Tear Down this Doctor

There is no substantive reason Dr. Regina Benjamin shouldn't be confirmed as Surgeon General.  We know that because her detractors have been forced to resort to the "But, but, but ... she's FAT" argument.  Namecalling is where you go when you have nothing.

well (4.00 / 2)

so what? She probably has been spending way too much time doctoring those folks who don't pay her, and grabbing one too many Krispy Kremes while she catches up her paperwork...which produces cortisol, which helps you get fatter.

She SHOULD be taking every Friday off, spending more time on her sailing and skiing, and making use of her country club membership. That's the proper lifestyle for an American doctor - not some chubbette who sits in a tiny office WORKING all the time :)

she is an offense to the AMA!

I say if you want a perfect physical specimen, there's always Miss America, or Mr. Universe. She sounds like one of that small minority - a doc who actually cares. There aren't that many any more - people who love their patients, and love their work, and have a genuine calling. Most seem to view Medicine as a stepping stone to riches, not an opportunity to serve their fellow man.

Dr. Koop looks like quite the poop himself. Oh wait, he was appointed by St. Reagan.

Aside from the ridiculousness of the argument (4.00 / 2)

The blatant sexism and entitlement evident in an article that admits it can't TALK TO HER about her weight and just relies on other people deciding what they think of her based on a PHOTOGRAPH? Makes me kind of nauseous.

And then to talk about how she'll be a bad example - seriously? The woman is a doctor whose career is based on providing a service and not on raking in the dough (oysters are delicious but can't pay your rent) and she's a bad example because she's not strolling in like some late-season ER casting? Bzuh.

I heard some of the same crap about Sonia Sotomayor (4.00 / 2)

She's fat, she's diabetic -- and of course the people saying that had no clue of the difference between the Type I she has and Type II, not to mention the reality that there are plenty of overweight people in the US who never get Type II diabetes.

Perhaps if Dr. Benjamin took a page from Oprah Winfrey and went on TV crying and moaning about her inability to permanently change the body God gave her lose weight and keep it off, some of these concern trolls would feel better.

Or not, given that they're looking for anything at all they can criticize.  If she started going to the gym and eating salads (which for all I know she already does), they'd accuse her of being elitist.

Excellent choice. Heres why... (4.00 / 1)

I thinks she's a great choice for all that she's done for the people of the Gulf Coast. I also think it's great that she's a bit chunky. I don't want some thin, pampered dude who lives in a mansion and can afford high-priced fruits and veggies telling me to lose weight.

I want somebody who is real and can relate to other's strugggles with weight issues. People who are caregivers often forget or "don't have time" to take care of themselves healthwise, and if you've read Dr. Benjamin's story, you know she has certainly put a lot of people first. Even mortgaging her home to keep the clinic open for people in her community.

Perhaps,  with this new position Dr. Benjamin will have the time and money she needs to take care of her health and set a wonderful example for the rest of us.

But, Kathy, nobody wants a fat elistist doctor. (0.00 / 0)
Maybe he should have nominated Carrie Prejean, since the GOP is so impressed with her brilliance.<!--Session data--><!--Session data-->

A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
