a member of the Democratic Convention's "State Blogger Corps."  Although Democrats included bloggers in the press pool for the 2004 Convention, I don't think any Alabama blogs were included.  Republicans haven't decided how many independent bloggers they will credential for their convention, but there is no chance they will include one from every state and territory as the DNCC did.  This credentialing is a real victory for independent and citizen driven media.  State bloggers will have floor and hall credentials and will be seated with their state delegations -- no wifi connection though.

The DNCC previously announced an expansion of the credentialed blogger pool from past Conventions and the addition of a state blogger credentialing program.  As part of the new DemConvention State Blogger Corps, designed for bloggers covering state and local politics, bloggers will receive unparalleled access to state delegations and the floor of the Convention hall.  In a truly unprecedented move, the DNCC will seat these bloggers with their respective delegations during the historic four-day event, providing even greater access for local coverage and perspective.  Highlights from these blogs will also be featured on www.DemConvention.com in the lead up to and during the Convention.

Appropriately, DNC Chairman Howard Dean, architect of the 50 State Strategy, notified the blogs selected this morning by online video message.

Congratulations to Danny and his team at the Political Parlor -- they will undoubtedly provide great, insightful convention blogging for Alabama.  As for those of us who didn't make the State Blogger Corps, we're still hoping for credential love from the DNCC as part of the general blogger pool.

Oh No! Not Docs! (4.00 / 1)
They tend to lean right wing.

We wuz robbed (4.00 / 1)
What the hell? we need to take this to the credentials committee on May 31. Is that even a Democratic Blog? Do you think our association with DJack hurt us with the superdelegates?

It is definately NOT a Democratic Blog! (0.00 / 0)
Someone needs to alert Howard Dean.  I agree, we wuz robbed!

I thought we were doing well with the superdelegates -- surely one right wing radio host wouldn't blacken our reputation that much?

Check out his announcement!

The Democratic National Convention in Denver will have a “State Blogger Corps,” one per state, that will be credentialed and seated alongside the state delegations at the Convention in Denver. When I applied for the Political Parlor to represent Alabama there, I thought the Clinton-Obama drama might create a convention even more exciting than most, but that part of the story now looks to be finished by convention time. Regardless, I am glad to learn that the Parlor has been accepted as Alabama’s credentialed blog at the Democratic National Convention.

Interview with Howard Dean (0.00 / 0)

Aaron Silverstein of Squarestate had the opportunity to interview Chairman Dean on the subject of blogger access at the Democratic Convention.  Here's a little piece of what Dean said

The conventions in the past were staged events where we go to make grand speeches beamed out over mostly cable and some prime time. This time we are going to go get bloggers who represent the online community, one from each state, on the floor sitting with their delegation, so you will actually have more access than the average main stream media person because they don't get to stay on the floor the entire time; they can rotate through. Secondly, we want to tear down the walls between the Democratic National Convention and the online community and the people in general in the country. The way to do that is to seat people on the floor who are members of the online blogging community, and you'll get to give whatever reflections that you have about what your experience is, and people will presumably get in touch with you and post their own thoughts about what you are saying, so this is a terrific way for us to talk to the American people, and listen to them as well.

He's serious about changing the relationship between the party and the people and I think it's great.  Go read the whole post at SquareState

And, Mooncat, I hope you're picked in general round, at least.

That would be Dale Jackson, a North Alabama radio personality on WVNN -- who had no influence on the DNCC State Blogger Corps decision, LOL!

Doc is not an actual blogger.  He either quotes selected headlines from the various newspapers or talks about some GOP candidate.  His commentors are the worst example of citizens of the state of Alabama.   He blog reminds me of WVNN AM 770.   This is terrible.

The Arise Citizen's Policy Project.  If you click through to their website and click the Sign Up for ACPP News Updates button at the upper left you can get on the list, too.  They come out early every morning, 7 days a week, holidays and everything and are a great roundup of what is in the (mostly Alabama) newspapers.

Redeye, I know Danny personally, and I can say... (4.00 / 1)
...you have no need to worry.  He is not a right-winger by any stretch of the imagination.  He does strive to be non-partisan on his blog, and he has some wacko commenters, but his heart is definitely in the right place.

[ Parent ]
And mooncat, best of luck with the general credentialing (4.00 / 1)
I'd love to read your reports from the convention!

[ Parent ]
Kathy, I respectfully disagree with you about the non partisan nature of Doc's (4.00 / 2)

The content and the commentators on Docs have a definate GOP spin.  Look at the reason Doc himself said he even applied to be the Alabama Blogger at the DNC which I posted previously.  He wanted a ring side seat for the Obama/Hillary show and to provide ammo  for  the righty's that hang out on his blog.  You know the ones that call Democrats, DemoRATS.  The ones that say Don Siegelman should rot in jail.  The ones that hate Paul Hubbert and AEA.  The ones that believe Karl Rove can do no wrong.  The ones that believe Bush is right.  I don't pretend to know where Danny's "heart is", but I know where the majority of his commentators hearts are and it's NOT with the Democratic party, in fact it's with the exact opposite.

The point I'm trying to make is that  Alabama should be represented by a real progressive partisian, not a "non partisian" at the DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COVENTION.   The Democratic National Convention is as partisian as it gets.

It's not personal against "Danny" or "Docs" it's partisian.  IMHO this is another example of what is t is wrong with the Democratic party, they always trying to be "non partisian" when we should be partisian.  I bet you won't see the GOP letting a "non partisian blogger" blog from their convention.

See my post below...

I'm not short.  I'm fun size!!

[ Parent ]
I see your point when it comes to the stated requirements (4.00 / 2)
Perhaps a request for reconsideration would be in order.

[ Parent ]
At first I was willing to say, "oh well" and Congrats to Doc (4.00 / 1)

BUT, when you look at the state blogger credential application, it specifically asks the blog to explain why it's an "agent of change" and "effective organizing tool" within the state.

I view Doc's as more of an information clearinghouse.  Definitely not an organizing tool - at least not for progressives.  The only candidates who get much attention are the big money, establishment types.  Insurgent, progressive candidates barely get mentioned.

Not to criticize Danny or Doc's at all.  If you're the owner, you can write about whatever you want to.

But, it does seem at odds with the stated goals of the state blogger pool.  I hate we lost it, because our LIA folks would have been all over the story, covering it from a progressive viewpoint with background and yes, some of our own opinion.

You can get the "he said, he answered" reporting from the MSM.  Who needs it from a blog too?

I'm not short.  I'm fun size!!

Thank you! (4.00 / 2)

Who picked the Bloggers for the DNC? (4.00 / 1)

I'm not the only one complaining about the Blogosphere selectees. The African American Political Pundit is calling it "Jim Crow at the DNC". Evidently there was only one African American blogger invited and not one anyone has every heard of either. They also have a complete list of the selected blogs from each state. Contact the DNC.

BTW, Thanks for adding The African American Political Pundit and Jack and Jill Politics to the LiA blog roll!

Can you add Flashpoint.com to blogroll (4.00 / 1)
It is Brian's blog. It is kinda the conservative alternative to LIA focusing on Madison County and N. Bama.  Brian occassionally posts here about the "Fair Tax" and has a link for LIA on his blog.

It's already there (0.00 / 0)

Red Letter Day in the Reddest of the Red States! (4.00 / 1)

HERE is the common ground post (so there will be no mistake about which one I am referring to):

Here is a preview and the part that made my day!

I’ve often said that voting for Bush was the worst vote that I’ve ever made - twice.  (Not that the alternatives were any better.)  Bush took the mantle of Conservative in Chief and subsequently sullied the image of what it means to be a conservative.  His comrades in the house aided him, also undermining their proclaimed beliefs.

The country found itself in an unpopular war and Congressmen sought to stave off unrest at the ballot box by larding up spending bill after spending bill.  “The voters at home may not like this war, but they’ll love their federally funded municipal parking deck,” they thought.  Such spending bills are anathema to conservatives, but Bush dutifully signed each one.  He chose to wait until Democrats gained power in both houses to show signs of fiscal restraint.  That isn’t leadership.  It isn’t conservatism.  It’s rank, partisan opportunism.

This is proof that Hope is not just a place in Arkansas.  Keep Hope Alive!

Dogs and cats living together! (4.00 / 1)

Yes this is a rare day indeed.

On topic, I thought the decision to send Danny to the Dem convention was a bit peculiar.  While I would argue he runs the best blog in the state and is scrupulously non-partisan (I've thought he leans left at times and commenters here think he leans right, which means he is probably about as middle of the road as they come), he certainly doesn't fit the mold of who you would expect to invite to a partisan convention.

Off topic, I know nothing about the Soapbox blog software, but is there some kind of "subscribe to comments" gizmo like Wordpress has?  I generally don't have time (or the memory!) to check back to see if people respond to comments.

There doesn't seem to be an email feature -- maybe it was discontinued in one of our upgrades -- but you can easily check recent replies to your comments.  Just bookmark that page and take a look now and again after you comment.

For the rest of you who want to do this, click on "Your Name's Page" in the Menu block (upper right) then click on "Comments" (about the middle of the page) then on "Recent Replies" (right below "Comments").  You can then bookmark that page so you can easily see when someone has responded to one of your comments.
