Now that Commissioner Ron Sparks has put speculation to rest, let's get down to the important business of which Democrats we like as challengers (assuming the Tea Baggers fall in line and nominate Parker Griffith) in Alabama's 5th congressional district. We've already seen a nice piece on Public Service Commissioner Susan Parker here and I'm pulling together biographical info on Deborah Bell Paseur, for those who don't know her, but right now I want to share this op-ed (blog-ed?) from State Rep. Randy Hinshaw (D, HD-21).
What kind of leadership do we deserve in Congress?
Over the course of the next few weeks, candidates will emerge to seek our party’s nomination to serve us in the 5th Congressional District. Congressman Griffith’s (R) defection was the political equivalent of a hurricane, plenty of notice that it was coming but shocking nonetheless. His actions are, without question, the most surprising turn of events in recent political history.
Like many of you, I watched as each vote by Congressman Griffith served as a reflection of a political philosophy that was contrary to the man my family knew and supported. My family’s history with Congressman Griffith spans over 15 years and we were friends before we were ever political allies. The Congressman was one of my first political supporters and I am the same Democrat with the same set of beliefs that Parker Griffith supported for public office. I didn’t change; Parker Griffith did.
I have always believed that we should stop sending our jobs to Mexico, China and the Far East and stop bailing out and subsidizing companies that do so. I believe we should stop bailing out fat cat bankers. I believe we should protect the right to bear arms. I believe that we should be strong enough to stand up against discrimination in the workplace. I believe that we should protect Social Security from privatization. I believe that we should support health care reform that puts the care of people ahead of lobbyist’s contributions. I believe that we should support Medicare, Medicaid, children’s health insurance and other “government run” health care programs that the Republican Party wants eliminated. I believe in a strong national defense and believe we should protect our jobs at NASA and Redstone. I believe we should champion the call of the late senator Howell Heflin for a balance budget amendment to the constitution. It’s time to get our fiscal house in order from the ravages of 8 years of “conservative” republican economic policy.
My party is a party of inclusion; a place where people can agree to disagree. I feel quite certain that not every Democrat supports every bit of political philosophy that I believe in. The Republican Party vilified Congressman Griffith in one of the dirtiest campaigns in the entire county. Forgive me for being skeptical that they now support his newly-held conservative beliefs.
I’ve not met any person in North Alabama who hasn’t said to me that both political parties have lost their way. People are just tired of the rhetoric and the inaction and how the people take a back seat to campaign contributions from the big spenders.
The question I keep coming back to is what kind of representative do we need in Congress? The people of the 5th Congressional district are looking for someone who relates to them, a person who understands the issues of working class people. The people of this district don’t need a representative who loses touch with his/her constituency.
President Harry Truman believed in a Democratic philosophy of controlling the debate and “taking the fight to them”. I want to support that kind of candidate.
Note: Randy Hinshaw is in his third term in the Alabama House of Representatives representing Alabama’s 21st district. He serves on the Rules Committee, the Tourism Committee and as the 5th Congressional District representative on the House-Senate Joint Highway Committee.Hinshaw raisedupwards of $120K for his 2006 re-election effort and almost that much in 2004. My personal knowledge of Rep. Hinshaw indicates he's a solid Democrat with a proven record of winning in a swing district (he won a close election in 2002 and was re-elected by 22% in 2006) and an ability to garner significant support from the labor community. His district (see map) is in the northern part of Madison County and includes portions of Huntsville.
Hinshaw may or may not be the right candidate for AL-05, but he would certainly take the fight to the Republicans, a large point in his favor, imho.
