Are You Outraged Yet?

I've been stockpiling outrageous stuff -- and believe me, if you aren't outraged you haven't been paying attention lately.

Let's kick it off with FAUX News' terrorist worshipper Glenn Beck and his guest, Michael Scheuer, hoping Osama bin Laden will succeed in detonating a "major weapon" on American soil to make government "do the right thing."

The only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States. ...Only Osama can execute an attack which will force Americans to demand that their government protect them effectively, consistently and with as much violence as necessary.

Beck seems downright sad as he opines that bin Laden -- who is still at large because of George W. Bush's failure -- probably won't inflict such death and destruction on America.

They not only hate freedom, they want Americans to die so we'll be willing to give up our freedoms.  Crazy anti-patriots, for sure.

More outrageous stuff below the fold.

mooncat :: Are You Outraged Yet?
1. The Crime and Reward Theory of Government

When powerful private sector companies cause major national and global problems, the "moderate" solution is to give those who caused the problem hundreds of billions of dollars. Crime and reward. Through a conservative-moderate alliance, it is the system of government under which we live, even in the era of the Democratic trifecta.

Damn!  Health care, climate change, financial crisis -- this theory fits our current reality to a T!

2. The Problem With The Public Option Is That It Lowers The Cost Of Health Insurance

And why is this a problem? Presumably because it cuts into the obscene profits of Big Insurance. An even better question is "Why do our elected officials see this as a problem?"

3. Athenae writes a letter to Harry Reid (profanity at this link)

You need 65 votes? You need 100? You need more than both houses of congress and the White House? You need more than that? TOUGH. Nobody said we could get to 60 and we got there for you, so there you are, on a silver platter, is everything you need. If you can't work with that, well then, my God, Harry, I don't know what to tell you. Possibly you need some therapy. I can recommend an excellent woman who will sit you down and tell you, like the sugar-high five-year-old you are, that the world is not fair and we do not get everything we want so on balance let's work with what we've got. What's that? You don't want to appear partisan? You want to grant deference to Republicans? You want to make sure the American people don't perceive you as MEAN? Let me clue you in to something, Harry. The American people like it when you're mean. They get off on it. They think it's funny when the weaker political kid gets kicked.

The American people know, and surely to God Harry Reid understands, that politics is a non-violent substitute for violent physical war. It's serious, no quarter offered nor given, business. We got you the 60 votes. Now use them wisely and well and feel free to twist those arms as hard as you need to. This is the time to demonstrate that Democrats have a vision for the future and can GOVERN EFFECTIVELY. That's the path to your durable Democratic majority, Harry, not this wishy-washy corporatist stuff Ben Nelson is pushing.

4. And about that new politics of bipartisanship ...

My amused disdain was never in the sincere attempt at something “new” by Obama, it was in the ancient political knowledge that opposition parties will…not…let…you pull it off, it seals their fate to oblivion. When Obama proclaims a new way forward free of all the old rancor of the past he’s telling the Republicans: come with me, brothers, as I build one of the greatest Presidency’s of all time that buries you politically for two generations.

5. The conservative ego is enormous:

On July 30, conservatives are 'going Galt,' named after Ayn Rand's famous character John Galt from her novel Atlas Shrugged, and thus refuse to show up for work. They plan to 'call in conservative.' ... If this means businesses lose billions of dollars on that day, fine. If this means that travel will be disrupted, good. If this means communication systems are crippled, so be it. Can you imagine the number of conservatives that work in various sectors of the economy who simply will not work on July 30? ...There are more of us than there are of them. We can shut this country down if we so choose. ...They need conservative employees, who tend to be the most reliable and conscientious. And, it must be stated that some will probably lose their jobs. Thus, your participation is a matter of great sacrifice.

Seriously delusional people.  Go!  Please!  And don't let the door hit you on the way out.  Somebody else will be happy to have your job -- and nobody will have your back since you're all proudly non-union.

6. The HYPOCRISY that is Mark Sanford

Shameless liar, then and now. Republicans have shamelessly cloaked themselves in "character," "honesty" and "Christian values" in order to win elections, but they felt no requirement to actually live up to their promises -- it was just an effective tactic to pull the wool over the eyes of voters. How much longer will we be fooled by these charlatans pretending to be holier than all the rest of us?

7. A bigger majority means more Democratic defectors

That's actually a good thing. It means we can continue to be the Big Tent party and agree to disagree on some points. It also means that Democrats in conservative districts can part ways with the leadership if they need to in order to bloster their re-election chances. On that note, I will be very interested to see how Texas Congressman Chet Edwards fares in 2010 compared to Alabamians Bobby Bright and Parker Griffith. Edwards represents an even more conservative district but he has stuck with his party (presumably voting his conscience) far more than Bright or Griffith, who not only vote with Republicans but often regurgitate Republican talking points to explain their votes.

8. Speaking of Griffith, he'll have opposition from far right County Commissioner Mo Brooks next year. Brooks is the perfect opponent to bring disgruntled liberal and progressive voters back to Griffith in November 2010.

9. Pro-Life Democrats Unite to Protect Unborn Children in Healthcare Restructuring

Do they want health care legislation to "explicitly exclude" coverage for birth control too? How about Viagra? And if they're going to deny abortions (which are legal) to poor women, perhaps they should include funds for government orphanages to feed, clothe, house and educate those children after birth? Bobby Bright (Blue Dog, AL-02) signed the letter, of course.

10. It Came from Wasilla -- a must read from Vanity Fair.

Why did so many skilled veterans of the Republican Party—long regarded as the more adroit team in presidential politics—keep loyally working for her election even after they privately realized she was casual about the truth and totally unfit for the vice-presidency? Perhaps most painful, how could John McCain, one of the cagiest survivors in contemporary politics—with a fine appreciation of life’s injustices and absurdities, a love for the sweep of history, and an overdeveloped sense of his own integrity and honor—ever have picked a person whose utter shortage of qualification for her proposed job all but disqualified him for his?

OK, my outrage closet is pretty clean for the moment.  What's in yours?

The GOP is trying to gin up some outrage (4.00 / 1)

Fail and fail again.

Of all the problems Republicans face today, effective recruitment of non-ridiculous whistleblowers and cause celebre federal bureaucrats has to be rated high on the list.

Their latest coup is an economist who is outraged that EPA failed to bow down to his unsolicited report on climate change.  Boo hoo!

Work harder and work smarter!

You covered most of the bases pretty well... (4.00 / 3)

I would like to add--how about Parker Griffith's office bragging about new transportation money for Huntsville from the stimulus package--despite the fact that he voted against the stimulus!

I missed that! (4.00 / 2)
But I am so not surprised.  Mo Brooks is the perfect opponent for Griffith -- plenty wingnutty to make even me want to go down and make calls to re-elect Griffith.

Work harder and work smarter!

Griffith doesn't deserve a single progressive vote. (4.00 / 2)
But given the kind of choices we get in the 5th district it is simply a necessity. I am not happy with my representation but it could still be a lot worse. The sad thing about that is we have no means by which to hold Griffith's feet to the fire unless we want to go down with him.

[ Parent ]
It's true (4.00 / 1)
I see no signs of a challenger from the left for Parker Griffith.  Based on past history -- Bud Cramer, circa 1994 -- the best way to move Griffith to the left is to make sure he wins big next year.  Because if it's another squeaker he'll move even further right.  And of course, if he loses we'll be stuck with an irrelevant wingnut like Mo Brooks.  Then we'll see real economic pain in the Tennessee Valley.

Work harder and work smarter!

[ Parent ]
Hmmmm.... (4.00 / 2)
Wondering if we could find a good primary challenger for Griffith.  Randy Hinshaw maybe? Or is it too much to loose for anyone good?

[ Parent ]
Vanishingly small chance that Hinshaw will run (0.00 / 0)
He'd have to give up his seat in the Alabama House to run next year.  The whole Legislature is up in 2010.  Unlike Hinshaw, Mo Brooks can run against Griffith and still have his job as Commissioner to fall back on.

Work harder and work smarter!

I totally understand the political reasoning Mooncat. (4.00 / 2)
But I'm wonderin' how to keep him at least a bit obliged to the progressive votes he gets.

[ Parent ]
We need to be a voting bloc (0.00 / 0)
And make sure he knows we have votes he needs.  Moving to the right is the default reaction when our AL-05 Rep. perceives he's it trouble.  Cramer did it.  Griffith is doing it.  We need to break that dynamic somehow.  Demonstrating that he's popular enough to win by a big margin might do it.  A progressive organization that could believably deliver votes could also do it -- those are a bit thin on the ground right now, but we need to work on that angle.

Work harder and work smarter!

Griffith or Brooks. (4.00 / 1)
That's a hell of a decision.

The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die.~Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D. MA)

Vote for the "One" or vote for the "Zero" (0.00 / 0)
We may have to break out the fractions for some of these match-ups.

Jon Stewart on Mark Sanford (4.00 / 1)

Outrageously funny.

Work harder and work smarter!

I believe that Glenn Beck is mentally disturbed... (4.00 / 3)
but what disturbs me the most is that I have family members who watch and listen to his shows religiously and believe that he is a genius!!!  I personally think Glenn Beck is dangerous and the fact that he would have a guest on his show who would say (and Beck obviously agrees with him) that the only chance our country has is to be attacked by bin Laden again is just despicable to me.

As always, Glen Beck had it all wrong....if I was Bin Laden, why not attack (4.00 / 2)
the United States whenever and however you can...look at what crazy policies came out of Washington after the World Trade Center attack.  Most unfortunate being the invasion of Iraq and the lives lost to that senseless adventurism.

It iis almost hard to be outraged by Beck; I believe him to be insane. (4.00 / 1)
but it is real easy to be outraged by his employers, on the one hand, and his listeners, on the other.  He needs to be put away somewhere, not encouraged.

A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
