Senator Richard Shelby Demands Earmark Cash in Unmarked Bills

(Washington D.C.) Ucs News: The nations deadly stand off Sen. Richard Shelby entered it 4th day with no end in sight. As the nation's capital cowers Richard Shelby continues to swagger through the halls of power intent on delivering budget busting earmarks to his home state. According to capital police, the Alabama Senator is now demanding 40 Billion dollars be delivered in cash and that Michelle Obama deliver the money dressed in her, in Shelby's words "Stunning", state of the union gown.

Richard Shelby is Alabama's Pork King -- heck, he might be America's Pork King -- but Sen. Claire McCaskill (D, Mo) says his tantrum over defense spending should spell the end of the road for earmarks.  It's time.

Pork King, Schmork King! (4.00 / 1)

His head is quite swelled enough already.  He ain't no King!

He's Senator Dick, at the first cut.

We're not going to call him Senator Diseased Dick until we have confirmed the state of his disease...

Overheard on University Boulevard. On a quiet afternoon. (4.00 / 1)
Like it's ever quiet there!

LOL! (0.00 / 0)
Their are palatial, federally funded, buildings bearing the "Shelby" name all across Alabama.  This guy has literally made a career of shaking the federal government down for cash to put up swanky edifices in Alabama.  It amazes me that lightning does not strike him down when he rails against the evils of Washington, since he's extracted so much largesse from them.

Work harder and work smarter!

what shelby really wants (4.00 / 1)
let's not forget shelby's screwing up the replacing of leura canary.  he wants his choice, anna clark morris, daughter of a contributor, to get the job and that may be more important to him than the tanker deal or other deals. larry morris, anna's father is a big shelby supporter, but i checked and he is also a good democratic contributor.

hmmm... could be something there that deserves its own post. (4.00 / 1)

He still votes Democratic (0.00 / 0)

on a number of issues, like Tort Reform. The one thing you can say about him is that he has remained consistent. He held the same ideology in 1993 that he did in 1995.

And as for the thing about him being a "pork king" the truth is thats what Alabamians want out of their Senators and Congressmen. That's why we send people to Washington for life.

And for a Democratic Senator to get elected here now and survive they'd have to be just as much of a pork whore as Shelby. Anything less and they'd soon be retired.

One of the reasons I am a Dem is because I realize that Alabama gets far more money from the feds than we pay in taxes while northern states get ripped off and I'd like to keep that arrangement. I feel it is payback to them for how they held our region back and mocked us for all these years and plus, well, better we get the money than they do.

the inferiority complex isn't pretty (0.00 / 0)

As I asked in another thread, do you really believe all the stuff you've been spouting the last few days?

Because the apologies for cronyism, corruption, "wink wink nod nod" about adultery, and nostalgia for a "dictator" type governor hardly strike me as Democratic.

DIXIEcratic maybe, but you're a couple of decades and at least a generation too late for that.

Richard Shelby is a Republican (0.00 / 0)
It's interesting that you can make excuses for him -- he's consistent, he brings home the bacon, he has to vote this way to survive -- but I don't think you cut Artur Davis anything like the same amount of slack.  And Davis is most definitely a Democrat -- he votes with Dems on organization and far more often than Shelby on policy.  Not to mention that he boosts the Democratic party instead of trying to tear it down.

Work harder and work smarter!

So his comments about Joe Reed (0.00 / 0)
And other Democratic figures that are opposing him as "part of the problem" aren't working to divide the Democratic Party. Say what you will about Ron Sparks but he hasn't made it a point to go out and make tons of negative comments about Davis supporters.

And if you want to make a contrast (0.00 / 0)

Shelby didn't start voting differently the day he switched in 1994 but what have we seen from Davis. A sudden turn to the right that coincides nicely with the rough time that he decided he was running for governor, a turn to the right not unlike Wallace's sudden change following the election of 1958.

For example, Davis began his career as an advocate of some moderate gun control. He's since pulled away from that. He's also moved to the right on abortion. On economic issues he has been the prototype of a BCA Democrat. Only reason I wouldn't be concerned about tort reform with him is Jere Beasley. If there weren't Jere Beasley that would also be a concern.
