Conservative Evangelicals & TEA Party Types Hit New Low In Wake of Colorado Shooting

To hear these guys tell the story, the reason a dozen people are dead & many more wounded is because of: liberals, civil libertarians, atheists, & Hollywood.  Because certainly, easy access to body armor, huge amounts of ammo, & weapons played absolutely no part....

I'm so happy that I know many, many perfectly reasonable, devout Christian people who recoil at the remarks of these Evangelical "leaders."  I hate it that they get tarred with the same brush as these bozos.

The intolerance on display is truly shocking:

In a column in One News Now, Newcombe wrote that the shooting was evidence that “we’re reaping what we’ve been sowing as a society,” explaining, “Lawsuit after lawsuit, often by misguided ‘civil libertarians,’ have chased away any fear of God in the land.”

On the same radio segment, Fred Jackson, the host and director of the American Family Association, similarly blamed Hollywood, liberal media and churches for contributing to mass shootings:

I have to think that all of this, whether it’s the Hollywood movies, whether it’s what we see on the internets, whether it’s liberal bias in the media, whether it’s our politicians changing public policy, I think all of those somehow have fit together—and I have to say also churches who are leaving the authority of Scripture and losing their fear of God—all of those things have seem to have come together to give us these kinds of incidents.

What's also shocking - although not very surprising - is the reaction from TEA party Congressman Louie Gohmert.  He used the shooting to lament  atheists & attacks on Christianity.

Um.... so somehow the shooter was responding to attacks on Christianity or he had seen too many "Hollywood movies" or he was a civil libertarian or.... what exactly?

Gohmert also lamented the fact that nobody else inside the theater was packing.  Because that's what you want in an enclosed space with hundreds of panicked adults & children fleeing a nutcase wearing body armor: a number of civilians also armed & firing into the crowd.

He was joined in his dismay by former AZ State Senator Russell Pearce, who was the sponsor of Arizona's anti-immigrant bill & who was later recalled by voters:

"Had someone been prepared and armed they could have stopped this "bad" man from most of this tragedy. He was two and three feet away from folks, I understand he had to stop and reload. Where were the men of flight 93????," Pearce wrote.

Yep.  All you victims... it was your own damn fault for being such wusses.

Question:  Supposing that a number of people in the theater were armed when the shooting started...  How do these armed strangers know who's part of the shooting conspiracy & who's a good Samaritan?  How do the law enforcement people distinguish between the good guys & bad guys when they arrive on the scene?

I know we have people with law enforcement experience here at the blog.  What do you think?

The 'arm everybody and let them sort it out' philosophy (4.00 / 1)

Frankly, I don't want to live in a society where we all need to be armed and prepared to shoot in order to live in harmony.  That feels like a giant step backwards, to me.

But for all the folks like Louie Gohmert and Russell Pierce, who think the answer lies in more people with guns in darkened theaters, please consider what happened in broad daylight in an Arizona parking lot a year and a half ago.  An armed citizen named Joe Zamudio very nearly shot one of the (unarmed) citizens who had just subdued the guy who shot Gabby Giffords and 17 other people.

"I came out of that store, I clicked the safety off, and I was ready," he explained on Fox and Friends. "I had my hand on my gun. I had it in my jacket pocket here. And I came around the corner like this." Zamudio demonstrated how his shooting hand was wrapped around the weapon, poised to draw and fire. As he rounded the corner, he saw a man holding a gun. "And that's who I at first thought was the shooter," Zamudio recalled. "I told him to 'Drop it, drop it!' "

But the man with the gun wasn't the shooter. He had wrested the gun away from the shooter. "Had you shot that guy, it would have been a big, fat mess," the interviewer pointed out.

Zamudio agreed:

I was very lucky. Honestly, it was a matter of seconds. Two, maybe three seconds between when I came through the doorway and when I was laying on top of [the real shooter], holding him down. So, I mean, in that short amount of time I made a lot of really big decisions really fast. … I was really lucky.

When Zamudio was asked what kind of weapons training he'd had, he answered: "My father raised me around guns … so I'm really comfortable with them. But I've never been in the military or had any professional training. I just reacted."

The Arizona Daily Star, based on its interview with Zamudio, adds two details to the story. First, upon seeing the man with the gun, Zamudio "grabbed his arm and shoved him into a wall" before realizing he wasn't the shooter. And second, one reason why Zamudio didn't pull out his own weapon was that "he didn't want to be confused as a second gunman."

Gohmert and Pierce have been watching too many John Wayne movies on TV.  The only thing more dangerous than one person shooting in a crowded theater is two people shooting in a crowded theater.
