"Ten Dumbest Things Said By Alabama Republicans" 2012 Edition. Get Your Nominations In Now!

Mon Dec 10, 2012 at 11:50:26 AM CST

It's that most wonderful time of year when we begin compiling our annual list of the "10 Dumbest Things Said By Alabama Republicans."  We expect competition for the 2012 list to be fierce.  It'll be tough to choose between the bizarre statements of the tinfoil hat twins (Hugh McInnish and Bill Armistead) and well, pretty much anything Senator Shadrack McGill has ever said in public.AL GOP clowns

Here are the 2011 "winners" (if you can call them that):

  1. Part 1 - Counting down from 10 to 6
  2. Part 2 - And the winner is.....

Generally, our LIA bloggers take it easy during the last part of the year.  We like to kick back and enjoy our holidays like everyone.  But this feature isn't work: it's a guilty pleasure - like a big tub of buttered popcorn at the movies.

In general, we focus on state Republican party officials and state and local GOP elected officials.  But if someone is interested in taking on the task of compiling a list of our US Senators & Representatives' crazy talk, we'd love to post it!

We'll publish our 2012 list the last week of December.

Please share your suggestions in the comments!

I'd like to nominate the following gems... (4.00 / 2)

from God's State Senator from Northeast Alabama:

"It's a Biblical principle. If you double a teacher's pay scale, you'll attract people who aren't called to teach…To go in and raise someone's child for eight hours a day, or many people's children for eight hours a day, requires a calling. It better be a calling in your life. I know I wouldn't want to do it, OK?...And these teachers that are called to teach, regardless of the pay scale, they would teach. It's just in them to do. It's the ability that God give 'em. And there are also some teachers, it wouldn't matter how much you would pay them, they would still perform to the same capacity…If you don't keep that in balance, you're going to attract people who are not called, who don't need to be teaching our children. So, everything has a balance."

“I’m not a politician, nor am I a polished speaker. I will be truthful even if it costs me in the long run.”

“(I) want to try to get people involved in pro-life bills…I believe you cannot get dollars ahead of morality if we claim to be a Christian state. There is nothing more important than pro-life issues.”

9.13, 4.82, Just left of Gandhi.

Oh yeah! (4.00 / 2)

I have him in mind for a couple of slots!  Thanks!

"The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness."  - John Kenneth Galbraith

I missed that one.  Too bad our state can't apply that principle to actual moral issues like healthcare...
