What's Your Congressman Worth?

Seriously?  Roll Call has used information from 2009 financial disclosure forms to assemble this nifty table of the minimum value of assets and liabilities for all 435 Members of Congress.

Assets include stocks, bank accounts, rental properties and other income-producing holdings; liabilities are most frequently mortgages and other bank loans. Assets and liabilites are reported in broad ranges; this table uses the minimum of all reported ranges and subtracts liabilities from assets to produce a minimum net worth.

The Alabama delegation, from wealthiest to poorest:

  1. Parker Griffith (D, AL-05)
  2. Bobby Bright (D, AL-02)
  3. Robert Aderholt (R, AL-04)
  4. Mike Rogers (R, AL-03)
  5. Jo Bonner (R, AL-01)
  6. Spencer Bachus (R, AL-06)
  7. Artur Davis (D, AL-07)

For perspective, the gap in minimum net worth between Bachus and Davis is more than half a million dollars.  Davis is one of 34 members reporting a minimum net worth of zero or less.

What's that you say? (0.00 / 0)
Davis is one of 34 members of Congress worth zero or less?  I'm shocked.  Shocked I tell you.

The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die.~Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D. MA)

Refreshing, isn't it? (0.00 / 0)
After 3+ terms in Congress, it's clear that Artur Davis hasn't used his office for personal enrichment.  Those 34 members were mostly Dems and included John Conyers, Robert Wexler, Larry Kissell and Patrick Murphy.

Work harder and work smarter!

Ironic isn't it? (0.00 / 0)
Davis is in the company of proud, card carrying, liberal, progressive big D Democrats, John Conyers and Roberty Wexler who haven't used their office for personal gain.

The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die.~Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D. MA)

Davis is a public servant (4.00 / 1)

I'm no biographer on Davis, but I believe he has worked in public service since law school.  He has served as a prosecutor and also worked for the Southern Poverty Law Center.  With a Harvard Law degree, he could have easily found a job making hoards of money at a private firm, but he chose the pubic service route.  I think it's admirable and it's no wonder he's one of the financial "assetless" members of Congress.

I don't think there's anything to snark at there, Redeye.

It is not shocking (4.00 / 1)
Take a look at Congressman Davis's resume, comparing it to some of Alabama's other Congressmen, and you'll see why this isn't shocking.  After law school (where he interned with the Southern Poverty Law Center), Davis clerked with Myron Thompson before becoming an assistant US attorney and then a civil rights attorney.  That path is not the most lucrative for a lawyer to take, so Davis did not enter Congress with the wealth that most have (for example, Parker Griffith was quite a successful oncologist before entering the legislature).

It shows to me that (4.00 / 1)
Davis isn't in this for personal gain rather trying to make a difference.  I admire that considering he does have a Juris Doctorate and he opted to work for as public servant and the Southern Poverty Law Center.  Whereas our other state politicos seem to be obsessed with obtaining more wealth and power while crapping on the us citizens.

"Hypocrites are those whom pick and choose prejudices while giving accolades for their own..."

"It is what it is."

Not a bit surprising (4.00 / 1)
if you've ever talked to Congressman Davis. He wants to serve.  He's a good man.
