In case you were under a rock this evening or watching football - Health Care Reform passed in the house by a very by a very narrow 220-215 margin.

This only happened with 53% of the Blue Dog Coalition

Missing from this list are  Blue Dogs Bobby Bright and Parker Griffith. They along with Artur Davis can thank these members for providing them cover.

listed below

A number of these also voted no on the Stupak Amendment

Much has been made about the Blue Dog Coaltion as either making or breaking the house vote. Well according to what happened tonight, they did the right thing. Of course Blue Dog districts are those that will likely benefit the most from health care reform.

Those two - Artur Davis and Dennis Kucinich

couple thoughts... (4.00 / 1)
...i'm hearing that a lot of those dems got "cover" to vote no from house leadership, who had the votes they needed to pass and then released those no voters.

as for kucinich...i assume he voted no because he wants single-payer and does not want to compromise down to this bill.

that's right about Kucinich (4.00 / 2)
it was a purity vote. the only other purity vote may have been Eric Massa from New York who was a single payer advocate but also in a conservative district so it gave him cover as well.

Kucinich is Kucinich and will always be. (0.00 / 0)

He is that rarity, a legislator who would rather lose an election than surrender his principles.

Artur Davis, if I read the list right, told his constituents to go F**K themselves last night.  Now, I realize he is aiming for a larger constituency, but what makes anyone think he won't tell the whole state to go F**K themselves when and if it become politically convenient?

This is an important day for me.  It's the day I joined Redeye in the group who will sit our donkeys at home come election day, 2010. Of course, I say that metaphorically, I will go to the polls; I just won't vote for Governor.

Sparks has ticked me off... (0.00 / 0)
but on this issue he seems to have come around.  I am currently in your position but if he continues to improve as a candidate, he could earn my support.  Any chance that could be the case for you?

Anything's possible, bluebearcat, but he has a way to go. (0.00 / 0)

Davis for Gov? (0.00 / 0)
Davis will never get my vote again. IMO he is playing politics with HCR and that is just plain wrong.

Of course HCR would have failed without the Blue Dogs (4.00 / 1)
That's the reason this bill has been held up so long in the House -- first they tried to roll the Progressive caucus to win support from all the Blue Dogs and when that didn't work they had to continually weaken the bill to lure a few Blue Dogs.  That culminated in the Stupak amendment last night which apparently brought in 3 to 5 more votes.

Work harder and work smarter!

but even a couple of those flipping at last minute (0.00 / 0)
would have meant fail.

also shout out to the two new Dems Bill Ownes (NY-23) and John Garamendi (CA-10) who voted on the right side of history last night

In my book (4.00 / 1)
It is what it is.

I knew it was going to happen.  I remembered that Davis voted against ENDA in 2008, but I voted for the Shepard/Byrd Hate Crimes bill this year.

Yeah, that's politics, but I'm not about sacrifice the progressive future of Alabama over one issue including health care reform because to me what goes on Montgomery has more weight with me than this one vote.  However, I'm still going to vote for Davis come next June because anybody is better than Sparks including a pillowcase in my book.

But that's why I'm a pragmatic, yet socially progressive Independent voter.
