Thanks for the memories, Bud Cramer

(Say it aint so, Bud!  What happened? - promoted by countrycat)

Bud Cramer, our beloved Alabama Blue Dog, who served Alabama's 5th Congressional Seat for 18 years, weighed in on the recent 5th Congressional District seat in an interview with the Huntsville Times.

"I actually was surprised," Cramer said Friday. "I've been watching the trends around the country. ... There's a lot of frustration and anger and hostility toward the agenda in Washington and who's after what. And I think our community is no different than any other community; they want to see our government work differently. But I thought the incumbent would do better than he did."

Really, Bud?  You didn't think the Democratic base in Alabama has come a long way, Bud, and we not only expect more, but demand more progressiveness and moderateness for all our hard earned contributions and walking door to door?

The Blue Dogs in Alabama time's up.  We've been telling you, warning you and so you were still surprised that Parker Griffith didn't do any better?  Even after he kept all that money from his Democratic contributitors only to turn Red?  Really, Bud?

CattyShack :: Thanks for the memories, Bud Cramer

And was Parker still the "incumbent" when he switched parties to Republican? Or is that you, talking Bud?  Makes me wonder what you would have done and how you would have voted under the Obama administration.

"I think Parker Griffith got very frustrated at where he saw the administration coming from with missile defense and space issues," Cramer said. "And I think he saw that his own Democratic leadership was tough for him."

And we think that his votes in Congress encompassed more than that, which also affects Alabamians, such as Health Care Reform and Lilly Ledbetter.

"Remember, I almost lost my job back in 1994 after two years of Bill Clinton. There were plenty of rumors that I was going to switch parties, and I had plenty of conversations, both with Senator (Richard) Shelby and (then Speaker of the House) Denny Hastert about that," Cramer said. "We all do what we think - I hope - is in our district's best interests."

Tell me how equal work for equal pay (Lilly Ledbetter Act) and Health Care Reform are not for anybody's district's best interest, Bud.

Steve Raby, who was chief of staff for the late U.S. Sen. Howell Heflin in Washington, is the Democratic nominee for the 5th District seat. Cramer said that when he was a freshman on the Hill, Raby and Heflin's staff helped educate him.

"We became like family there. I am close to Steve," he said.

But that doesn't mean Cramer is ready to endorse any candidate for Congress. He said he'll be evaluating leadership ability, staff-building, maturity and more to see who is best to assume that position in this atmosphere.

So, Bud, you're leaving us to think that you would not endorse the Democratic nominee?  Why am I not surprised!

"With a Democratic administration, with the challenges this country has, with the personality of this new Congress, we need somebody very skilled," he said. "Now that we are where we are, I want us to elect someone that goes there, builds relationships, gets committee assignments that are in our district's best interests. ...

"Democratic administration," which you ran under, Bud.  Check.  "Challenges this country has"'  Check.  "Personality of this new Congress." Check.  "I want us to elect someone....in our district's best interests."  Really, Bud?

Happy retirement Bud.  Your endorsement will mean nothing to me.

cluelessness! (4.00 / 2)

In late 2002 or early 2003 I was with a group of people concerned about the calls for war against Iraq. I don't remember exactly how this got set up, but I met up with the group at Cramer's office on Clinton St. and he wimped out and passed the meeting on to one of his staff members. As I recall there were 12 of us from disparate backgrounds and I'm sure that some of them follow LIA so I'll let them weigh in with their thoughts, but I was both amazed and astounded at the Cramer staff persons lack of knowledge about the issue. I never decided if this was a pose on his part or if he really had so little grasp of the issues concerning the march to war. I left the meeting with little or no respect for Cramer.  I just remembered that I think Bud Cramer's brother, Steve, was a member of the group. Truly disappointing!

I worked for Cramer (volunteer!) in 1990 (4.00 / 2)

Because he was not only a nice guy but seemed like a reasonable, good Democrat.

Unfortunately, the first big vote that I remember was AGAINST the Family & Medical Leave Act.  I was stunned given his family history of his wife dying of cancer.  How could he NOT understand what families go through?

When I called his office, they read me some boilerplate language that seemed to have come straight from the Chamber of Commerce or National Association of Manufacturers.

I still voted for him after that, but that's it.  I "lacked enthusiasm" so to speak.  He was better than the alternative, but given we're in Alabama, that's pretty poor adulation.

You nailed it, countrycat (4.00 / 2)

We keep relentless pressure on our elected officials -- even down as far as Beauregard Sessions and the banksters' towel boy.

And we encourage every tiny sprout of progressivism.

No more silent aquiescence to conservatism! We resist the politics of hate and failure by any means necessary.

Let them see militant progressives as well as militant conservatives. If for no other reason than to prove some of their constituents can spell.

"Beloved?" (4.00 / 1)
Well, I confess that after a few months of Parker Griffith as my Congressman, Bud Cramer looked a lot better.  But, I undervoted him for years, the same as I undervote my State Sen., Lowell Barron.  The same as I will undervote the Treasurer's race this year and possibly several others.  I'm a progressive Democrat and if you don't earn my vote, you won't get it.  If the party has to hit rock bottom in order to change, fine.  I'm not enabling any more bad behavior.

Work harder and work smarter!

do you mean... (4.00 / 1)

The best thing Cramer did (4.00 / 2)
was the National Child Advocacy Center.  His Congressional career never lived up to that standard.

A small clarification (4.00 / 1)

A small clarification, Gayla - he was one of several people responsible for forming the National Children's Advocacy Center. He is just most vocal about claiming credit.

The comment was really aimed at Bud, not you.  <!--Session data-->
