Outage.

We were down most of Saturday because of a power outage at the Amazon Cloud data center where Left in Alabama is actually hosted.  This e-storm, which also took down Netflix, Pinterest, Instagram and others, in addition to the entire Soapblox network, was caused by an honest to gosh hurricane-like storm in Virginia.

People who live in the clouds should beware of storms, I guess.

Concern over just this sort of outage is part of the reason I'm still clinging to my old-style, hold it in your hand, read-it-even-when-the-internet-is-down, paper books.

Many thanks to all of you who have emailed or messaged us via facebook to express concern while the site was down.  We're sorry for the inconvenience, but it's awfully nice to know so many people care.  FYI, we did not choose to have this blog reside on the Cloud and are definitely going to be exploring other options for reliable hosting.

In fact, we're thinking of making some significant changes to the look and functionality of LiA.  If there's anything you want to see added/deleted/changed, now is a good time to let us know about it.  For once, pet peeves are welcome.

There still may be a few bugs (4.00 / 1)

mooncat, I'm just thankful (4.00 / 2)
that LIA is back up and running again. Everything, to me, seems to be displaying properly. Things we have no control over happen at times. Don't worry about something that's not your fault.

Don't mean to stir up a hornet's nest..... (4.00 / 2)

"Concern over just this sort of outage is part of the reason I'm still clinging to my old-style, hold it in your hand, read-it-even-when-the-internet-is-down, paper books."

Well, that's all and good and what-not, but in my own experience, if there's a storm that really knocks out the power, I'm still not able to read those "paper" books.  It's usually too dark for my tastes, and trying to read by flashlight (or worse, candle light) is a waste of time.

The reality is that it's the CLOUD that's the problem.  If you keep your e-books stored ON THE DEVICE ITSELF, then you'll be in pretty good shape (at least as long as the battery holds up).

Power outage (4.00 / 3)
Our daughters live in the Maryland suburbs--Rockville and Takoma Park.  I just got a message from our son-in-law in TP saying that their electricity has been off since Friday, and they're keeping cool by staying at the local pool and by sleeping in the basement of their house.  He says that the power may not be restored for another seven days.

Not an inconvenience. It's another Inconvenient Truth (4.00 / 2)

What the people in Virginia, Maryland, and D.C. are going through must seem like a living, waking, nightmare. Millions dealing with 100 degree heat and no electricity.

This is yet another wake up call. The world temperature is is approximately 1.25 degrees (F) above average. Can we survive 2.0?

If we get bumped again, I'll certainly understand.

October 2012 was the 332nd consecutive month with a global temperature above the 20th century average. The last month with below-average temperature was February 1985. - N.O.A.A.

Air conditioning (4.00 / 2)

We all know that oil and convenient transportation have changed the way humans live, but may not realize how air conditioning has changed our economy.  Without it, the South would be barely habitable in the summer months.  And, as you point out, those hot summer temps are becoming more common even in the North.  Take away our air conditioning and we'll start dropping like flies.

I feel so sorry for those folks in cities with no power this weekend.

It make you wonder (4.00 / 1)

Had Ronald Reagan NOT taken down the White House solar panels (that Carter put up), maybe solar power would would have caught on more. Then, not only would all those folks have power, this heat wave would not be as severe in the first place. (and no hurricane like storm in Virginia either)

when i comment i must be doing something wrong afterward because it is easier for me to close out and start over than to click and go back to reading next post.

my daughter lives in Arlington va and got power back on this am. grandson in suburban md -- rockville -- still without power. another grandson in other part of arlington i think has power back, not sure. damage was done by a straight line spread out long wind of hurricane force. trees down all over arlington.
