Alabama Delegation Votes 6-1 AGAINST Extension of Unemployment Benefits

by: countrycat

Fri Jul 02, 2010 at 08:45:00 AM CDT

Every Republican member of Alabama's Congressional delegation voted NO yesterday on HR 5816, a bill to extend unemployment benefits.  Congressman Bobby Bright (D?) voted NO along with his Republican colleagues and only Congressman Artur Davis (D) voted with the bipartisan majority in the House to pass the bill.Alabama unemployment rate

The vote was 270 to 153, with 141 Republicans and 11 Democrats voting no.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows Alabama's state unemployment rate at almost 11% as of May, 2010 so I wonder what these guys were thinking?

We're used to Parker Griffith making an ass of himself.  Same with Aderholt, Bonner, & company. With Mike Rogers, well, what a difference a few months makes.  He voted for an extension on 4/15/2010.

And then there's Bobby Bright.  I wonder how the vote will play in his district?  Was it a smart move to shore up his "conservative" Democratic credentials or will it backfire by reducing the enthusiasm of the Democratic voters he needs to turn out?

I wonder if this is the GOP campaign strategy (0.00 / 0)
Inflict pain on the voters (for the good of thier character), so they will vote Democrats out?

"The War in Iraq is not the disease. The War in Iraq is a symptom. Arrogance is the disease" - Bill Richardson

Yeah, that's is exactly what they are trying to do (0.00 / 0)
However, they fail to realize that everybody isn't as naive as they think they it to be considering how well published who voted how on this bill is all over the internet.  Those Republicans and certain Democrats like Bright better hope that people don't turn the tables on them in 4 months where they will be unemployed...

I'll tell you what they were thinking (0.00 / 0)
They were thinking "11%?! That's way too much we'd have to pay! We can't afford that! Let 'em starve! Praise Jesus!"

Typical of Bright (4.00 / 1)

Can't let those Repubs out-Repub him.

He's also part of that group that signed the letter urging the FCC to get out of business' way an effectively allow them to kill net neutrality.

I've been saying for a long time, the guy is a corporate sellout in Democrats' clothing. He's a better choice than either of his two Repub opponent, but that's not saying a whole lot for him.

"This is not a Republican or a Democratic issue. This is about the whole system being against us." - an Occupy protester at Obama's Des Moines office.

And the sad and unfortunate thing is he is AL-3 on the Democratic ticket (0.00 / 0)
It's also a common problem in most of the South outside of the large urban areas for Democrats, where those on the ballot mostly socially conservative and corporate sell-outs.
