Shepard runs negative ad, highlights Raby's career as a lobbyist - updated

by: BirdLawyer

(This is a tiny peek at what the GOP would do with Raby's lobbyist background. - promoted by mooncat)

With a week and a half left, the mud starts flying in the District 5 primary

Update: I've replaced the video originally posted with the complete one from Shepard for Congress, as supplied by the campaign.  You can see that Shepard appears right up front in the official version.  - mooncat

This video is less that 30 seconds (4.00 / 1)
and has no disclaimers. Doesn't look like a finished political ad to me. Do you think it was prematurally leaked? Or, purposely put out? Maybe they (or their campaign consultants) have a anti-Raby internet campaign in the works...

Dirty politics 101 (0.00 / 0)
the sign of a desperate campaign. i'm falllllllling and I can't get up.

Money to Larry Langford? (4.00 / 1)

Burrrr, that's political kryptonite!

What are they talking about, his PACs?

Shepard campaign off the tracks? (0.00 / 0)
looks like a Cheryl Basewell Guthrie production.

I thought it was pretty effective (0.00 / 0)
And it seems to have struck a nerve with Raby supporters.

How do we know Shepard's responsible for this? (0.00 / 0)

I went to the YouTube link and it's not Shepard's video feed and his name isn't on the "ad."

I have been concerned that Raby's lobbying history might be a problem just because it's a bad year to be perceived as an insider.  But I don't think much of this video as a tactic for addressing the issue.

shepard for congress was visible (4.00 / 1)
at the end of the ad the first 2 tines I watched it. They have covered it up since then with the "voters need to know the truth" tag.

Public domain aka Youtube videos (0.00 / 0)

are not reguated by the FEC. Thus, it is not illegal to rant and rave in a youtube video no matter who produced it. You could put up a response to the ad and need to attach no disclaimers about who paid for it.

Again, looks like an early cut of a television commercial to me. Thus, the question is, who leaked it pre-tv time?

[ Parent ]
You are right (0.00 / 0)
FEC doesn't regulate unless you pay to place it on a website. Shepard campaign leaked it to get early buzz.

you're probably right (0.00 / 0)
the remember November part now on there is odd though. Whatever, let the mud slinging began!

Shady (4.00 / 1)

At 0:20, the ad says Paid for by Shepard for Congress.  At least it used to.  Sometime this morning, they added one of those youtube labels over the top of it to cover it up.

That's just about as sleazy as the ad itself.

Scrimmages vs. Regular Season Play (0.00 / 0)

There's almost never a good enough reason to put up an attack ad against a fellow Democrat during primary season.  I oppose primary season attack ads in almost all circumstances.

I disagree (0.00 / 0)
As long as they're factual, negative ads have a place.  No one likes to criticize a fellow Democrat, but if there's a 70,000 pound gorilla in the room, it doesn't serve the voters or the party well to pretend it doesn't exist.  The best time for Raby to answer these questions is in the primary.  He needs to prove to Democratic voters he can neutralize the issue in the fall -- otherwise the NRCC will have an absolute field day.

Work harder and work smarter!

The Truth (4.00 / 1)
The truth is we do not need an insider/lobbyist as our congressman for District 5. We need a fresh face, someone who will bring the money to North Alabama through job creation. We do not need someone who will betray the party but stick with it when the going gets tough. I do not like negative campaigns, but this is just simply shedding some light on the truth that has been out there.

There is only (0.00 / 0)
one candidate in the race that fits that bill.

Folks, this is NUTHIN' compared with what the Republicans would do with Raby's lobbying background. (4.00 / 1)
I'm sure Raby has done some great things for Democrats. But I've said it from the get go it makes us VULNERABLE if he is running in the general. I'm not excusing whatever sleaziness has been involved in this.  It won't go away.

Exactly (4.00 / 1)

Every time I hear someone say how Raby is our best shot in the general given his fundraising connections, I can't help but think how the Repubs will have an absolute field day with this.

I think Shepard went lightly on him becuase it's a primary ad, in the general this issue would make for an outright slaughter.  Might as well hand the seat over the the R's.

Shepard runs a negative ad (0.00 / 0)
This  is not just a negative ad, it is a mean-spirited , tasteless ad reminding me of those "smoke-filled" room ads promoted by the other party. This is an attack on a fellow Democrat and it is unnessary. It is not an ad that a true "Southern Gentleman", as Mr. Shepard claims to be, would run against a fellow Democrat.  John Sparkman would turn over in his grave(God rest his soul) if he saw that ad.

This ad is pretty critical (0.00 / 0)

but I don't find it that "negitive," "mean-spirited," or "tasteless." These are all issue involving Raby's business and professional career.  It's not like they attack Raby's family, personal life, or anything like that. These are facts that should matter to voters in the district -- especially when Raby is running on a deal-maker platform. If Raby feels the need to retort with his own critique of Shepard's (or Howie's or Maker's) professional life, then he should do so. Assuming Shepard can prove the accusations, and I am sure a long list of personal and PAC statements will follow in the coming week(s), the voters have every right to know for whom and behind what our candidates stand for. I think it is far better to have candidates vet each other than save these bomb-shells for the RNCC to uncover in October; isn't that one of the benefits of a competetive primary? After all, if a single candidate's staff can discover this information, don't you think the RNCC will comb through every public disclosure and half-baked rumor in what should be a very competive general election?

[ Parent ]
It is interesting to me (4.00 / 1)
that most of the comments here regard the appropriateness of the attack rather than the substance of its message. I'm guessing that this forum is probably not the target audience for such an ad.

This is the target audience for this ad... (0.00 / 0)

Liberals.

He gave money to GOP folks... like... Mo Brooks.

His lobbyist record will be a fun one to delve into in a general, so yall might want to do it now.

Undecided until now...Shepard has my vote (0.00 / 0)
I was an undecided voter until I saw the ad.  After doing a little research, I was able to find out that everything in the ad was factual and true, which is really disturbing to me.  I now think the ad is hilarious.  I agree with an earlier comment, I don't consider an ad "negative" if it is simply stating the facts.  I am shocked to see Mr Raby running with all of this baggage on him and even more shocked to think that he thought it wouldn't come out?  The Republicans would have a field day with him!  We might as well just hand it to them if Raby is elected.

Just wondering (0.00 / 0)
Out of curiosity, what tipped you towards Shepard instead of Howie?  Shepard strikes me as another conservative DINO

Ding! Ding! First time comment here! (4.00 / 1)

Welcome demal10!  Have you been a lurker or did you just find us?

Whichever, we're happy to have you.

I think the concern with some of us (although I don't speak for anyone but myself!) is the tone rather than content.  As I noted in a comment upthread, I was concerned about Shepard not putting his logo, etc on the ad but that's been fixed.  I guess I'm squeamish about using the Raby lookalike in the ad too.

The problem with living in the district is that I know all these people personally and know their supporters.  That adds a dimension that a professional journalist (which I'm not) is supposed to ignore.

But I agree, the lobbyist angle is one that the GOP will exploit and it may be a good thing for us all if we find out now whether Raby can neutralize it.  It's not a good year to be an insider, I think.

I just saw it over at my Mother's house (0.00 / 0)
She was watching the local weather -- not sure which station.  I still think it's a very effective ad, clearly aimed at moving the undecideds who are kind of dithering between Shepard and Raby into the Shepard camp.
