Don't Make Us Work 'Til We Die

Fast forward twenty years and picture this:

  • A 75 year-old -- in need of cataract surgery -- driving a school bus.
  • An arthritic 72 year old kindergarten teacher struggling to keep up with her charges.
  • A 69 year old cop in need of a new hip, chasing bad guys.
  • A 74 year old firefighter, trying to carry (drag?) an unconcious adult out of a blazing house fire.
  • A 71 year old airframe and powerplant mechanic, with macular degeneration, looking for cracks in the wing spar of an airliner
  • A 73 year old nurse straining to move her knee-replacement patient from the surgical gurney to the hospital bed -- this is going to hurt.

These people can't retire, because Medicare is not there for them, thanks to the Orwellian "Path to Prosperity" of Paul Ryan and all the Republican Members of Congress who are determined to privatize Medicare and Social Security on top of raising the retirement age for everyone.  Imagine how devastating their scheme will be for older American workers.

Medicare as our parents knew it won't be there.

Instead, retirees will get a voucher that covers a portion of what private insurance will cost -- and covers less every year.  To afford health care they'll have to keep on working ... until they die.  And if they can no longer hold a job, well ... you can see where that goes.

There will be rallies in 18 states -- 52 of them at last count -- on April 27 and 28 where current retirees will demonstrate how hard or even impossible it would be for them to continue working at the jobs they retired from.

Go to www.worktilwedie.org ... look around, sign the petition, sign up for the Virtual Rally if there isn't one in Alabama -- and there isn't yet -- and then tell your friends about this.  This is important.  It's our future.  How do you want to spend it?

Scare Tactics (0.00 / 0)
I really hope no one tries to accuse the other side of using scare tactics after this garbage.  There are legitimate reasons to oppose Paul Ryan's budget, but I hate seeing either side resorting to fear to win the day.

If you're under 55 (0.00 / 0)

Paul Ryan's budget should scare you to action, if not to death.  Yes, they're keeping the Medicare name, but that's all.  Vouchers, no defined coverage, no keeping up with the actual cost of private insurance ... and raising the retirement age for seniors is a huge deal to people with jobs that involve physical labor.

People used to work until they died.  Those were the bad old days.  I don't want to go back to them.

Kristopher, please tell me when I'll be able to quit working. (4.00 / 1)
I'm 26 years old. If cost projections are accurate, I would very likely be paying close to six figures out of pocket for my health insurance when I'm in my 60s under the Paul Ryan plan. I have been working since before I began college, but at no point during that time have I been in a position that provided me with a penny of pension contributions. My wife and I have a meager savings from her job's 401 (k), but even the most generous rate of return is not anticipated to keep up with the increase in medical costs. I think it's entirely possible that my wife and I with both be working full time until our deaths.

Only if the plutocrats succeed (0.00 / 0)
In either undoing all the social safety net programs put in place in the 20th century OR destroying the entire American economy.  They'd prefer option I, but option II is definitely on the table for them as a backdoor way to get to option I.

Work harder and work smarter!

I agree. (4.00 / 1)
Paul Ryan's Plan to Kill Medicare is a sh*t sandwich. I think we're well on our way to gradual decline toward mediocrity a la Japan in the 1990s and the cause is the exact same: an absolute total failure on the part of the political class to govern effectively.

Talking about what is actually being proposed... (4.00 / 1)
...is not a "scare tactic."  Failing to talk about it, however, is classified as "ignoring reality."

The Wall Street Journal, no liberal rag (0.00 / 0)

Said Paul Ryan's budget "would essentially end Medicare."

That's an alternate reality that needs some shouting about.

Work harder and work smarter!
