Immigration, Condoms, Jeff Sessions and Foreign Aid

Jeff Sessions' MugI came across a couple of interesting stories this weekend, and they fit together perfectly.

Rep. Mark Kirk (R, Ill) is pushing the idea of sending free condoms to Mexico as a  way to reduce long term illegal immigration.

An Alabama company is the last U.S. condom manufacturer.

Jeff Sessions, concerned about those condom jobs workers has made sure the U.S. Agency for International Development (Usaid) buys all the condoms Alabama American companies can make before they can purchase condoms from foreign producers.  From The New York Times article (link above)

Representative Jim McDermott, a Democrat from Washington State, had seen the devastation of AIDS firsthand in the 1980s as a State Department medical officer in Africa. But he said he could not break what he called the “stranglehold” of Alabama congressmen on the condom rules.

Did you know Alabama congressmen have a "stranglehold" on condom rules?  The condoms are destined for AIDS prevention and family planning programs overseas.  The Alabama condoms cost the government agency over twice what foreign manufactured ones would cost.  The federal program is pretty much all that is keeping the condom company in business, so Sessions is protecting several hundred Alabama jobs ($7 to $8 per hour) that would otherwise move overseas.

Why do you suppose he isn't tooting his own horn about this?

Coincidentally, Sessions is also concerned with illegal immigration.  Perhaps he and Rep. Mark Kirk can work out a deal so that the government buys Alabama condoms to give away in Mexico so illegals won't sneak across the border.

What?  You thought condoms only kept sperm from going where you don't want them --  not fully grown humans?  Obviously, you are not a Republican.

Sorry, I seized up (4.00 / 2)

At Alabama Congressman having a "stranglehold" on their condoms - wait, no, that was on condom rules.  Neeveeerrrrr miiiiiiind...it's ok so long as everyone holds his own.

I don't want to know about Sessions "tooting his horn" or any of those other euphemisms. So long as he doesn't do it on the floor of the United States Senate.  DO NOT VISUALIZE! DO NOT VISUALIZE!!

The irony, though - Jeff Sessions promoting "protectionism"! What would Grover Norquist say? What would Tom Friedman say? What would George F. Will say?  Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III is protecting jobs that produce protection! I can hear James Dobson spooling up...

Well, when the rubber meets the road...

"The Alabama condoms cost the government agency over twice what foreign manufactured ones would cost. "

Hopefully this is because we're paying the workers something similar to a decent wage and not locking them in a latex saturated sweatshop hell for pennies a day. If Americans and American agencies don't buy from other Americans, then who will?  Not the Chinese.

Actually I think sending condoms to Mexico is a great idea.  The Mexicans can then fill them will delicious candies and send 'em back!  We can hang the candy stuffed condoms up at parties, and hit 'em with a stick until all the wonderful candy falls out.

And no, I don't subscribe to the Freudian belief system.  Sometimes a candy filled condom is just a candy filled condom...

They are Alabama jobs (4.00 / 1)

The pay is not good, but the physical conditions in the photos did not look too bad.  Kind of ironic that free trade Republicans have been fighting to keep these condom manufacturing jobs in the U.S. for years and not a word about it ever gets in the local papers.  You'd think they would be eager for people to know that they are protecting American jobs.

Oh, wait a minute.  Those Republicans are free trade supporters, so I guess this good deed actually conflicts with some of their core principles.  Maybe that's why they don't talk about this.  It can't be because condoms are involved.

Good (4.00 / 2)

for Jeff!  Keep those Alabama condoms coming on store shelves, and in every African wallet.  Now, if he'd just let the factory workers oraganize, he might look human.

Are they advocating a major birth control program in a Catholic country? heh

Good luck boys ^o^

Cultural sensitivity (4.00 / 1)
The Republicans don't really have any. They've been so busy villifying those brown people south of the border that I doubt they even realize those people are Christians of any sort.

"Are they advocating a major birth control program in a Catholic country? heh"

I thought the same thing.  Don't they know the Pope has BC under wraps? That's why I figured we could at least get some pinatas out of the deal. :p

I haven't been to Mexico in years, but let me tell you, homeless kids starving on the streets isn't a whole lot of fun to see, and I'm sure it's no fun for the starving children either.  I can't imagine sanctioning bringing children into a life of hell rather than preventing pregnancy in the first place.  People who lead privleged lives have no business making rules for the common people.

Where the hell is my Che Guevara hat?

I'm laughing too hard to type! (4.00 / 2)

That's OK, Kathy (4.00 / 1)
Sometimes laughing is better than typing.  Lord knows we already have too little to laugh about and too much to type about.
