Standard Operating Procedure

Reading a story just recently about how Lyndie England is having a hard time getting a job. Lyndie was the woman pictured in many of the infamous photos that showed American soldiers abusing Iraqis at Abu Ghraib prison.

This reminded me to post my review of what I think is the most definitive film on Abu Ghraib. It's called "Standard Operating Procedure by director Errol Morris.

Dardango :: DVD Review: Standard Operating Procedure

An Absolute Stunner. Those are the words that best describe director Errol Morris' Standard Operating Procedure, a film about the abuse that was and was not captured in the lurid photos and videos from Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison. Watching this film, just recently released on DVD, is not like watching your typical historical documentary, it is an experience. With eerily beautiful cinematography, amazing computer animation and Danny Elfman's appropriately surreal musical score, Morris places you inside the infamous prison as a virtual witness to the events described by the people who were there.

Among those interviewed in the film are Lyndie England, who became the poster child of the scandal as the woman seen in many photos mocking naked Iraqi detainees, also memorable are retired General Janis Karpinski and Sarah Denning, the soldier who took most of the images the public saw. All of those interviewed seem deeply haunted, and in some cases seem depressed by what was done at Abu Ghraib. But the picture that emerges from all of the accounts is that what took place was more than just the work of a "few bad apples" instead it was the product of a familiar mentality we witnessed for 8 years, in which any end is justified. As one soldier in the film said "You could kill people off camera, you could blow their heads off, as long as it's not on camera, it's ok. But if it's on camera, you're done."

This is a film that every American should see especially as we try to grasp the full extent of the damage done by the Bush Administration to our friends, our Constitution and our reputation in the name of fighting the "war on terror".

Check out the trailer.

Lyndie England ... (0.00 / 0)
And her fellows took a fall for the guys up the chain of command.  No one at such a low level does that much obviously wrong stuff -- and memorializes it in pictures -- purely on their own initiative.

Work harder and work smarter!

There was interview with her - (4.00 / 1)

Last weekend on NPR -  It was pretty revealing - sure it's available as a podcast. She's still catching the blame for increased terrorist attacks due to Abu Ghraib.

Her and her fellow soldiers (0.00 / 0)
have a part in the blame. As a solider you follow orders, unless those orders are immoral unethical, or illegal. We can frame an argument about that statement in a myriad of ways, but specific to this issue, she and the rest of the enlisted soldiers who were found guilty are guilty.  If you look at the photos, you do not see a group of soldiers who were carrying out orders in a professional manner so the excuse they were just following orders flies in the face of reality.  Sure, there was a far reaching chain of guilt in this issue, but the junior soldiers carry the weight of the act.  The could have remembered their entry level training and done the right thing.  They did not and we suffer more for it.

Please consider (0.00 / 0)
the circumstances: a prison filled far beyond capacity by clueless commanders, a pentagon culture that didn't value counterinsurgency knowledge, a sociopathic commander-in-chief dead-set on harshness for its own sake, and an undertrained unit of soldiers from the sticks indoctrinated to believe they were dealing with subhumans who had no rights. It was a perfect storm for abuse. In that environment, you'd have to be a saint to recognize "immoral, illegal, and unethical" orders, much less risk disciplinary action by disobeying them.

I can't buy all that (0.00 / 0)
because I want to continue to believe that people have it inherent in themselves to know the difference between right and wrong.  This is my problem... if the soldiers were carrying out said orders and appeared to be going about the business, maybe I could begin to understand all of those things you mentioned played a role that should take some [most] of the responsibility away from the EMs.  Sadly, they did not, they were amused.... even appeared to enjoy what they were doing.  Goodness has to start from within.  Tons of problems above you shouldn't make you just lose that.

I surely agree that England and the other low-level GIs are guilty. (0.00 / 0)
And while I would probably not offer her a job, I would be far less likely to hire Rummy or Cheney or W, the ones who are ultimately responsible.  I almost wish I believed in Hell, so that I could picture the entire Bush Administration holding a Cabinet meeting there among the flames.

A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
