Terri Sewell: "It's an historic election because it's about you, not about me"

by: mooncat

Mon Jul 12, 2010 at 13:58:06 PM CDT

Terri Sewell is working hard to make history as the first African-American woman elected to Congress from Alabama, but her constant theme in a packed town hall meeting at Birmingham's West End Library Thursday evening was that this election is about representing the people of Alabama's 7th district above all else.

She stressed the need for job creation and economic development in the district, touted her experience, leadership and good character and pledged to be an honest, effective voice on behalf of the 7th congressional district.

"I just want to say I know who I am and whose I am.  And if you send me to Congress, I will take those same values of faith, personal responsibility, hard work to Washington and roll up my sleeves and work on behalf of you each and every day.  It's about remembering who elected you.  It's about remembering why you're there: to represent the people.

...

If you honor me with your vote, I will serve you with honor. ... You won't be embarrassed by anything I say or do."

Time and again she told the crowd she would always put the interests of the seventh congressional district first and foremost, even ahead of partisan politics or President Obama's priorities should the two ever conflict.

Terri Sewell is progressive on the issues and still putting economic priorities at the top of her list.

"The issues are about creating jobs, better schools, improving our infrastructure, helping our senior citizens, making sure we have Medicaid and Medicare ... that's what it's about. ... We have to make sure healthcare is accessible for everybody."

Sewell, daughter of Selma's first African-American city councilwoman, noted that she had interviewed Shirley Chisolm for her thesis "Black Women in Politics: Our Time has Come" back in the 1980's.  She quoted Chisolm on public service:

"Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth."

... and said, "I'm asking you on July 13th to let me make a small deposit toward that rent.  You will not, you will not, be sorry."

mooncat :: Terri Sewell: "It's an historic election because it's about you, not about me"

The first question from the audience was actually a statement about the attack ads being run by Sewell's opponent.  A woman stood up and told Sewell that anytime you try to do something good you should expect to be attacked and said "Keep on going on, baby, because we're behind you."  Sewell said she believes the negativity is an attempt to distract voters from the issues that ought to be front and center in this election, but declared that she intends to fight back

"This election is way too important for us to get this choice wrong, so I want you to know that I can't fight for you if I'm not willing to fight for me.  The issues are about creating jobs, better schools, improving our infrastructure, helping our senior citizens, making sure we have Medicaid and Medicare ... that's what it's about."

Several members of the audience said they were community activists or organizers.  Two women stood up and thanked Sewell for coming to their neighborhoods to do door to door canvassing.  I spoke with both women after the meeting; one lives in Fairview and the other lives a few blocks from the West End Library.  They both said they called Sewell and asked her to come to their neighborhoods and were very pleased that she came and knocked on doors with them -- I got the impression that few candidates do door-to-door campaigning in these women's neighborhoods.  These stories fit with what Sewell has told me before, that knocking on doors and talking directly to voters is what she most enjoys about the campaign.

Terri Sewell's non-designer shoeIt's odd that Sewell, who regularly visits community centers, senior centers, apartment complexes and nursing homes to take her message to the people, is being painted as an elitist by her opponents.  Some have even alleged that she wears designer shoes.  That irony is not lost on Terri Sewell.  When I saw her in Huntsville a few weeks ago she literally pulled off her shoe, held it up to me and said, "See?  Nine West.  These are not designer shoes."

Sure enough, they were Nine West black pumps (photo at right) although the label was so worn I could barely make it out.  Those non-designer shoes have carried Terri Sewell and her pro-jobs, pro-economic development, pro-health care, pro-education, pro-choice, pro-fair pay, pro-financial reform, pro-people message a lot of miles in the sixteen and a half months she's been on the campaign trail.  Tomorrow those black pumps have a chance to carry Terri Sewell over the single biggest hurdle on the path to becoming Alabama's first elected black Congresswoman -- securing the Democratic nomination in a runoff with Jefferson County Commissioner Shelia Smoot.

Polls are open from 7 am to 7 pm on Tuesday, July 13th.

Joe Openshaw also covered Sewell's Birmingham town hall meeting.  Read Terri Sewell: the honest candidate here.

What expericence? (0.00 / 0)

What leadership?

She stressed the need for job creation but what's her PLAN for job creation in the 7th district?

If you honor me with your vote, I will serve you with honor. ... You won't be embarrassed by anything I say or do."

Redeye's translation:  If you honor me with your vote I will go along to get along...and be quiet like a good girl.  I will do what I'm told to do by my puppet masters.

Been there, done this;

Time and again she told the crowd she would always put the interests of the seventh congressional district first and foremost, even ahead of partisan politics or President Obama's priorities should the two ever conflict.

*We see how well that worked out for the residents of the 7th district don't we?

I guess it depends on what the definition of an attack IS and what is Terri Sewell is trying to DO.  Terri has attack blogs.

ROFLOL @ this!

It's odd that Sewell, who regularly visits community centers, senior centers, apartment complexes and nursing homes to take her message to the people, is being painted as an elitist by her opponents.  Some have even alleged that she wears designer shoes.  That irony is not lost on Terri Sewell.  When I saw her in Huntsville a few weeks ago she literally pulled off her shoe, held it up to me and said, "See?  Nine West.  These are not designer shoes."

*She wore designer shoes BEFORE she wore Nine West.  Check her walk in closets.

Terri Sewell is fighting to become the first African American female representative in Congress from Alabama. Woo hoo.  Is Terri Sewell fighting to become the first African American female member of Congress from Alabama just so she can say she's the first African American female member of Congress from Alabama?  What has she done to earn the privilege of being elected the first African American female member of Congress from Alabama?  What experience?  What leadership?  It all sounds pretty but what does it mean?

Not a darn thing.  All style.  No substance.

The residents of the 7th district deserve better.  They deserve a representative with proven experience and a record of leadership.  Not someone who came out of no where and decided they wanted to be the first African American female member of Congress from Alabama for show.

No offense to Joe the Openshaw but I agree with PubliusIX

my gut instinct is that Smoot would be a more loyal member of both the Democratic majority, and the Congressional Black Caucus, and would thus serve her constituents better.

Sorry Joe. :)

Hypocrisy (4.00 / 2)

You villified Artur Davis because he didn't vote the interests/wishes of his district on health care, now you try to villify Terri Sewell when she pledges to vote the interests and wishes of 7th district residents no matter what, even if Nancy Pelosi or President Obama lean on her to vote the other way?  Admit it, you just don't like her and will say anything to rationalize your preference for Smoot.

As for Shelia Smoot's proven record, I refer you to her shameful votes related to the Jefferson County sewer bond refinancings and swaps that have all but bankrupted that county, forced massive increases in sewer rates, job cuts and pay cuts for county employees and service cutbacks for residents.  I've heard of rising to your level of incompetence, but with a record like that, surely she doesn't deserve a promotion.

I'm not villifying anyone personally mooncat (0.00 / 0)

I am criticizing their votes/actions/policies as I have the RIGHT to do.

Sheila Smoot is not soley responsible for bankrupting Jefferson County, anymore than she is responsible for the down turn in the economy in general. Thanks to Bush's tax cut for the rich, which was actually a tax shift from the rich who could afford to pay more to the middle class who couldn't afford to pay more, cities and counties all over the country had to raise taxes, cut services, lay off workers etc.

It's not about me "liking Terri Sewell" because it's not about her and it's not about ME.  This is not a personality contest.  This is about policies that affect real peoples lives.  For the record, I like Terri Sewell as a person, but that doesn't mean she should be elected to Congress.

Smoot and the JeffCo Comm. are responsible (4.00 / 3)

"Sheila Smoot is not soley responsible for bankrupting Jefferson County, anymore than she is responsible for the down turn in the economy in general."

Let me get this straight. You blame Bush, who, along with 535 legislators, was in charge of running the country, for the economic crisis. Fair enough. But then you don't blame Shelia Smoot, who, along with 4 other commissioners, was in charge of running the county, for JeffCo going billions into debt? Especially when it's well-known that her votes (which were allegedly corruptly influenced) for these faulty deals led directly to the county defaulting.

I understand that you are saying the overall economy, which was out of her control, played a role--and I'll grant you that it did, but only a minor role. There are tens of thousands of municipal governments in the U.S. however that didn't face financial crisis even with the down economy. Clearly county leaders played a leading role in the county's problems.

[ Parent ]
You're darn skippy I blame Bush's policies for driving the country (0.00 / 0)

into the ditch.  I blame Bush's mis-administration and the republican and dem  congress  coward critters who enabled him.

And NO I don't blame Sheila Smoot for Bush and Dick's mess.  Sheila Smoot is just ONE county leader, she's not the ONLY county leader.

Bush raided the surplus to give his rich tax cronies a tax cut.  Blame Sheila Smoot.

Not.

[ Parent ]
you are missing the point (4.00 / 3)

No one is blaming Smoot for ruining the economy.

Most blame Smoot and the county commission for making a series of irresponsible votes that directly led to the county taking on billions in debt.

[ Parent ]
Guilt by association (0.00 / 0)

Funny how you want to hold Smoot responsible for the actions of the entire Jefferson County Commission.

Smoot brings with her the baggage of being a member of the Jefferson County Commission, one of the most dysfunctional local governments in America. Even if hers is only guilt by association, being lumped with the indictments, convictions, bond defaults, bankruptcy threats, and litigation beyond measure, would give Mother Teresa an image problem. Smoot has passed on opportunity after opportunity on that Commission to exercise the sort of leadership that would truly make her stand out as a candidate for higher office. It's difficult to be too hard on her, as any systemic reform requires two other votes, but at least some advocacy of tougher measures would have been nice.

I still believe Sheila Smoot will be a more effective representative for the 7th district despite this issue.  The residents in the 7th district have pressing, immediate problems.

Yeah, Smoot will be more effective at embarassing us in Congress (4.00 / 1)
She's already done that as Jefferson County commisisoner.  You would know that if had followed her history as the 2nd district commissioner (my district), and how her key vote has always been in favor of the wrong decisions over the right one.  She's fighting for her employment since she knows she doesn't have an iceberg chance in he!! of getting reelected as a county commissioner after the furloughs and essential shutdown of the county government.  Also her refusal to cut her own personal salary when county employees were laid off or furloughed as well as the closure of all the countyhouse annexes leding to the long lines there didn't help either.  Sounds more like an individual looking out for their resume and money flow rather than the individual citizens in the Jefferson County or the 7th congressional district.

I'm sorry, but when did law firms become publicly funded entities? (4.00 / 1)

If happens then we can talk.  FYI, since you don't realize the senior partners of law firms make those decisions, and last time I remember (as the friend that works at Maynard, Cooper, & Gale has informed me), Sewell wasn't a senior partner.   Otherwise, her name would have been in title of the firm like the addition of Fournier J. Gale, III's name was a few years back.

Meanwhile, it seems that Jefferson County Commission is publicly funded entity since it is the county government.  Smoot is a commissioner there, so my point stands...

You weren't in the audience Thursday so I know you have no idea what Terri Sewell said, but you obviously feel free to twist my words.  She unequivocally said her first priority would be the needs and wishes of the 7th congressional district.  When pressed, she said even the President could not convince her to vote against the interest of her district.  Nor could partisan politics.  That's a very strong statement of loyalty to the voters who elect a representative.  Under normal circumstances you would praise a representative who vowed to actually represent We the People, but for some reason you are now looking for reasons to criticize it.

I need hip boots for the hypocrisy you are peddling.

Terri Sewell is talking about issues (4.00 / 1)

She's been talking about issues since day one of her campaign.  We aren't going to have more progressive government as long as we let candidates get by with distracting voters from real issues, like the economy, fair pay and reform.  Up until recently (when Smoot's attacks started) Sewell's advertising has all been positive -- she's running on who she is and what she wants to do.

Shelia Smoot's negative ads are full of misstatements and innuendo.  They are either a comedy of errors or the most blatant attempt ever to coat an opponent with manufactured mud.  There's a new mail piece that fits right into the comedy of errors mold.  It attempts to smear Sewell's record by highlighting her time as a corporate lawyer -- guilt by association, you know?  Unfortunately, the mailer (inadvertently?) highlights a Birmingham Business Journal article about Terri Sewell's “Rising Star Award” which says she has "answered the call" since returning home to Alabama.

You have to question the competence of people who put together a smear piece like that.  They also cite Wikipedia in that mailer as well as an article (wrong timeframe, of course) from the legal "news and gossip" blog abovethelaw.com.  Great sourcing for the mud, guys.  Unfortunately, there's nothing in that mailer or the radio ads that says where Shelia Smoot stands on any real issue.

Record of excellence (4.00 / 3)

Redeye, if you haven't read Terri Sewell's bio, you can do so here.

You obviously are hung up on the fact that Terri Sewell has never held elected office before, while Shelia Smoot has. To that concern, I have three responses.

First, this whole, "experience is better" refrain has long since been tired and worn out. People said the same thing about Obama when he was running. His couldn't find anything bad to say about him, so they attacked him for not being a politician long enough. Believing that being a politician for a longer time alone makes you a better candidate for office is an opinion you are certainly entitled to hold, but it's one that I and many others disagree with.

Second,  even if you do hold this opinion, it counts as to what type of record we are talking about. Shelia Smoot's record in her only job as an elected official includes being singled out for corruption and nearly bankrupting the largest municipal government in the state of Alabama

Third, if you are concerned that perhaps you aren't as sure how Terri Sewell will vote on issues in Congress, I would point out the fact that Terri Sewell has gone on the record countless times over a wide variety of issues over the course of her nearly two years campaigning. For a great run-down of how she will vote as a Congresswoman, see this piece from right here at LiA.

[ Parent ]
What record of excellence? (0.00 / 0)

Record of excellence in WHAT?  And yes I'm hung up on the fact Terri Sewell has not held elected office before.  I'm surprised you aren't concerned that an inexperienced Wall Street Attorney with a huge war chest is running for Congress as a democrat.

Terri Sewell is NOT President Obama.  Not even close.  President Obama had a proven track record as one of them there community organizers before he was elected State Senator (on the second try), then elected United States Senator, then elected President of the United States.  He didn't start at the top and work his way down, he started at the bottom and worked his way up.  He gained experience.  He had street creeds.  Comparing their record and experience is like comparing apples to oranges.

Yes, I'm concerned how Terri Sewell will vote on the issues IF she is elected to Congress.  Who is she going to be beholden too, the voters or her deep pocket contributors?

what message are you sending? (4.00 / 2)

Her "deep pocket contributors" are long-time friends she made in her days away at school and working in New York. 95% of Sewell's contributions have come from individuals. Only 5% from special interest PACs. 22% of Smoot's money has come from special interest PACs.

You and the Smoot campaign you have championed online for so long are using the one big weapon you have left: the message that Terri Sewell is "not one of us" because she dared to attend prestigious schools out of state and even dared to earn some money working for law firms. Clearly, these are signs of success for anyone, but you and the Smoot campaign, sadly, are trying to make them into negatives.

What are we to tell our children attending public schools in Alabama today, as Terri Sewell did decades ago? Whatever you do, don't aspire to make such good grades that you can go to Princeton and Harvard. And for god's sake, don't ever grow up to be in a position to make money.

Really? Is this the message you want to send?

All spin all the time BamaDem (0.00 / 0)

The only one talking about Terri's academic background is Y-O-U.

95% of Terri Sewells contributions came from rich individuals.  Special interest PACs as you call them are groups of individuals who pool their resources because they don't have deep pockets.  Terri doesn't need special interest PACs when she has deep pocket contributors, I mean individuals from college and work in New York.

I have never said nor will I ever say Terri Sewell is not one of us because she dared to attend pretigious schools out of statt and even dared earn some money working for law firms.  Those are YOUR words not mine.

I'm saying Terri Sewell has no experience in government.  No record of community or public service.   No record of community, government leadership.

umm...no (4.00 / 1)

"Special interest PACs as you call them are groups of individuals who pool their resources because they don't have deep pockets"

Here are some of Smoot's PAC donations that a quick glance at her forms reveals:

National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors PAC: $1,000

Alabama Power Company PAC: $6,500

Drummond Coal Company PAC: $7,500

JPAC (mysterious non-federal PAC): $1,000

Energen Corporation PAC: $2,000

Alabama Aircraft Industries, Inc PAC: $2,000

Right there, that's almost 15% of Smoot's total money. And that's just a glance, not a full study. Alabama Power? Drummond Coal? Insurance and Financial Advisors?

Your ignorance becomes more and more obvious each time you post.

[ Parent ]
Let's see (4.00 / 2)

Drummond, Energen, and Alabama Power are all major companies/subidiaries headquartered in Birmingham yet doesn't offer any type of outreach to the community in any form.  Also they all run by individuals that doesn't give a flip about the well-being of the City of Birmingham as long as it doesn't affect their coffers.  Alabama Power, APCO, that's the main polluter of the air we breathe in Greater Birmingham with their refusal to change over to more clean and efficient forms of energy generation aside from coal burning.  They are also one of the main reasons why Birmingham still has frequent air quality violations in accordance to EPA regulations. Also APCO, Drummond, and some 30 other large land owners in Jefferson County created a local PAC that essentially guaranteed the dissolving of the Stormwater Authority of Jefferson County (SWMA) after getting all the county commissioners (including Smoot) to withdrawal from the membership in 2008.  FYI, SWMA was formed in the 1990s after the EPA stormwater debacle to prevent future development from violating the federal guidelines. Thus, it one of the reasons why Jefferson County is back under investigation of the Justice Department for the stormwater and sewer facilities.

Yeah, Shelia Smoot is on your side, the sides of political action committes of corporate fat cats that haven't done anything productive for Birmingham at all...

to the race.

But I'm a great admirer of Joe Openshaw's work in the community in Bessemer and his political acuity.  He's somebody who looks the situation over carefully and usually pretty dispassionately before making a decision.

His support of Terri Sewell carries weight with me because I respect him so much.   I think that's called the "friends and family" effect.  The Houston Chronicle wrote about it a couple of years ago in the context of social networking sites:

Unlike a newspaper article or television broadcast, the information presented on sites like Facebook and MySpace is filtered through a user’s circle of friends and acquaintances. “They may trust those people more than they would a media organization or a campaign,” Mr. Haridakis said.

Although online social networking is a new research topic, previous research has provided the framework for studying how the media affects voting behavior. A 1940s study by sociologists Paul Lazarsfeld and Elihu Katz found that interpersonal communication among friends and family members has far more of an influence on voting behavior than the media does. Moreover, the sociologists’ findings indicated that the few people who did consult the media for political information acted as “opinion leaders” and disseminated their views to everyone else.

I know that before the primary, I had friends and relatives call and email me for my opinions on the candidates - which I happily provided and they were able to use as either a positive or negative guide :-).

And so I see the same effect here.  Someone that I like and respect, who lives in the district, and is familiar with the players is supporting Sewell.  And the video and information I've seen on her seems to back them up.

When I saw the District 7 candidates speak in person before the primary, I was most impressed by Sewell and Hilliard, but found Shelia Smoot less than impressive. I don't like being yelled at and Smoot did a lot of shouting.

I was really surprised when the runoff wasn't between Hilliard and Sewell.

Should be exciting tomorrow!
