Shadrack McGill's No Good, Terrible, Very Bad Public Meeting

by: countrycat

Mon Feb 13, 2012 at 21:03:25 PM CST

After tonight's public meeting in Madison County, the kindest thing I can say about State Senator Shadrack McGill (SD-08) is that he needs to spend more time with his mouth shut and his mind open. During a sometimes-contentious public meeting in Madison County tonight,  McGill got just one friendly question - about widening Winchester Road - and he couldn't answer it.  He did answer numerous other questions about women's health, religion, education funding, tax reform, and state employee retirement.Shadrack McGill, Theocrat

We'll have a lot of fun video up soon, but the entire event lasted about 90 minutes so editing will take a while.  A few highlights though....

I haven't had that much fun at a public meeting since angry Save Alabama PACT parents confronted Kay Ivey with questions about her competence.  Let's just say that nobody would even bother to question Senator McGill's competence because his lack of it is splayed out in full living color.

  • McGill lamented that last term, he got just one call (from a pastor) in support of the legislature's 7 anti-abortion bills, but got thousands of calls about the budget, education, and other issues.  McGill seemed genuinely puzzled that people were more interested in "bills pertaining to money more than morality."

When asked if perhaps that showed his constituents were indeed more worried about education, jobs, taxes, etc. than they were about abortion, McGill explained:  "they just need to be educated."

  • One of the legislative priorities that McGill listed in his PowerPoint presentation was that we needed to cut "unnecessary programs that are not proven to work" out of the education budget.  When asked for specifics: "Which programs, Senator?"  McGill couldn't name a single one.  "I'm relying on you to tell me," he smirked.

  • Once again, the Senator got lost in the verbal weeds as he once again tried to justify his statement that teachers don't need raises but legislators do "to stop corruption."  The longer the poor guy talked about "balance," the more bizarre it got.  If I can stand to watch that performance again, I'll post the video.

  • McGill proclaimed that "God placed me here" in the Legislature.  Wonder where they sent the voter registration card?

  • To complete his Deity analogy, McGill complained about being "crucified" and "misquoted" by the press.  Hey brother, we have it all on tape tonight!

  • To McGill, "nothing is more important" than protecting fertilized eggs.  In a truly bizarre answer about in-vitro fertilization, he turned it into an abortion discussion, describing a scenario where a woman would decide "on the spur of the moment" to have an abortion.  Yeah... that happens all the time, right?

On a whim, she pulls into the clinic, asks the doctor "please kill the life inside me" and then asks the doctor - while he's at it - "please kill me too."

Would we allow that?  McGill asked.  Nobody in the audience responded because we were too busy wondering "WTF kind of drugs is this guy on?"

Hoping that whets your appetite enough for you to stay tuned for some of the scariest, most riveting video you'll see for a while.

Okay--I have been hearing about God measuring all the mountains and valleys etc on a big scale (4.00 / 2)

so that when he started spinning the earth it won't wobble.  Please show that video. I bet we could make it a you tube sensation. Except that itcontinues to make our state look stupid.

He repeated that (4.00 / 1)

So yes, video will be available.

I was very impressed with the thoughtful nature of the questions from Sen. Shadrach's constituents.  The folks in that crowd had obviously given these issues a lot of thought.  Unfortunately, they were the only ones.

Senate District 8 is screwed until 2015 ... unless he resigns first.

I posted... (4.00 / 1)
his comments from a meeting with the Time-Journal on one of the earlier McGill threads here on LiA and at the beginning of the video he mentions this.  I have to admit I was kinda floored, even after hearing his comments about it being an affront to God to raise teacher pay.

melmel, Newsflash! Our state? It IS stupid. (0.00 / 0)

Nobody has to make it look that way.  Were it not true, we would not continue to elect Beauregard and Big Dick and Jo Bonner and -yes- Shadrack McGill.

And sorry for the bad typing and grammar. I'm laughing too hard. (4.00 / 3)

You would not laugh if you had been there (4.00 / 1)

This was the worst performance I can imagine by a public official.  Willfully ignorant on so many important points, and a mind completely closed on too many others.

Maybe I can look back and laugh in a few days.

Sorry I couldn't make it (4.00 / 2)
I was busy pulling up to the drive-up window to order a quickie abortion!  What planet do these PRO lifers come from?  I don't think it's pro-life at all.  I see it as pro government interference in the most difficult decision any woman would ever be faced with. The conservatives constantly say the government needs to get off our backs.  I say, "Get the hell out of my personal business, Mr. Government!

Of course it's not "pro-life" (4.00 / 1)

It NEVER has been about "life."  It's about the fetus.  Once the fetus is capable of living outside the mother, the "pro-lifers" don't care.  Look at how quick they are to cut social programs for children as well as the less fortunate.

I'm just waiting for these people to break into "Every Sperm Is Sacred" (from "Monty Python's The Meaning of Life") but WITHOUT any hint of irony.

TWO QUESTIONS (4.00 / 2)

1) When does the video go up?

2) Where did you get that sweet, sweet mustache pic and is it public domain or can you give us (Second Front) permission to use it by any chance?

It's on his Facebook page! (4.00 / 1)
But y'all are totally welcome to use ours as well.  I cropped it a bit & reduced the size.

If you want a really big copy, that's on his FB wall post album that - as of last night anyway - it totally open for public perusal.

To all those who thought he wouldn't be worse than his predecessor . . . . (4.00 / 2)
Identity some better candidates--NOW! And have them start running on education, jobs, taxes. . . .

candidate (4.00 / 2)
opposition candidates going around the district, getting publicity, is exactly what should be happening now. also, it would be great if shadrack got more national attention, although he may just be smart enough to tone it down if he's talking to network news or big town papers. i dont like making extra work for other people but if anyone knows how to get segments of film showing shadrack at his best to jon stewart and stephen colbert, it needs to be done. any one with media credentials who can get a question(s) to bentley, to national republican campaign officials, about "damage" shadrack may be doing to the republican party in alabama, and wherever else his views are in media, needs to do it. dont worry about alabama's reputation -- the point needs to be the alabama republican party's reputation.

Shad - Do Not Underestimate (0.00 / 0)

Yes, God told him to run.  Yes, he's not real bright.  But never underestimate your opponent - he appears to be learning quickly.

Remember - the average Alabama voter is a moron.  Which means half the people are dumber that that.

And also remember-- Democrats never passed a strong ethics bill. Ever.  It took Republicans just a few days.

Ethics bill (4.00 / 1)
After the Republicans passed an ethics bill, they immediately watered it down to make it wide open for unlimited "contributions."

And ignored what they did pass... (4.00 / 1)
Or have we forgotten Riley's PAC, Dickie Drake's mailings, Graddick's illegal acceptance of funds, etc?

Where do folks get the idea that conscience is a consequence-free exemption from legal obligations?

[ Parent ]
I don't think that average Alabamians (4.00 / 1)

are morons.

Most people are just struggling to keep their heads above water and don't have the time to track legislation like big game hunters.

I loved the part of McGill's presentation where he whined about only getting "one phone call" supporting the anti-abortion bills but got "thousands" about "money issues."

Polls consistently show that even people who place themselves in the anti-abortion column are more concerned about jobs, the economy, education, infrastructure, etc.  Abortion is not a priority for the vast majority of them and that's where McGill is out of step.  he wants to legislate his version of morality first and fix the economy later.

He's not just clueless on the issues.  He's out of step with the voters as well.

Scary and Clueless... (4.00 / 1)

Are how I would describe some of this supporters on his FB page.  It's kinda of like laughing at the class clown, your teacher tells you not to because you are enabling him, but you just can't help it.  They're on there reaffirming his belief that he was put there (elected) by God and is there to do God's work...

Seems to me God wouldn't want his children to go hungry or uneducated.  God would want the best for his children, not some hack who sports a "Chester the Molester" moustache.

Its folks like McGill and his supporters who help affirm to me the very real possibility that if there is a deity running things he is either a) asleep at the wheel b.) doesnt really care that much or c.) isn't there and was never there in the first place.
