Why Are We Suddenly Awash In Republican Craziness?

(Secondarily, why can't I read Carl Hiaasen in my local paper?)

If you’re mystified, you’re not alone. Ignoring years of public-opinion polls, the GOP is boldly marching backwards into the 1960s to question whether contraception is a legitimate health-care benefit.

...

As political miscalculations go, this one could be epic. If you’re looking for a sure way to galvanize female voters against your own party, attack birth control.

The Republican victory in 2010 was due to their focus on the economy -- where are the jobs -- so why are they now all fringey social issues, all the time?  Bill Maher* explains the obvious -- the economy got better!

Bill Maher tweet

When you've got nothing on the economy, go for the crazy.  Hiaasen predicts a bad Kool-Aid hangover for Republicans:

If the Republicans stay on this sorry, dead-end path, Obama’s task is clear:

Ice the champagne.

*Alabama Democrats still have a few tickets available for Bill Maher's March 17 performance in Huntsville, which include prime seating plus a Chairman's reception before the show.

Thank you for the Hiaasen hit! (0.00 / 0)

Wait, the economy got BETTER? (0.00 / 0)

Ummm... no?

Sure, the unemployment rate is down, and I understand that more people are being hired than has been the case the past few years.  But the major reason why the unemployment rate is dropping is because many people are not looiking for work anymore and the government has stopped counting them.

Unless I'm mistaken, the last monthly report showed over a million people dropping out of the workforce.  That's why the rate dropped... not because tons of people are working now, but because another huge chunk gave up on finding a job in this economy.

You call this better?  If that's the direction we're heading, and if we're seriously considering this a good thing, we're in a LOT of trouble.  Our car is on fire, we're being told why that's a GOOD thing, AND WE'RE BUYING IT!!!

Gee, this is what I was saying from the 80's on... (4.00 / 1)

People getting discouraged, not looking for work, the government doesn't count them anymore, and a "huge chunk gave up on finding a job in this economy"

Except, back in the 80's (and again in the 00's), for pointing this out,  I was condemned as a defeatist, Communist, dirty hippie who was just defending losers who were too lazy to pull themselves up by their bootstraps...

So, welcome to my world.

Glad you used a car analogy, PoliticsAlabama; it's one of my favorites. (4.00 / 1)

If our country is a car and it isn't running right, we have a couple of choices.  Take it down to Right-wing-nuts Service Center and have the spark plugs removed,m the gas tank filled with water and the tires flattened, which will effectively mean we don't spend any more money on the car...or take it to Obama's Fix-A-Lot and get new sparkplugs, a better gas mileage and all terrain tires, so that we will spend more today, eventually spend less, and continue to get an improved ride.

Ya' pays your money (vote) and ya' takes yer choice!

Well, I disagree with that. (2.00 / 1)
I gotta tell you, I'm not impressed with Obama's economic message.  Higher taxes and massive deficit spending do not a healthy country make.  Bankruptcy, yes... THAT it could make.

Like every Republican I have talked to lately, (4.00 / 1)

you ignore the fact (and it is a historical fact) that stimulating the economy enables recovery from recession, while austerity has always made it worse. People who ignore history...

Obama wants to put people to work on infra-structure, roads, bridges, airports, schools, clean energy, and other public projects.  This results in paychecks for millions, who then pay taxes, buy groceries, move into better housing, send kids to college, etc. all of which sends the economy upward. Yes, there is an initial expenditure, but the rewards are undeniable, unless we ignore history as noted above.
