AL-07: Terri Sewell's Ad - "Truth" - Pushes Back on Lies

by: mooncat

Sun Jul 11, 2010 at 09:07:58 AM CDT

Terri Sewell's new ad, "Truth":

This ad responds directly to Smoot's "Let them eat steak" radio ad (also debunked here) and I think the two are running on some of the same radio stations.  We've noted elsewhere that Shelia Smoot's ads are short on facts and long on negativity -- I've listened to the ones she's sent out on Facebook and they're entirely negative, no mention at all of Smoot's qualifications, plans to create jobs, reduce poverty or improve infrastructure in Alabama's 7th congressional district, just accusations about her opponent.  When you have nothing positive to run on, it's all about tearing down the other side.

In contrast, Terri Sewell's media advertising has been all positive to this point and I hear that her positive ads are still running in the district.  But positive campaign or no, when you're attacked, you'd better hit back with the truth or people will believe the lies.

This question of attending Republican meetings (as alleged in the Smoot ad) came up at Sewell's town hall meeting in Birmingham Thursday evening, asked by a woman who said she had several questions she got off the internet.  Sewell said:

"I am a strong Democrat and I have been all my life. ... I am a Democrat and I am not going to go to Congress and switch parties, and I know who I am and whose I am."

The lady who asked the question thanked Sewell and said she would email that response around.  Video of the interchange is below the fold.

Terry Sewell denies ever having attended an Alabama Federation of Republican Women meeting at a town hall in Birmingham on July 8, 2010.

We've all heard that negative ads work (0.00 / 0)
But I wonder if exclusively negative ads will work for Smoot, especially when the negative charges are so easily debunked.  Some of the women I spoke to outside the town hall believed the attacks on Sewell were a sign her opponent is desperate -- not a good meme for Smoot.

Work harder and work smarter!

exclusively negative? (0.00 / 0)
that's only what you are talking about.

[ Parent ]
Where are the positive ones? (0.00 / 0)
Smoot isn't sending those out to her supporters and Facebook friends.  And I hear she just sent out a rather ugly mail piece, too.

Work harder and work smarter!

[ Parent ]
Why should Sewll pay to for negative ads, (0.00 / 1)

when she gets them for free a left in Alabama?

Again, this is a gop style weapon of mass distraction from the real issue.  Terri Sewell has no record and no street creds to run on, but she has a boat load of money and mainstream media and neo liberal blog  endorsements and support.  Why?

Think about it.

"Street creds"??? LOL (0.00 / 0)

Uh, it's "street cred" no "s" on the "cred".  You are so out of touch with the vernacular of the youth that is funny.  Please for future usage don't use the phrase "street creds",  LMAO!!!!!

Anyways, I believe you are talking about the wrong candidate that is what Shelia "Snooty Booty" Smoot has been doing since April.  Usage of "rhetorical of mass distraction" while offering us the constituency any incite on her plans or platform as a congresswoman.

Big checks - lol (0.00 / 0)
Eighty thousand dollars for a single mom is a lot of money?

Who was making millions on Wall Street?

The Birmingham News is finally paying a little attention (0.00 / 0)

There's a story on the Sewell/Smoot race by Thomas Spencer in this morning's edition.

Stressing the need for further health care reforms, including a public option insurance plan, Sewell said she would support President Barack Obama's agenda in Congress. "The president needs a partner," Sewell told a crowd this week at a town hall meeting at the West End branch of the Birmingham Public Library.

Her opponent, Smoot, is running on her "Smoot On your Side" slogan, hearkening back to her days as a television news reporter who worked on a consumer advocacy segment. She hopes her name identification and record in Jefferson County will help her add to the 29 percent of the vote she got in the primary, by picking up the 22 percent of voters who went with Earl Hilliard Jr. She's also trying to turn Sewell's massive fundraising advantage into a negative.

It's beyond me how Shelia Smoot's record in Jefferson county could possibly be turned into anything positive.

Work harder and work smarter!

if Sewell is so close to the Obama's? (0.00 / 0)
why have they not done anything on her behalf?

a letter, ad, appearance?

we know that Rahmbo is not afraid to push his weight around when it comes to primaries.

[ Parent ]
Well,,, I don't see Obama intevening in a primary (4.00 / 1)

or at least I don't think he should, though perhaps he has in the past.

That seems to me to be out of bounds, but that's just my opinion.  Has it been going on in other races?  I've been pretty focused on Alabama the past few months and have been out of touch with national stuff.

There are no "safe" Republican districts. You can run but you can't hide.  - Rahm Emmanuel

[ Parent ]
he definitely has in the past (0.00 / 0)
GA-12 comes to mind when Blue Dog John Barrow was on the ropes in 2008 when Obama was just the nominee.

Specter and Lincoln this year are two others.

Now I'm sure that someone will point out that those are not open seats that it was about protecting the incumbent.

However, when you name drop like Sewell does I think it would have been beneficial to have it backed up with something. Just a thought.

[ Parent ]
Well yes, those are incumbents (0.00 / 0)
And it certainly does matter.  I don't think you'll see many sitting presidents intervening in primaries for open seats, certainly not Obama.  Bigfooting like that is not only inappropriate, but likely ineffective.

Work harder and work smarter!

[ Parent ]
didn't the DCCC bigfoot in Hawaii? (0.00 / 0)
which definitely has Rahmbo's prints all over it.

[ Parent ]
or did they just get Emily (0.00 / 0)
to do all of the work on this one?

[ Parent ]
I hate to see you so determined to trash Emily's List (0.00 / 0)
... just because they didn't pick your candidate.  Face it, picking Sheila Smoot with her sewer bond background would have been malpractice on the part of any advocacy group.

Work harder and work smarter!

[ Parent ]
I've been all over Emily (0.00 / 0)
way before this. Nikki Tinker thank you very much. Martha Coakley thank you very much.

Its just a blog (4.00 / 1)
LIA is just a blog and not a political think tank.  You give it much too much credit.  It is what it is.

[ Parent ]
I don't know (4.00 / 1)
But you were talking about President Obama, how did the DCCC get into the conversation.  Talking to you is like whack-a-mole these days -- you're always bringing up something different, perhaps because you can't win any argument on the merits.

Work harder and work smarter!

[ Parent ]
What's that you say? (0.00 / 1)

The Birmingham Noose, I mean News, supports Terri Sewell who has done NOTHING for the people of Birmingham or the 7th district over Sheila Smoot Sewell who has a record of standing up for the masses and fighting for the people?  I'm shocked!  Shocked I tell you.

Not.

The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die.~Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D. MA)

[ Parent ]
Uh, so am I, but (0.00 / 0)

You don't live in the 7th district or Jefferson County, so you only know what you via hearsay.  If you lived in her district, 2nd district of Jeffco, then you would know about her always being a beacon of craziness like her former colleagues, Larry Langford, Gary White, and Mary Buckelew.  Two words come to mind when it relates to any of them "bond swap".  I work, live, and vote (in Jeffco's 2nd district & AL-07), so I have ground truth to goes on here.

I'm surprised you think you know, but until your residence is in Jeffco or can substanitate your evidence about anybody's track history (something others have done consistently).

Otherwise, don't run off on random tangents without proof b/c it looks and sounds foolish... ;)

We sure know how to get it wrong (4.00 / 2)

We sure did get it wrong when we left Michel Nicrosi and Earl Hilliard out of this equation.... and like Forrest Gump says, "That's all I gotta say about that!"

Michel was a long shot (0.00 / 0)
New to politics and running statewide for the first time.  But I was shocked that Earl Hilliard, Jr. finished behind Smoot on June 1.  Did he make some glaring error, or what?  He had relevant experience and no ethics baggage as far as I ever heard and I was sure he'd be in the top two.

Work harder and work smarter!

New to politics? (0.00 / 0)

Using that same argument, Terri Sewell is as stated above "New to politics and running statewide for the first time. "

A Congresional district is not statewide (0.00 / 0)

Earl Hilliard Jr. had sins of the father baggage (0.00 / 0)

Which is why republicans want Terri Sewell to represent the 7th district

Hillard Jr. and Smoot are proud liberals.  Terri Sewell is a progressive.  There is a difference.  The residents of the 7th district need, strike that, deserve liberal representation in Congress.

It's about time... (4.00 / 1)
The lies and half-truths should've been exposed the moment the were claimed.

This is an election for the people that ACTUALLY live in the district (4.00 / 1)
This is truly an election for the people that actually live in congressional district 7 and for people that can actually VOTE in the district.  The problem is that way too many people and organizations are trying to influence it for the wrong reasons (I'm sure that many consider this subjective but it is really not).  People that do not live in the district can give high level spin for candidates, write flashy blog posts, post misinformation about candidates, put up radio ads, act as tools of outside interest but in the end it is about the people that vote.  It will be about the people who's everyday life is affected by their congressional representation.

It is morally wrong for people that do not live in the district to try to influence votes, however, its a free country and free speech reigns.  As supporters of constitution reform, we all know the dangers of being able to vote for issues that do not affect us (e.g. why do I ned to vote on sheep herding, shrimp farming etc.. in other parts of the state).

At the end of the day, the people that actually live and vote in the district will select their choice of the candidate that they trust, has a record of experience, and the one that will do the right thing.  Fortunately enough, very few on this blog will have the opportunity to do so.

Interesting point of view (1.00 / 1)

Especially coming from someone blogging from Madison, Alabama - well outside AL-07.

As I've asked before, are you quite sure you don't have another username (i.e.: sockpuppet) here?

Voters are all that matters. (0.00 / 0)
We all agree that the real issue goes back to the voters.

[ Parent ]
It's a pretty hypocritical point of view (4.00 / 1)
seeing as how his (her?) first few comments here were slams aimed at Sewell.  Then (s)he starts in with the "Democrats shouldn't criticize other Democrats" routine (Larry Darby, anyone?), and now it's "only the voters in District 7 should have an opinion" despite not living in the district him(her)self.  I don't live in District 7, but I do live in Jefferson County, and I've seen Shelia Smoot in action enough times to know I don't want her representing Alabama in Congress.

[ Parent ]
Kathy, (0.00 / 1)

I know how you feel, I don't want Richard Shelby, Jeff Sessions and the rest of the Alabama Congressional Critters representing Alabama in congress, but it's because they are conservative republicans who represent the status quo and care more about their party than they do the people.

I've seen Sheila Smoot in action.  I don't see anything she's done that makes her unworthy to represent Alabama in Congress.  If Dick and the rest of the good old boys can go to Congress so can Sheila.

Sheila Smoot is a real person of the people.  Elected officials who are "in action" for the people usually are vilified and demonized by their political enemies.  Look at Dennis Kuchinich and Barbara Lee.  Look at Maxine Waters and Alan Graysoh.  Look at any elected official who isn't afraid to speak truth to power. Look at any elected offical who is a proud liberal and unafraid to fight for traditional democratic values and principles.  Sheila Smoots in action is far better than no action at all.

Not presuming to speak for the commentor, but I think they point they are trying to make is, it doesn't matter to me, or you or probably anybody on this board which African American woman will be elected on Tuesday because we are fortunate to have jobs, 401k's, access to education, homes, health care etc.  But for the voters of the 7th district who aren't as fortunate it's a matter of life and death.

The voters of the 7th district deserve a candidate with the experience and the guts to fight for them in Congress.  They haven't had that since Earl Hilliard was defeated by Artur Davis.  If Artur Davis can represent Alabama in Congress.  So can Sheila Smoot.  She has guts.

Another outsider trying to tell us what to think (0.00 / 0)
If you lived in Jefferson County then you would know what Smoot, and the other commissioners of capable of.  Anybody whom refuses to accept a paycut when the entire county operations are about to go unfunded, thus leaving the county without a full services to its citizenry doesn't deserve to run a lemonade stand on the hottest day of the year.  Stick to the Tennessee Valley because you are clueless when it comes to Shelia Smoot's track history as a county commissioner.  This is coming from someone that lives in her district...
