Shorter Mo Brooks: We Got Ours

by: mooncat

Congressional Republicans have been using the FEMA Disaster Relief Fund as a political football.  Now there's a real possibility of a government shutdown because they've insisted on budget resolutions that either don't replenish the FEMA fund or cut fuel efficiency programs to offset disaster relief funding.  Amazingly, even Republicans (like those from Alabama) representing areas recently been struck by natural disasters and receiving FEMA aid are opposed to funding FEMA.

Now Mo Brooks (R, AL-05) offers a window onto the thinking of such Republicans, essentially "We already got ours, screw everybody else!"

U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R) said most of the FEMA money for north Alabama storm victims had already been distributed, minimizing the local impact of any potential shutdown.

Apparently the April 27th tornadoes have inoculated Brooks' district so he doesn't expect any more natural disasters for awhile, thus no need to fund FEMA.  Even leaving off the FEMA funding, it's incredibly shortsighted of Brooks to pooh-pooh the consequences of a federal shutdown when his district includes Redstone Arsenal, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and federal contractors who employ tens of thousands of Alabamians.

Could Mo Brooks be any more out of touch? (4.00 / 2)
With a normal climate, the next major tornado outbreak would be 20-50 years from now. But we don't have a normal climate anymore. And if "Oily" Mo had his druthers, we'd have a climate that can't sustain human life at all. Mo Brooks just might be the worst Congressman in U.S. history.

So Mo thinks we need to cut (4.00 / 2)

"lesser priority items?"

Let's start with his salary and health benefits.  Cuz those aren't EVEN on my priority list!

Mo says there will be FEMA money (4.00 / 2)

Mo was just on the news a little while ago saying FEMA is safe. BUT, the GOP plan to get the money to pay for it would come from cutting policies that protect us from disaster causing global warming.

It seems like a story out of fantasy land. Members of the GOP in the House of Representatives do not want add to spending by funding critical disaster relief after Hurricane Irene, so they are trying to cut funding to advance the development of clean vehicles (which, of course, are critical to cutting global warming and limiting the billion-dollar disasters we see in the future).
China is kicking our butts in solar power manufacturing. South Korea has scooped up all the patents for L.E.D. lighting. Our only real chance to make any money in the green future is with automobiles. But all we hear from the right is no pressing need for alternative energy/transportation. They are literally standing at the barn with a can of gas in one hand and a torch in the other.

Brooks on gridlock (4.00 / 2)
In a supposedly nonpartisan speech in Decatur today, Brooks was asked why Washington was so gridlocked. His response:
"One (party) believes that government is the solution to everything. The other believes in the family unit, free enterprise and the traditional values that have made America a great nation."
With that kind of objectivity, how could our nation possibly be in crisis?

"In the choice between changing one's mind and proving there's no need to do so, most people get busy on the proof."

John Kenneth Galbraith
