I'm a Liberal Democrat, Why Should I Vote for You?

liberal definitionThat is a question we should all ask more often, like every time we see a candidate for office.  At the WVNN candidate mixer last week I posed that very question to gubernatorial candidate Bradley Byrne.  Based on his reaction -- "If you're a liberal Democrat, I can't think of any reason you'd want to vote for me" -- it was apparently the first time anyone had asked him.  He looked completely taken aback.  Eventually he got around to talking about his ethics reform plan (which isn't nearly strong enough) but it was obvious he doesn't meet many admitted liberals on the campaign trail.

After that reaction I was sorry I hadn't asked the two Democrats in attendance (Steve Raby and Jeff Enfinger) the same question.  Hopefully the response would have been better, but I'll bet they don't hear it often enough, either.

We're liberals (or progressives, if that's where you fall) and we vote!  Tell us why we should vote for YOU.

Liberal Democrat (4.00 / 2)

When our R and D candidates in HD 73 have a debate, I'm going to ask exactly that question.

And this morning our Boston terrier and I walked past the R candidate's house.  The dog decided to leave a "contribution" at the curb .  That's her way of voting!

liberals (4.00 / 2)

once upon a time there was a democratic congressman from texas named Joe Poole. he fit the typical description of a rural texan -- short and severely potgutted. they aint like in John Wayne movies or Lonesome Dove -- they look like some of you and me. he was a conservative Democrat before there were blue dogs but he didnt scream and holler about it -- he was no pissant parker griffith. he liked to hang around the National Democratic Club bar when the house was in late, arguing jocularly with some of the liberal denizens of the place, like labor lobbyists, other congressmen, staffers. We all knew each other well. Joe drank vodka, which he called vodkee. after a gut full of vodkee Joe would sometimes get confused and see had lost an argument. so, he'd hurl his comeback at the opponent, utter his final statement on the issue, put his "opponent's mules in the stall," as rural people used to say.

"Yew ole liberal thang, yew," joe would yell. and that was that.

Now, when it comes to beating mo brooks, and beating the incumbent state senator (cant think of his name) who can't even produce prize winning barbecue that jeff enfinger faces, or beating this holzclaw from madison who called himself "courageous" for opposing tom butler, or beating all the other republicans determined to spend what it takes to  beat democrats, someone please tell me how it helps to pop-quiz them on why a liberal should vote for them.

I'm more liberal than mooncat (just kidding, mooncat) but i bet we come out about even in a test so  i understand the frustration. Many elections ago, when you voted Democratic for president in Alabama you weren't voting for the party's nominee -- you were voting for electors whose votes was controlled by George Corley Wallace -- remember him?  at least in 2012 us liberals in alabama will know that our votes are going for obama. and, i hope, for then incumbent steve raby in his first reelection campaign.

They don't hear from liberal Democrats (4.00 / 1)

Not ever, apparently.  Byrne, who is not a slow or stupid man, looked at me like I was holding a poisonous snake.

Politicians of all stripes need to hear that there are liberal Democrats in Alabama.  Ditto progressive Democrats here.  And they need to see that we do not have horns and a tail, let alone a forked tongue.

Listen folks, we've confined our voices to the choir for so long no one else remembers we're even here.  I'm saying we need to go out and make a little noise with candidates.  No need to be rude and crude like some of the tea partiers, but politely ask the question: "I'm a liberal Democrat and why should I vote for you?"

Make them at least think about us once in a while.

Work harder and work smarter!

This isn't about making Enfinger or Raby or any other Democrat publicly declare their liberalism (4.00 / 1)
This is about messing with Republican's heads.

Amen... (4.00 / 2)
I'm not surprised Mr. Byrne has not had many folks say that to him, but I'll bet he's thinking about the question now.  You were right to ask and I completely agree it's a question all progressives/liberals should be asking more often.

I'm going to be asking ALL candidates... (4.00 / 2)

It's a good question considering (4.00 / 1)

all those "Truth about Bradley Byrne" ads that have been telling us "he's more liberal than you know."

I always think... "oh really?  That shouldn't be hard because he never struck me as liberal in the least!"
