Alabama AFL-CIO Experiences Major Brain Fart

Roy Moore, UNION ApprovedAlabama AFL-CIO endorses Roy Moore for Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.

State AFL-CIO President Al Henley said Monday it's the first time the union organization has endorsed Moore, who was the only Republican endorsed for state office when the organization met in Montgomery to pick its favorites.

Henley says Moore has a record both as a circuit judge and as a Supreme Court justice of ruling fairly and not being controlled by corporate interests.

Pardon me, Al, but there's a reason y'all have never endorsed Roy before -- and it's named Roy Moore.  Moore was a major embarrassment to this state the last time he had his seat in the Chief Justice's chair -- before it got kicked out -- and there's no sign he'll pursue more sane, sensible or fair policies this time around.  Working people in Alabama are not well served when zealots who thumb their nose at our laws are in charge of the court system.

When both candidates are awful, you don't have to endorse either one.  "Probably going to win anyway" and "not much worse than Harry Lyon" are no excuses for putting the union stamp of approval on Roy Moore's brand of extremism.

Major fail, AFL-CIO.

Amen. (4.00 / 2)

I plan to write in "None of the above" on my ballot.

No way will I vote for either of these clowns.

how did it happen? (4.00 / 2)
i'd like to see an accurate article on how the endorsement came about. i assume there was a meeting (of whom) of state afl-cio delegates (who and how selected) and someone (who, which union, what's his or her connection to moore, gop, if any) made a motion to endorse moore. was there a discussion?. who said what? was there a roll call vote? what was the vote? moore used to be supported by trial lawyers in his lower judicial positions -- he was not anti-little guy in those way back days. i'm assuming with no evidence the support within afl-cio came from true xtian believers who liked the 10 commandments monument. did any newspaper cover this?

ass ociated press (4.00 / 2)
i just saw the AP version of the endorsement on al.com. if that's all AP sent out it's a piss poor excuse for journalism. it leaves huge questions. mainly -- the real why.

I don't care why they endorsed Moore (4.00 / 1)
And I don't care much how it happened.  I'm assuming some kind of mass temporary cognitive malfunction -- a batch of bad mushrooms got into the lunch sandwiches, maybe, or somebody spiked their bourbon with Kool-aid -- but they need to be rethinking this endorsement.  ASAP.  Roy Moore may not be in thrall to big corporations, but he's no friend to unions, either.

Work harder and work smarter!

Speechless.... (4.00 / 1)
and that doesn't happen very often.

"The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness."  - John Kenneth Galbraith

Have we forgotten (4.00 / 2)
His call for the state to execute gays? Or does the AFL-CIO just not care? (and yes, I will be asking my union friends this question)

From Joe Openshaw at Bessemer Opinions, quoting Judge Moore's written opinion:

The State carries the power of the sword, that is, the power to prohibit conduct with physical penalties, such as confinement and even execution. It must use that power to prevent the subversion of children toward this lifestyle, to not encourage a criminal lifestyle

"If guns kept America safe, then America would surely be the safest country in the whole world." - Rep. Carolyn Maloney

Thank you (0.00 / 0)
I had indeed forgotten that disgusting Royism.  There are so many disgusting Royisms ...

Work harder and work smarter!

It seems when it comes to Alabama chapters of national unions or state-based unions-in-hiding (AEA) don't seem to care about social justice (0.00 / 0)
It's all about aligning themselves with the devil so they can be on his right hand to prevent themselves from being in his path.  I'm not surprised by the antics of these groups because they are more concerned with protecting themselves rather than doing the right thing.  This is going to be a very terrible chapter in state history for LGBTs and human rights...

how it happened (4.00 / 1)
you can kiss off how it happened if you want but, for what they're worth, AFL-CIO will endorse in years ahead. be good to know how this happened so that maybe a similar endorsement won't occur in the future.
