More Shelby Pork -- To Employers of His Former Staff

Fat Cat ShelbyPolitico "breaks" the "news" that Pork King Richard Shelby is directing vast sums of taxpayer dollars to those who hire his former staffers as lobbyists. Just since 2008, Shelby has directed $250 million in earmarks to entities that employed lobbyists who used to work in his Senate office.  Coincidentally (or not!) lobbyists and employees of those earmark benificiaries have contributed nearly a million dollars to Shelby.  That doesn't look like much return on investment for Shelby, but remember, the $250 million isn't his money -- it's yours and mine.

Sen. Shelby, like Rep. Murtha before him, takes trading earmarks for campaign dollars to a level most members of Congress can only dream about,” said Melanie Sloan, executive director of the organization [Center for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington]. “Also like Murtha, Shelby earmarks for the benefit of his former-staffers-turned-lobbyists.”

...

Shelby’s earmarking doesn’t appear to run afoul of Senate rules or federal ethics laws. But critics said his tactics are part of a Washington culture in which lawmakers direct money back home to narrow interests, which, in turn, hire well-connected lobbyists — often former congressional aides — who enjoy special access on Capitol Hill.

“It is a system that is in direct conflict of interest with our oath of office because it’s parochial,” said Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), an earmark critic who declined to comment on Shelby directly.

This is not new "news" to anyone who watches Shelby's actions -- he is proud of his ability to bring millions in earmarks to the state and his fundraising is simply obscene -- but you will look long and hard to find any articles like this one in the Alabama press.  Why is that?

A Hill insider familiar with Shelby’s earmarking said that the senator is “looked at like Robin Hood in northern Alabama,” especially in the Huntsville region, with its growing military and space industries. “The people there genuinely feel like they’ve been victims of federal policies. Shelby is helping them get even.”

We get about $1.30 back for every dollar we pay in federal taxes, and still think we're being victimized by the feds.  And Richard Shelby equals Robin Hood.  What is wrong with this picture?

Mo Brooks is wrong with this picture (4.00 / 1)
He and the DeMint crowd are what's wrong with America.

Come join us; you can be a winner too!

Robin Hood? (4.00 / 2)
More like Dillinger I'd say. Killing countless people with global warming and fake wars, just to keep the cash flowing. Richard Shelby should be wearing a black & white striped jumper suit and breaking rocks in the hot sun. Along with his Merry Men cronies!

July 2010 was the 14th consecutive July with sea ice extent below average. July 1996 was the last year that had above-average sea ice extent. N.S.I.D.C.

According to the Tax Foundation, in 2005 we received $1.66 for every tax dollar we send to Washington.

Socialism, I say. Socialism! (4.00 / 1)

and the worst part of this diary... (4.00 / 2)
is the part about Alabama media ignoring the whole story.

Actually (4.00 / 2)
Last night on WBRC "FOX6" in Birmingham aired a story about this from Politico and even called Shelby's office about it.  This is interesting considering Birmingham's ABC affiliate, "ABC 33/40" is owned by the same parent company of Politico, Allbritton Communications, and didn't say NOTHING about this story.

Oh yeah, (4.00 / 2)
WBRC "FOX6" also mentioned that William Barnes is running against Shelby in November and showed a poll between the two with Shelby at 59% and Barnes at 39%.

Since Barnes hasn't been advertising (4.00 / 1)

That says to me that 40% of Alabamians want an alternative to Shelby.  And maybe some of the rest are soft supporters.  We need to exploit that dissatisfaction.

Democrats in Alabama have been content to let Shelby (and now Sessions) get a free pass every 6 years in large part because they are bringing home the bacon.  The problem with that from the Democratic point of view is that they are Republicans bringing home that bacon.  Not only does the credit go to the other party, the spoils also go to the supporters of the other party.  A two party system where one party rolls over and plays dead is an extremely unhealthy system.

There was also a very small mention (4.00 / 1)

In this morning's Mobile Press-Register, but the Alabama media typically fawns over Shelby's pork.  They've apparently all bought into the "reparations" meme and applaud the Pork King for bringing home all the bacon he can lay hands on.

And honestly, I can understand the impulse to get everything that's going for Alabama, but the hypocrisy of then whining about deficit spending and socialism and the ruination of the country is just too much to stomach.

The entire Old South is a welfare state, probably because we were so far behind the rest of the country at the beginning of the last century.  We've been dependent on the charity of better managed states for decades.  When are we going to learn to manage our resources skilfully enough to blossom into full partnership with the rest of America?

Work harder and work smarter!

Interesting that the elected representatives of the Old South (4.00 / 1)
reject the argument that Blacks are at a disadvantage because of things that were done to their ancestors, but accept the fiction that the Southern states deserve Federal welfare because of Reconstruction.

Par for the course, I'm afraid (4.00 / 1)
The Alabama media is laid back to the point of being comatose when it comes to criticizing the powerful.

Work harder and work smarter!

Yeah... (4.00 / 2)
They don't want to miss the lunch invites.

Money may be the Mother's milk of politics, but it is the arsenic of Democracy.

Is that a conflict of interest, or what? (4.00 / 1)

Big Time!

You do have to applaud Senator Shelby (4.00 / 1)

You do have to applaud Senator Shelby: he convinces Alabamans to vote against their interests and for the interests of his rich friends.

I don't really know if that is easy or difficult.

I have begun to suspect - not the intelligence - the way their intelligence works.

It's their atavistic naive, simplistic, superstitions of religion, politics, and experience.

They may be stupid.

I will try again to write clearly, honestly, and simply enough to convince them to vote for their own interests.

Qui bibit, dormit; qui dormit, non peccat; qui non peccat, sanctus est; ergo qui bibit sanctus est.

Poor and middle-class Whites, actually buying the Bu**-S**t (0.00 / 0)
that their natural alliance is with White millionaires, rather than poor and middle-class Blacks and Hispanics. As long as they buy into this self-defeating fiction, the GOP will be around, shuckin' and jivin' to their hearts' content.

A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
