Richard Arrington Endorses Ron Sparks, with Video

by: mooncat

Wed Oct 21, 2009 at 23:21:17 PM CDT

Martin Luther King, Jr. Statue in Kelly Ingram ParkEarlier today, literally standing at the foot of a statue of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Birmingham's Kelly Ingram Park, former mayor Richard Arrington threw his support behind Agriculture and Industries Commissioner Ron Sparks as he seeks to become the next governor of Alabama.

The campaign press release included these quotes from Arrington, emphasis mine:

Our nation, state, and communities are facing one of the most difficult economic crisis of our lifetimes.  People are simply looking for help - looking for leadership. All Alabamians face these problems – not just some.  We need a governor that can bring people together – urban and rural, black and white, rich and poor.  Ron Sparks is the only candidate for governor that can do that. The upcoming race for Governor will be the most important any of us can remember.  The next Governor will be forced to grapple with issues of a historically unprecedented magnitude. We need a leader that has a real plan and the courage to address these tough issues.  I believe that person is Ron Sparks and that plan is his platform.

I feel we must support a candidate with the ability to win the election.  After all, if we don’t win, how can we change anything?”

Video (courtesy of the Sparks campaign) and more quotes -- for those who still don't have high speed internet -- are available below the fold.

Remarks from Dr. Richard Arrington:

  • "We need the best political leadership we can get."

  • "The economy of this nation is in a real stall and the economy of this state needs real leadership."

  • "What we need in this upcoming governor's race is to elect the best leadership we can possibly get."

  • "If there was ever a need and a call for leadership, I think we have it in Alabama today.  We need a leader who has a plan. We need a leader who has courage, some foresight.  We need a leader who has experience.  We need someone who is proven.  Ron Sparks has several programs that I think are very important for this state.  And I think would lift this state up and to get us moving again.  So I feel we must support a candidate with the best leadership ability we can get."

  • "Ron Sparks has been elected statewide twice, as you know.  In the last election he carried 62 of 67 counties."

  • "I'm happy to be in a race where we are evaluating candidates on their ability to lead and where race, which has held us back so long in Alabama, is not indeed a factor.  So that is why I'm proud to stand here today, with Ron Sparks, to endorse his candidacy, and I know he will become the next governor of the state of Alabama."

Remarks from Ag. Commissioner Ron Sparks:

  • "This man has been one of Alabama's greatest leaders for the past 30 years. And certainly it is an honor to be standing here beside Dr. Arrington today and receive his endorsement for the governor of the state of Alabama.  ...  We're in tough times and people are looking for answers and that's what our campaign has, is answers for the people of Alabama."

  • "This governor's race is bigger than just one person.  You know the next governor has got to bring Alabama together.  The next governor has got to bring the people of Alabama together.  And the next governor has got to have real solutions to real problems in Alabama."

  • "When you graduate with a diploma in Alabama, we ought to have a scholarship waiting on you on the other side."

  • "Mayor, with your help, we are going to take this message to every corner of the state of Alabama.  And together we are going to build a stronger Alabama."

  • "Dr. Arrington joining our team today is a major step.  It is a major step to bring Alabamians behind our campaign so that we can move Alabama forward."

Ron Sparks responding to questions:

  • "This is a man of vision.  This is a man that has given many years of service ... This is a man that is respected all across the state of Alabama.  ...  We are going to reach across racial lines.  We are going to reach across political lines."

  • "This is my third statewide campaign.  I know what it takes to win in Alabama. It takes hard work.  It takes being honest.  It takes having a message."

Richard Arrington, responding to questions:

  • "This election is all about leadership."

  • "I do not believe that race is a big issue in this election.  I don't think it's a big issue in the equation.  I think many of us in Alabama feel that we have spent too much time dealing with race. ...  And we want somebody in a leadership postition who can  reach across racial lines, class lines and so forth, and help lift the people of Alabama.  I think that is what the Commissioner can do.  I think he's that kind of leader."

  • "I think he's one of the stronger leaders we have here in the Democratic party and we're fortunate to have him offer himself up for governor."

*******************************************

Do I hear some faint praise in Arrington's remarks?  Such as:

  • ... we must support a candidate with the best leadership ability we can get ...
  • Ron Sparks has several programs that I think are very important for this state.
  • I think he's one of the stronger leaders we have here in the Democratic party ...

Obviously, the message of the day for the Sparks campaign is "leadership," followed closely by "race doesn't matter."  Which is kind of surreal considering the event was held in Kelly Ingram Park -- where in 1963 civil rights protesters (including children) were attacked with fire hoses, nightsticks and even police dogs -- and Sparks and Arrington were literally standing at the feet of MLK, Jr.  OK, that imagery might just possibly work, but it's bizarre to say race no longer matters when your press release says "I feel we must support a candidate with the ability to win the election" -- and the only other candidate in the race is black.  Maybe it's just me, but I'm definitely getting mixed signals about the race thing -- is Team Sparks trying to have their cake and eat it too?  BTW, does Dr. Arrington ever smile?  He 's not exactly beaming during the Q&A session at the end.

And the reaction ... (0.00 / 0)
From the Davis campaign, via South Union Street:

"Congressman Davis has great respect for Mayor Arrington's legacy and his leadership but, as Mayor Arrington found out when he supported Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama, and as he recently discovered in the city council elections, Birmingham voters are quite capable of making their own decisions. We are confident that Birmingham voters who have voted for Artur Davis in record numbers in his last two contested races will also make their own independent judgment about the kind of leadership that Davis will provide as governor."

Broken record (4.00 / 1)
Is it me, or was that press conference just a bunch of fluff?  They talk about having a message, courage, "real solutions to real problems," and, glaringly vaguely, "a few programs that will help the state."  What message?  Where is the courage you speak of - you just tucked your tail and ran from the abortion question days ago?  Which programs will help the state?  "Dr. Arrington has seen my plan."  Care to share with us what those programs are?

It's another round of the broken record:  "I support taxing gambling?"  Track 1 on repeat strikes again.  Is there a track 2 on this album?

Every statement that he made that seemed like he might back it up with a substantive remark was only followed by the echo of yet another unsupported statement.    You wanted to root for him for his own sake because it was so blatant...

the impact of this endorsement (4.00 / 1)
For Sparks to win he will have to pull in at least a quarter to 30% of the African American vote in Jefferson County. Perhaps more.

This should be Davis's base in a statewide primary. I think that Sparks basically just said - I'm coming to your base and taking a chunk.

I think that despite Arrington's recent track record in city elections his endorsement will help Sparks get some votes.

I think we are going to see a number of black elected officials endorsing Sparks. Davis will have a number of checkmate moves in response

I agree gradyw (0.00 / 0)
Davis needs to pull 30% of the black vote in Jefferson County, which I believe is going to be difficult for him to do because he pandered to "white moderate voters" at the expense of his traditional base.  As another commentor noted, he can't change his stance on health care reform because it will alienate white moderate voters, but on the other hand, blacks voters are the ones that need and support healthcare reform.  See the problem?

I also agree it's going to be check and checkmate to see who can get the most black endorsements.  *Sigh*

Did I hear "We need a candidate who can win"? (4.00 / 1)

And did it mean, "A black candidate cannot win statewide in Alabama"?

I also heard Arrington praise Sparks for leadership, but I am still waiting for a ...uh...spark of leadership from the candidate.  On anything but lottery, Ron.  We've got that part, you support the Lottery and all the other problems will go away when we get the Lottery.

And Artur supports the Insurance industry. Maybe I will write in Sir Charles on primary day.

LOL! (0.00 / 0)
Sir Charles is looking better and better to me too piggieheart.

I heard "We need a candidate who can win".  I took it to mean just that.  We don't know if an African American candidate can win in Alabama, the reddest of the red states.  We just don't know what we don't know.  If it comes down to a Moore vs Davis, Davis might have a chance, but if it's Byrne v. Davis, I'm not so sure...

I Won't Pretend... (4.00 / 1)
...to know what will happen next June, but I will say this, Artur Davis has a problem. Whether you want to talk about it or not, his pandering to the Republican Wing of the Democratic party is going to get him little in the end. They will not vote for him as they have shown most times when black candidates have sought their votes from Laura Hall to Clyde Jones.  However, his failure to connect and deliver anything TANGIBLE for black voters could be his undoing.

How does anybody know that Arrington is mad w/Davis about anything? Has he said that? Why are some inferring? Can't he make his own decision just like many on this blog say they will? As for Joe Reed, the last I heard, he lambasted ALL the congressional democrats for their most recent stances in Congress (as is done on this blog) and was chafed at Davis not for Hillary vs. Obama, but rather for Davis'obstruction of some federal appointments since Obama took office (See No new U.S. Atty. in the middle district).

Say what you want about Arrington, Reed, Sanders, and Hilliard, but the fact remains that they delivered more tangible results to their constituents than Davis has. This is one reason why they have a BASE! In fact, by being so politically calculating Davis effectively neutered his political impact. So while many want to make this an "old versus new" argument, I hear cricketts chirping when I see what other new/younger black elected officials are jumping on the Davis bandwagon. That in itself should make some of you ask "why?".

It's very easy to demonize the "old guard" of black politics now, but when you consider what they accomplished in THIS state, in particular, one should tip his cap...especially if you're a Democrat!

Holding up appointments (0.00 / 0)
The Senate confirms presidential appointments, not the House and I feel sure Joe Reed knows that so he may have been misquoted by someone.  Based on all I've heard, Shelby is the hold on the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District. And Sen. Enzi is the hold on the Surgeon General. Members of the House just don't have a role in confirming appointees.

Work harder and work smarter!

Yeah, Davis does have some base issues (4.00 / 1)
I've noticed that for sometime now.  However, Arrington isn't going to help Sparks at all because most blacks aren't responsive to his politics particularly those of us who are quite familiar with him in Birmingham these days.  Since it is still early in the game, Davis could still rally up black voters in other parts of the other parts of the state although he is so ambiguous on black issues.  Ironically enough, I've been told that his field office manager is currently looking into strategies to do extensive campaigning for him with black voters.

Isn't it going to be hard for him to campaign for black voters (0.00 / 0)
and maintain the support of "white moderates"?  I think it's going to be kind of hard for him to rally up black voters in other parts of the state after pandering to the right at their expense.

Where are the differences between black voters and "white moderates?" (0.00 / 0)
I'm wondering if we're all that different from each other -- outside of skin color, I mean. Are there fundamental differences in what black voters vs. "white moderates" want from government?

Work harder and work smarter!

[ Parent ]
Evidently there are fundamental differences in what white moderates (0.00 / 0)
and black voters want from government if Artur can't change his position on health care reform because it will drive the white moderates.  Someone said white moderates are conservative, single issue voters who will vote against their self interest.  That is a fundamental difference.  Black voters are fiscal conservatives, meaning they don't mind spending money as long as it's fair and those doing the spending are accountable, but they are not single issue voters nor do they vote against their self interest.

And it's not just black voters Davis is having a problem connecting with, LBGT voters have a problem with his vote against the Matthew Shepperd Hate Crimes Bill, and a lot of women I know, both black and white, have a problem with his semi pro choice views.

I believe it was a mistake for Davis to pander to white moderates who might (or might not) vote for him at the expense of the base who would have  voted for him.  But that's just me.

The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die.~Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D. MA)

[ Parent ]
No its not just you. I agree totally. (4.00 / 1)

I have not forgiven his vote on Matthew Sheppard, nor will I lightly forgive a failure to vote for meaningful health care reform. I do not like his anti-gay stance and think he is dead wrong on pro-choice issues.

Add to that the fact that Sparks has no position on anything but gambling and shows less leadership than a fire hydrant, I find myself examining the Republican candidates, looking for an honest person. (Okay, that is a real exaggeration.)

A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

Actually, its not that hard to maintain both (0.00 / 0)
Especially, if he continues to maintain a moderate stance on key issues while doing proper outreach to the black voters across the state.  The problem for Davis was to entice white moderates to his side on issues (along with getting them more familiar with him) which he has to continuously do.  I say this because he is Congressional district is the home to the largest concentration of black voters in the entire state, so his name is already out there with them but he must informed them of his platform that affects them specifically.

Outreach to black voters (0.00 / 0)
Don't you suppose the new "Get in the Game" promo giving away tickets to the Magic City Classic is a small piece of that outreach? Or at least the beginning of one, signing up supporters and opening a dialog.

Work harder and work smarter!

[ Parent ]
Yeah, that's a part of their ground game (0.00 / 0)
One thing they have realized is that you can't campaign with the same broad strategy when it comes to potential black voters as you do with potential moderate white voters...
