2941 Monthly Weather Records Broken in the U.S. this Year

Sun Dec 18, 2011 at 11:32:02 AM CST

In a recent diary of mine, a question of extreme weather frequency was brought up. (in the comment section) I had pointed out the extreme events of 2010:

  1. Earth’s hottest year on record
  2. Most extreme winter Arctic atmospheric circulation on record; “Snowmageddon” results
  3. Arctic sea ice: lowest volume on record, 3rd lowest extent
  4. Record melting in Greenland, and a massive calving event
  5. Second most extreme shift from El Niño to La Niña
  6. Second worst coral bleaching year
  7. Wettest year over land
  8. Amazon rainforest experiences its 2nd 100-year drought in 5 years
  9. Global tropical cyclone activity lowest on record
  10. A hyperactive Atlantic hurricane season: 3rd busiest on record
  11. A rare tropical storm in the South Atlantic
  12. Strongest storm in Southwestern U.S. history
  13. Strongest non-coastal storm in U.S. history
  14. Weakest and latest-ending East Asian monsoon on record
  15. No monsoon depressions in India’s Southwest Monsoon for 2nd time in 134 years
  16. The Pakistani flood: most expensive natural disaster in Pakistan’s history
  17. The Russian heat wave and drought: deadliest heat wave in human history
  18. Record rains trigger Australia’s most expensive natural disaster in history
  19. Heaviest rains on record trigger Colombia’s worst flooding disaster in history
  20. Tennessee’s 1-in-1000 year flood kills 30, does $2.4 billion in damage

And now a new report from the NRDC (with interactive map) clearly shows the frequency of extreme weather continued into 2011. The report is from the January thru October time-line so the 2941 total will be even higher by year's end. A newly-released analysis by the IPCC concluded that:

"Climate change will amplify extreme heat, heavy precipitation, and the highest wind speeds of tropical storms."

I repeat my original stance in aforementioned diary. We are undergoing "Shock & Awe" as a direct result of bribes given to elected officials by Big Oil & Coal. Extreme events from climate change has been predicted again and again. The predictions are all coming true. We now have the climate skeptics in checkmate. The GOP will still not accept it as fact. But not one of them has a scientific leg to stand on in this regard.

Even the GOP's tame scientists have abandoned them (4.00 / 3)

But the decades of stalling by Big Fossil Fuel has taken its toll on the planet.  I came across a startling figure on carbon emissions this week -- you may have already mentioned it -- that sent chills up my spine.

“An analysis released over the weekend tells us that global carbon emissions leaped 5.9% in 2010, the largest absolute jump since the Industrial Revolution. Compare the nearly 6% increase in pollution last year to the 3% yearly growth in 2000-2010, and 1% in the 90s. Notice a trend?”

I do notice a trend, and it's headed in the wrong direction.

Ouch! (4.00 / 3)

I had missed that particular piece of information. Thank you Mooncat. And a big thanks to all that post information regarding, climate, pollution, weather, alt energy/transportation, etc...

5.9% sounds about right. China adds 40,000 new automobiles to their roads, DAILY. President Obama has had to cave-in to the Scorched Earth Society in Congress on occasion to get them to cooperate on the most basic of levels in other areas.

How much longer can the frozen tundra remain un-thawed? If it does thaw, enough methane to double our greenhouse effect would be released. The possibility of our extinction would be greater than 50% at that point.

October 2012 was the 332nd consecutive month with a global temperature above the 20th century average. The last month with below-average temperature was February 1985. - N.O.A.A.

thawing tundra? (4.00 / 3)
geez! hadn't heard about that aspect -what's the story there?

A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on. -Churchill

Look for the film "Earth 2100" on the History Chanel (4.00 / 2)

"Earth 2100" explains it best. There is a massive supply of ancient methane, frozen in many Arctic area regions. (it's been there for millions of years) If the ice thaws, the methane is released. As a greenhouse gas, methane is 25% more potent that Co2. When you hear the phrase: "Point of no return" in regards to climate change, that's what they're talking about.

Correction (0.00 / 0)

I had wrote that methane is 25% more potent than Co2 as a greenhouse gas. What I meant to say was: Methane is 25 times more potent than Co2 as a greenhouse gas.

Sorry about that. The 2941 broken weather records gave me a bit of a dizzy spell.
