It could have been a normal day, but didn't

(A great man has left us.  For the better, hopefully. - promoted by countrycat)

Eugene C. Patterson, Editor and Civil Rights Crusader, Dies at 89*

Eugene C. Patterson’s editorials in the Atlanta Constitution inspired students at the Atlanta University consortium, Morehouse College, Spelman College, Clark College, Morris Brown College, and Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC). Make A Mark

His editorials inspired some students, who could have chosen to ignore Civil Rights, from the University of Georgia, Georgia Institute of Technology, Agnes Scott College, and Emory University.  Southern students who could have chosen to ignore the civil rights struggle, instead live less dangerously as white folk.

His editorials eventually changed Atlanta, Georgia some too.

Maybe you.

Mr Eugene C. Patterson could have passed for white instead of human.

My condolences to his family, his state, and our country.

Read his book, The Changing South of Gene Patterson: Journalism and Civil Rights, 1960-1968.

That’s how I will mourn him, (re)read his book.

He changes me some too every day.

thank you! (0.00 / 0)

I wanted to write about him this morning, but life & paid work totally got in the way of blogging.

From the NPR story:

FOLKENFLIK: As a young man he had little to lose. Gene Patterson was born in rural Georgia to a schoolteacher and a bank cashier, a white couple struggling amid the Great Depression. He attended North Georgia College and then the University of Georgia - after which the U.S. Army beckoned. It was World War II.

As his longtime friend Roy Peter Clark observed, a formative period.

ROY PETER CLARK: For a young Southern boy to go off to Europe and to see first-hand the consequences of racial hatred, in the form of the Nazi genocide, changed him forever.

"The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness."  - John Kenneth Galbraith
