Martha Bozeman, AL-07 Candidate, Discusses The Challenges Facing the District & the 2010 Election

Martha Bozeman is running in the Democratic primary for the AL-07 seat being vacated by Congressman Artur Davis.

Martha Bozeman - AL-07She briefly addressed the Over The Mountain Democrats at their candidate forum held last August.

Left in Alabama will be covering this race more closely after the first of the year as the candidates begin to campaign harder, collect endorsements (Bozeman's rival, Earl Hilliard, Jr. recently received the endorsement from the Congressional Black Caucus PAC), and announce fundraising numbers.

Most of the AL-07 candidates spoke at the OTM forum, and we'll have that video up in the coming week or so as well - in alphabetical order, so don't read any endorsements into who gets profiled first or last!

Bozeman opened by complimenting both former Congressman Earl Hilliard and current Congressman Artur Davis for their work on behalf of the district, but noted  that she hoped to "take it to the next level and bring much needed action for the district."

The video and partial transcript is on the flip.

countrycat :: Martha Bozeman, AL-07 Candidate, Discusses The Challenges Facing the District & the 2010 Election

This is a district where nearly 40% of young people do not finish high school and a district where the unemployment rate is nearly 15%. In some areas – like Wilcox County – the unemployment rate is nearly 25%.

Also in this district, we only have 1 out of 5 residents who truly have affordable, accessible health care.

These issues will take someone who is committed and someone who will dedicate themselves to solving these issues.

I'm not saying that I'll be Superwoman and put on a cape and do it by myself. It's going to take dedication and commitment from us all. It's going to take us all around the table working with other elected officials on the local, state, and national levels looking at resources we have and at other agencies and really bringing these resources to this district.

This is a very important time. It's a very important seat and a very important election. Please continue to give this race your attention.

Many thanks to the OTM Democrats for their excellent forum and the opportunity to see these candidates in person.

Bozeman is one of the AL-07 candidates I'd like to hear more about (4.00 / 1)

Thanks for posting this.  I'm still trying to figure out who's the most progressive candidate in the AL-07 field and it seems like Bozeman has some potential, but I need to know more ...

This is probably a good place to mention that AL-07 candidate Terri Sewell received the endorsement of the Women's Campaign Forum (WCF) last week.  She had already been endorsed by the National Organization for Women and Lilly Ledbetter -- seems to be racking up the "women's groups" endorsements.

Work harder and work smarter!

I wasn't familiar with Bozeman so I went to her website.  She was doing great until this jumped out at me :).

Among these, she served as campaign manager for incumbent Seventh District Congressman Artur Davis.

What does that mean? (0.00 / 0)
Are you going to hold Bozeman's previous employer against her?

Work harder and work smarter!

Let me clarify (0.00 / 0)

Bozeman was "talking the talk"

That is why Martha will go to Washington as an advocate for working families — people whose needs have been ignored for too long by too many of our state’s leaders. Martha puts people first, with sorely needed leadership in a district where nearly 14 percent of residents are unemployed; where

40 percent fail to graduate from high school; and where one-in-five do not have health insurance.

Until I read she was the campaign manger  for the United States Congressman who voted against affordable health care reform.

I'm not going to "hold it her previous employe against her per se, but I'm going to reserve judgement on her "progressive" credentials, her expericence and her abilities until I know more about what she plans to do and how she plans to do it.

I don't know how many times I have to say this, or how many ways to say this, but it's not about Artur Davis the person/employer/man/husband/offspring.  It's about his political philosophy, his votes and his policies.
