| In Montgomery. On the steps of the Alabama State Capitol. Marching up Dexter Avenue, past Dr. King's church, over the same ground civil rights marchers walked in 1965, will pass those who worship the past, whose heads are swiveled so far around on their shoulders to look backwards that it's a miracle they can march at all. It's the Sons of Confederate Veterans, re-enacting the inauguration of Jeff Davis. With the firing of a cannon, the raising of the Stars and Bars and the singing of Dixie, people in antebellum finery will come Saturday to re-enact a most divisive moment in U.S. history -- Jefferson Davis' inauguration 150 years ago as president of the Confederacy
How embarrassing for Alabama and especially for Montgomery! This re-enactment is about celebrating the institution of slavery, no matter what spin the organizers try to put on it. The NAACP plans to ignore these fools, which is probably the best idea. Fifty years ago the celebration in Montgomery lasted a week; this one is sure to be smaller and more pathetic. They'll march in their period outfits, fire off some cannons, then someone will read this speech and they'll congratulate themselves for doing exactly nothing to make America or Alabama a better place to live. Not a very compelling story. Still, I hope someone will go watch if only to report which of our elected officials appeared on the Capitol steps with the defenders of secession. |
