Environmental Tariffs to offset U.S. environmental control costs (4.00 / 1)

Apparently you have not heard my full remarks on this subject (made often by me in other forums but, due to time limitations imposed on our answers, I did not fully explain in this answer at the HASBAT forum).

I do now and have always supported strong pollution control laws.  Hence, in the GOP primary, I was attacked for my past membership in the Sierra Club.

When I said "level the playing field" to the HASBAT forum (on the video), I was referring to my other speeches (and beliefs) wherein  I advocated imposing tariffs on products made in foreign countries to the extent necessary to offset environmental control costs paid by American manufacturers.  These environmental control cost tariffs are the way to level the playing field.

 If we don't do that, China and other foreign nations will continue to put American manufacturers out of business . . . and Americans out of jobs.

 Thank you for taking the time to respond.

 China is kicking our butts in regards to alt energy because they mine 90-95% of the "rare earth" minerals that are needed to manufacture many of the green products. There is a large deposit of these minerals in Canada. We need to start digging now. (surely we can work something out with Canada)

 They are also kicking our butts because we are not doing the work. Let's get some solar strip factories up & running. We can make it so all we have to do is run down to Lowe's/Home Depot/etc... once every 20 years or so and buy a solar kit for the home. The jobs that will create and the low energy costs it would bring about would go a LONG way to improving our economy.  

 The trillion dollar band-aids that runaway global warming brings to the table would break the bank. 

 We have 5-6 years left to reach a worlwide agreement to keep from driving the car over the cliff. (because we have just waited too long) And of course if global warming is not curbed then you can kiss your plans to stop immigration goodbye. When they run out of water, they will ALL cross at the same time. At that point we have two choices. Let them through or kill them all. You know we're not going to kill them all.

 About a year ago I asked Parker Griffith to watch this film. I don't think he did. Will you (or someone on your staff) please watch it? It explains a lot.

Generally speaking, I believe in alternative energy forms.  However, they must be financially viable alternatives (i.e. - something people can afford), and, right now, too few are.

More R&D is needed (and UAH or UNA would be good places for that R&D) to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

Personally, I'd love solar panels (H2O heating or for electricity generation on my house) but they cost far more over the long haul in Huntsville Alabama than does conventional electricity or natural gas.

I am unconvinced about America's ability to do anything about Global Warming (assuming Global Warming is man-made and not a recurrent global weather pattern).  Yesterday I met with Dr. John Christy at UAH.  He's one sharp scientist who shares my skepticism.  Maybe in time enough data will be collected to suggest there is unnatural Global Warming and that humanity can change it . . . but right now there is too much conflicting data to warrant the financial costs of the action desired.

 We have gone 306 months in a row where the the world temp has been above average. A simple look at paleoclimate charts/graphs shows that has only happened, way back when the Earth had a warmer bedrock. (millions of years ago)

 The warmest nature can make earth now is at the peak of an interglacial. But even then, the world temp only goes above average for 3-4 months per year with 3-4 months per year of cooler than average temps. And it only affects half the planet.  And it also takes 1000 years to reach that peak. The current warming trend came about in just a few decades and it affects the entire planet. Nature just can't do that unless the sun becomes much, much hotter. And it's not the sun. If it were, all the American, Russian and Chinese satellites with solar radiance devices attached to them would very eaisly detect it.

 Anyone that tells you they are just not sure yet is just plain lying. (As Dr Christy is to you sir)

 I know the green products are too expensive right now. Mass production can fix that.

 Along with the things you mentioned Gayla are the results they have produced:

 Only now, after 30,000 years do the Inuit (and other polar dwellers) not have enough sea ice to protect them from storm surge.

 The larger cyclones. (hurricanes, typhoons)

 The larger and longer lasting tornados.

 The Russian drought-fires

 The Pakistan floods

 The Chinese floods & landslides

 The Europe heat wave

a "ding, ding, first time comment" welcome, but I realized that you've commented a couple of times before.

I apologize for the tardy welcome.

And I agree with the tariff suggestion, but no matter what the time limits at a debate/forum, you should make that point each time you even HINT that China is a positive role model for business practices.

Because they're the "fast and loose, wild west" kind of place that the US was when the Cuyahoga River caught fire, when Opton Sinclair exposed the meatpacking industry, etc. etc.  And look at the recent egg recall (we're so thrilled to get fresh eggs from our neighbors) where recent stricter regulations put in place AFTER the eggs were shipped might have caught the contamination before consumers found it - the hard way.

If you review my remarks carefully, not one time did I ever state that China is a role model for America on any of the items put in your original comment.  I disagree with China's "slave labor" practices.  I disagree with their pollution.  I disagree with their suppression of free speech and religion.  I disagree with their one-party rule by elitists.

About the only learning example we have from China is their experiment with Socialism.  It didn't work.  Recently China began moving away from Socialism to free enterprise and capitalism . . . and there economy and wealth have exploded.

It is the economic system that, to a very large degree, determines a nation's wealth.  China is moving to capitalism and generating more wealth. America is moving to socialism . . . and losing jobs and wealth and the ability to do what we all want done (but money is required to keep a clean environment, to take care of our elderly, to have a strong national defense, to educate our children, etc., etc.).

 I don't care if he's the president of the Sierra Club. Being against C&T means he just doesn't get it. Don't get me wrong, C&T is going to be rough on everybody at the onset. And then the gov is going to have to loan out some money to swap coal for wind, solar, hydro, nuclear (where applicable). Gas engines for electric engines. But the alternative (keeping things the way they are) would be a hundred times more expensive.

 It boils down to this, if your not for C&T (the first step) then you are proposing the largest tax hike in American history whether you realize it or not. Because the floods, droughts, longer lasting tornadoes, harder to combat fires, hurricanes, mass human & insect migration and disease that global warming brings to the table would become very expensive indeed.

One of the things that truly infuriated me was listening to an interview on Terry Gross' Fresh Air about how American chemical companies were allowed to use chemicals in baby toys sold in this country that the EU would not allow to be sold there.

The reason why? The chemical industry has a lobby in Washington that gives tons of money to Senators and Representatives, who in turn, allow this crap to ingested by our kids.

Thanks for the personal reply. However, I was speaking to American companies being allowed to sell products made with chemicals harmful to American kids, when they aren't allowed to sell them in other countries of the world.

Do have any thoughts about such practices and would you fight companies who seek to sell such products, regardless of their countries of origin?

To sum up all of the above...

Mo has the courage to take actual positions on issues.  Countrycat - eager to find something to attack Mo for - took a statement that was abbreviated due to the format and extrapolated it to something that was wholly inconsistent with Mo's position.  I suppose she could have asked for clarification before jumping to a conclusion merely for shock purposes.

Meanwhile, Raby is scared to take a firm position on anything.  What little he does say runs counter to the "progressive" mindset here, yet he gets a total pass because he has a D by his name.  Raby is Parker Griffith 2.0, folks.

As mentioned above, it is funny to see Mo attacked as an anti-environment whacko considering he was attacked as an environmentalist whacko in the primary.

 Raby has scored a full point when he signed the pledge to keep Social Security. 

 Bonus questions for Commissioner Brooks if he returns : Nancy Pelosi is out and the GOP wins big in November. What does Mo Brooks do then? Energy? (I would like specifics) Immigration (please be VERY specific) Jobs? (name some companies, products or services that would result in jobs that can be depended on)

You asked, I'll answer (but I can't do it every time because I have so much work/campaigning to do).

During the primary campaign, I often disagreed with those who want to abolish the EPA.  If you listen to the Will Anderson Show, you'll  hear him say that his biggest criticism of me is that I would not vote to abolish the EPA (Will favors ablishing the EPA).

Quite frankly, the EPA was established because state's lacked the backbone to protect our environment.  The inducement of "jobs here if you let us pollute, jobs across the state line if you don't let us pollute" (often coupled with large campaign contribution incentives) was too much for state officials to resist.

Hence, the need for the EPA.

The above argument is of course abbreviated (much more could be said), but I've always believed we must have an EPA . . . and that it is expressly permitted by the Constitution's Commerce Clause.

 They recognize the extreme danger that global warming brings to the table. Do you trust them or do you trust Dr  John Christy and Dr Roy Spencer? (both at UAH) Just recently they were saying the Earth had been cooling for 10 straight years. (and anybody with half a brain knows that's just not possible)

I've watched and listened to Mo for a lot of years.  We first met in 1984 in Democratic HQ.  He showed me his Sierra Club membership club (I really had to snicker during the primary when that membership was considered a campaign issue in the GOP primary).

Unfortunately, the "abbreviated" statement seemed to me to be wholly in keeping with some of his more off the wall positions.  Mo is a bright, engaging guy and I like him personally.  He seems like a good sport with a sense of humor. That doesn't mean I plan to vote for him.  There are a LOT of people I like personally who I don't think belong in Congress, school board, or even next door....

However, from my perspective Mo has either really gone over the edge with this "Socialism" stuff or he's riding the Socialist horse for political gain. Neither option is attractive.

dragontide, continue your relentless fight aGAinst monstrous odds (until it all hits at once and they all become believers). Mo has a good position on environment. but another big issue is taxes -- is he for the right position -- take the bush engineered tax breaks off the little guy and continue them on those earning upper level salaries? making hedge fund managers pay on their income as income, not at 15 percent capital gains? that's a good start on reducing the deficit.

that d after steve's name is significant. it means that he is running as a member of a party with a variety of views on major issues, but it symbolizes that his basic interest is the people  -- what's best for the people generally. parker bore the d honorably for the most part as a state senator. when he got to congress his innate stupidity took over. I'd bet if you hooked him up to a truth machine he was for helping the lily ledbetters of the working world, he was for legislation so that we would have a health care system that didn't rank below taiwan's. he was just too dumb to go ahead with what he knew was right. steve is smart as well as for a lot of the right things.

There is more than one way to level the playing field (0.00 / 0)

between the USA and China. One way, which some people assume Brooks means, is to have fewer or less stringent regulations on American companies. Another way would be to work to see that businesses in China must conform to the same regulations and restrictions that American businesses do. Mr. Brooks' suggestion of tariffs on imported products could be another way. Perhaps a combination of the last two ways I just mentioned might constitute a fourth and better way.
