Before I begin, I’d like to re-introduce myself to all of you. My name is Christian Smith and I am the Democratic Nominee for Mobile County Treasurer. I am 26 years old and a double graduate of the University of South Alabama. I have always been pretty involved in politics, but not enough to ever actually run. I’ve always been more behind the scenes and running data; however I have decided to run at this age and in this political climate because if not me, then who? If not now, then when? I can’t complain about business as usual if I am not willing to step up to the plate and try to make a difference. So this is a plea for those all around the state that are just like me that have gotten so fed up with our local politicians and have stepped up to the plate to better our communities. If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’re pretty active in politics and care about the results of the 2012 election. Much like you I am a huge supporter of our President and our congressional candidates that we are trying to send to Washington; however I need your support as do many other local candidates around the state. Our most basic level of government that we constantly have a voice in is that of our local elected officials from our County Commissioners to our Revenue Commissioners to (in my case) County Treasurer. We’ve seen many of our local offices turn from Blue to Red all across the state. It happened here in Mobile County in 2008. Every local Democratic candidate lost by less than 20,000 votes. I know, I know this seems like A LOT of votes, but when you put it into the perspective of there were over 20,000 people that ONLY voted for the President and not any other office on the ballot it doesn’t seem so crazy to say anymore. Mobile County could’ve been a blue county had we supported the bottom of the ticket just as we supported the top of the ticket and that’s the case all around this state and in this county. So let’s start today, you and me, in pledging our support for local candidates around the state. Alabama can and will be Blue again and it starts right at home in our backyard. We have qualified candidates running at the local level so let’s pledge our support to turn Alabama blue, one office and one county at a time. We are here to move Alabama forward. Can you -- will you -- support a local candidate?
