Alabama Republican Party Ad: Corrupt Democrats

by: gradyw

Tue Nov 03, 2009 at 14:29:32 PM CST

Will this ad be persuasive? Does it go too far? How should we attack it? What Republicans in this state have been found guilty of criminal behavior?

A couple of key points:

The U.S. Attorney when Larry Langford went to trial - Joyce Vance - a Democrat

so I don't know about any political points being scored with the latest conviction.

Also - Blount and La Pierre have been gone from the State Party for some time. In fact they have not been around much in the ten or so years I've been involved

Siegelman - that's a whole nother story. He's currently out on appeal.

Why were all these cases handled at the Federal level? Because Troy King Republican Attorney General does not prosecute public corruption cases.

The corruption in Jefferson County crosses party lines. There were Republicans and Democrats that plead guilty and were found guilty.

They can keep this ad. If they think it is a slam dunk win and all the voters will cross the aisle then they have something coming for them. That is unless the Democrats in this state don't hit back.

That is one brutal ad.
Almost makes you glad Herman Thomas was acquitted.

I wouldn't go that far (0.00 / 0)
It looks like we might lose the only elected office we have in Mobile County

Please elaborate (0.00 / 0)
I'm afraid I have no idea what you mean by that.

The Thomases threatening to turn a certain part of the voter bloc against him, which would make his re-election very hard nigh impossible.

When I viewed it the opening frame had "has build" instead of "has built.". Someone needs to consult an English teacher.

It has been clear ever since Bob Riley put Bradley Byrne in as chancellor of the 2-year college system that the Republicans in 2010 were going to run on the We Saints, They Devils platform.

Instead of forcing through real hard-core ethics reform that neither party wants, keeping their noses clean and staying away from any hint of trouble the Dems shoot themselves in the foot constantly and then trot out people with ethical issues to speak for them.  And who's brilliant idea was it to have people going around saying people don't care about ethics, I don't care how many e-mails and phone calls one gets or doesn't get.  You are basically loading the musket for the Republicans and handing it to them and saying shoot from two feet away.  It's a can't miss.

Republicans are also diverting attention away from the little problems they seem to have with producing witnesses at contract hearings and selecting their friends for no-bid contracts by getting another bunch of friends to declare it's not really a no bid contract because we say it isn't.  The Dems had at least two-years worth of warnings this was coming.  They chose to ignore it at their own peril.

Some thoughts (0.00 / 0)
A few notes on this ad:

1)  Democrats who are planning to run in 2010 MUST GET SERIOUS about ethics.  As has already been pointed out, they have known that this is will be a campaign issue for the past few years.  They have known that the Republicans are gunning for the 2010 elections and will use ethics as their primary salvo.  (And remember, the last two incumbent Democratic governors were defeated in ethics-based attacks--Folsom in '94, where the plane trip was an issue, and Siegelman in '02, where no-bid contracts were the issue).

In the next session, develop ethics proposals of your own.  Point out the deficiencies of Riley's proposals and develop it on your own.

2)  For the 2010 election, Congressman Davis has done a good job in getting ahead of the ball on these issues.  Ethics attacks will not be successful against him since has already laid out his proposals on the issue, proposals that go further than Riley (including campaign finance reforms and conflict of interest legislation).

Gimme a break! (4.00 / 1)

The Republican poster-child of Alabama ethics Governor Guy Hunt. Its not everyday you get to impeach and convict a sitting governor, but Reublicans have higher standards in all things, apparently.

point taken (0.00 / 0)
but the problem now is that Guy Hunt is DEAD - and his removal from office was almost 20 years ago.

And the Alabama Democrats in the Legislature who haven't passed ethics reform are quite alive and in office NOW.

I'm not short.  I'm fun size!!

Agreed (0.00 / 0)
The Democrats in the State legislature have allowed the Repubs to seize and run with this issue due to their (the Demos) refusal to pass any reforms.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

I can't say I didn't see this one coming. (4.00 / 1)
A couple of points gradyw

The U.S. Attorney that headed the investigation of conviction of Larry Langford was Alice Martin a Bu$h/Rove appointee.  Hold over career prosecutors from the Martin era prosecuted the Langford case.

Why were all of these cases handled at the federal level you ask?  Maybe this will give you a clue.
