Follow the Money - In Alabama

(The Follow the Money folks are working on this widget, I'm promoting this post to give it another test drive. - promoted by mooncat)

The good folks at the National Institute for Money in State Politics -- one of my favorite sources of campaign financing info -- have released a cool new widget for at-a-glance info on who's giving, who's getting and how much in Alabama state races.

Here's what they have to say about it:

At the top of the widget you'll see the total money we have accounted for for Alabama in 2010, followed by the amount that was raised in the 2008 election. Below that, there are 3 tabs.

The first tab is the general info section. This shows which party controlled the governorship, state house and senate for the past several years. Then is gives information about the number of seats up for election in 2010, as well as the general election date and primary election date.

The second tab highlights our mc50 tool that shows monetary competitiveness in the state. It shows the percentage of districts in the state that were monetarily competitive in 2008, and then the 5 most competitive districts and the amount of money raised in those districts in 2008.

The final tab shows the top contributing sectors in the state for 2010 with the amount they have given that we have documented thus far.

They're looking for feedback, so what do you think?

Interesting site (4.00 / 1)

It goes beyond one-stop shopping for "following the money".  There's a tool called PULSE that compares the fundraising of winners and losers and ranks them by how much more or less than the median they got.

So far, they just have regular elections, not special.  I tried to find the data for the Alabama HD-22 special that Butch Taylor eventually won, and it wasn't there.  But special elections are special, after all, and the site is still great for the data they do have.

Special Elections (4.00 / 1)

We would like to start tracking the money in special elections, because we understand that often times these elections see a huge influx of contributions. Unfortunately, it is a resource issue on our part. We're constantly improving the way we collect, standardize and code data, so hopefully in the near future we will be able to track the special elections. Rest assured, it is definitely on our radar.
