ACCR's Bring the Constitution Back Home is Coming to Birmingham

In October, Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform (ACCR) launched a statewide campaign of education and awareness called “Bring It Back Home!” The third in a series of four events will be held Saturday, November 14, 2009, at 9 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, Oxmoor Valley Golf Course Clubhouse, 100 Sunbelt Parkway, Birmingham 35211. This event is free and open to the public.  All citizens are encouraged to attend and learn about the 1901 Constitution.

ACCR’s goals are to bring the power back home to the citizens of Alabama and gain support for a Constitutional Convention of elected citizens’ who will write our next constitution benefitting all of Alabama’s citizens.

Attend and learn “What You Can Do” to make Alabama the Beautiful…Alabama the Better.  For more information, contact Audrey Salgado at 205-437-0951 or audrey@constitutionALreform.org.

Thank you for the reminder (0.00 / 0)
I had no idea ACCR was doing this series -- guess I need to read my mail more carefully, lol!  I clicked through and looked at the agenda and it seems like a great lineup for a very interesting discussion.  They start with Alabama history up to 1900 because you can't understand the 1901 Constitution without understanding the events and ideas that shaped Alabama's political climate when it was formed -- the same events and ideas that are still influencing our state today, often to our detriment.

One final note, if you follow Naive Do-Gooder's link you will see that the last of these events will be in Dothan on Sunday, Nov. 15.  All of y'all in South Alabama should try to make it over there.  This constitution we have is terribly outdated and needs to change.

For a few years now (0.00 / 0)

I've been in contact with several ACCR leaders and members telling them that I (and many other Alabamians) believe that the best, and possibly only, way to "bring the power back home to the citizens of Alabama and gain support for a Constitutional Convention of elected citizens who will write our next constitution benefitting all of Alabama’s citizens" is to get a constitutional amendment passed which will make Alabama the 25th state to have an Initiative and Referendum (I&R) process that voters could utilize to introduce legislation that could bypass both the legislature and the governor and be put on a ballot for voters to approve or reject.

A few lower level members in the ACCR leadership have replied and said that they agree, and that if ACCR can't get our legislature to approve a constitutional convention soon, ACCR may have to jump on the I&R bandwagon.

Why wait any longer?

I'd suggest that ACCR jump aboard prior to Alabama's 2010 regular session of the legislature, and before our 2010 state elections, so everyone can apply the pressure required on all of the candidates for our legislature, Lieutenant Governor, and Governor, to bring I&R to Alabama during the 2010 regular session of our legislature.

If anyone cares to read my suggestion as to how to apply that pressure, go to http://www.doctoriq.com/youcan.htm on my website. If anyone has a better idea, I'd like to hear it.
