Healthcare Politics, Bill Clinton Style 2009.

Whoa, the big dog is unleashed and barking up a storm! This weekend the Tennessee Democratic Party had their annual Jackson Day Dinner and the headline speakers were Bill Clinton and Al Gore together. What a great event, with 3 thousand attendees and huge media coverage.  Health care was the focus and our former president hits the nail on the head when he hammers home this point to the Democrats in attendance:

I'm just telling you, we need to pass a bill and it needs to be the best bill we can possibly get through congress. But doing nothing is not only the worst thing we can do to the economy and the worst thing we can do for healthcare, its the worse thing we can do for the Democrats. And don't you think that the republicans (with finger pointing now for emphasis) don't know it.

Guys--our Democratic leaders are preparing us for this fight and saying in subtle ways that we may not get the public option, but that we can not frame that as a loss. There will be a bill, and the bill WILL be a great step forward for healthcare reform. If it is not all we want we still must get behind it or lose ground in every political way you can imagine.

John Kerry said recently:

Kennedy would have fought for a public option in President Barack Obama's attempt to reform the health care system, but would opt for compromise if and when Democrats got to that point.

I am pissed off at all the blue dogs and I'm mad as hell at the number of elected officials both "R" and "D" who seem bought and paid for by the healthcare special interests. But politically we must be prepared to fight to the death for whatever comes out in this legislative session. Our future as a party is at stake, and if the republicans win this one we can kiss our hope good bye.

you know, (4.00 / 1)
in my most paranoid moments I sometimes think that the entire country is being turned on its ear to support something that LOOKS like health care reform, and SOUNDS like health care reform, but doesn't DO A DAMN thing to get the working class in to see a doctor...and that insures that the country WON'T have anything like health care reform for the next 50 years. and that basically takes federal money and subsidizes BUSINESS AS USUAL for BC/BS and AHIP, and UnitedHealthcare, and....

something that has ALREADY BEEN BARGAINED AWAY to the health insurance lobby, in exchange for a few crumbs from the table.

like I say, paranoid. ?

I don't trust Bill Clinton (4.00 / 2)
why should I trust Mr. NAFTA on health reform?

screw this.

We want health care reform! We VOTED for health care reform!

If the Democrats can't get it through with the Executive, and both Houses of Congress, then THEY AREN'T WORTH SPIT ANYWAY.

Don't dare bring up the Kennedy name and then tell us to sell out. Get busy and get HEALTH CARE REFORM through the bloody Lobbyist-owned Congress, for a change!

I hear you Julie, and I understand your fear. (4.00 / 1)
I believe that change will happen and it will be better than what we have now and it will make it easier for working class people to see a doctor and it will not be business as usual for the insurance companies.

That is why I am a democrat and that is why I worked so hard to get Obama in office. I have hope and I believe.  I just don't want to put the healthcare legislation in a box that is impossible to get through congress. I'm idealistic, and trying to be politically realistic at the same time.

I guess (4.00 / 1)
we'll see.

Look, we've given Big Pharma a license to steal for the forseeable future, to the tune of 80 billion bucks. We've given up the right to get cheaper drugs. We've given up the right to even BARGAIN for a decent price.

For what? In exchange for 150 mil they promised Obama to help with HEALTH CARE REFORM.

In other words, the horse is out, and it's too late to close the barn door. We better draw the line in the sand and hang tough - cause we've already sold our souls to the Devil just to get this far.

With you on the PHARMA deal. It stinks to high heaven. (4.00 / 1)
But realistically, we are having the fight of our life to beat back the insurance industry. I can't imagine trying to fight them AND the drug industry all at the same time. POLITICALLY it was a good compromise. And if we can get some good legislation through and people are satisfied then PHRMA can be next.

I'm with you julie (4.00 / 1)
Now is not the time to punk out and to be frankful :), I'm tired of being punk'd by the right wing, the media AND the democrats.

WE FREAKING Won!  What part of that is so hard to understand?  I mean, really?  The gop not only lost, but they were completely discredited.  Why should the party that took us to war on DEAD WRONG NTELLIGENCE (enabled by the media), raided the surplus to give the rich a tax break (enabled for the media) and allowed Bush Co. to use our grief over 911 to take us to war in Iraq (enabled for the media), get to decide who lives or dies?  Who has access to health care or not? If democrats can't get meaningful healthcare reform passed they will get what they deserve and be what they deserve to be. LOSERS.

As Maxine Waters says,"Let them define themselves, let them reveal who they really are".  We've given them the rope now it's time to tighten the noose.

Want to know why democrats are having a hard time and are losing the PR campaign?  Four words, the media we have.  I learned about the Clinton/Gore event at LiA not on TeeVee or the other so called MSM.   TeeVee republican/talking heads are whining about the bill not being bipartisain, and the deficit and the cost, and touting the Tea Bag Express, and Cheney saying Obama should forget about investigating torture, blah, blah, blab, blab.

The democratic talking teevee pundit heads are ineffictive.  I want to see the hard left, liberal/progressive wing of the democratic party out front.  Stop moaning and groaning because Ted Kennedy died and take up the mantle.  Don't be afraid to fight fire with fire.  It's time for democrats to grow a spine and to stand up the right wing and the media.  NOW.

The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die.~Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D. MA)

Yes, we need to pass something (4.00 / 1)
Yes, the Republicans know passing health care reform will be their worst nightmare. Unfortunately a lot of corporate donors know the same thing and they're showering money on the likes of Parker Griffith and Max Baucus to make sure real reform doesn't happen.

Reform without a public option can't pass the House -- the the Democratic wing of the House Democrats has seen to that. There are also 50 Senators who have said they would not oppose a public option. So, if we have to do something - and I agree with Clinton that we do - then a bill with the public option is the thing that is doable, and the Blue Dogs should just pitch their little fit and then get over it.

Work harder and work smarter!

I believe the public option can happen. You described our best case scenario (4.00 / 1)
and that is what I want for sure! And I'm ready to ram this through congress!

But no matter WHAT we must ram SOMETHING through and whatever it is will be better than status quo.

something (4.00 / 2)
that has the public option. period.

The Ed Show - in its highly unscientific poll, (4.00 / 1)
shows 87 percent do not support a bill w/o the public option, and only 13 percent would.

A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
