Senate District 19 Runoff Today

Alabama Senate District 19 mapIf you live in Birmingham you may be electing a new state Senator today.  Democrats Priscilla Dunn and Merika Coleman face each other in a runoff.  The Republican party did not field a candidate so today's winner will become the new state Senator for district 19.  Click here to find out what Senate district you live in.

Merika Coleman has represented House District 57 in the Alabama Legislature since 2002.  She has been endorsed by the New South Coalition, the Birmingham News, Communication Workers of America, Alabama Federation of Teachers and the Fraternal Order of Police.  Rep. Coleman received 29% of the vote on May 12.

Priscilla Dunn has represented House District 56 in the Alabama Legislature since her election in 1998.  She has been endorsed by the local Democratic Women, three former opponents for this Senate seat, the ADC and Concerned Citizens of Hueytown.  Rep. Dunn received 34% of the vote in the May 12 primary.

Both these candidates look pretty good on progressive issues such as repealing the sales tax on groceries, Constitution Reform and so forth.  If I lived in SD19 I would probably vote for Merika Coleman because of the successful hospital bill she sponsored.  I found out about that on her website.  The fact that I was able to find Coleman's website, and it has interesting stuff on it, is another reason I would probably vote for her.

I'm confused (0.00 / 0)
Not too long ago we were told here that issues and campaign websites didn't matter in AL Senate races.  But that was when it was a Democrat running an issueless campaign with a bland website.  Now issues (and the willingness to proudly list them on a campaign website) matter.

Who told you issues and campaing websites didn't matter in AL Senate races? (4.00 / 1)
All I want to know is if each of the district 19 senate candidates graduated from high school.

I hate when I make a typo in the subject line!  Anyway, should have read;

Brian will never touch that one (0.00 / 0)
Which is kind of funny, because I heard Paul Sanford readily admitted dropping out of high school in an endorsement interview.  Why is this aspect of his life something Sanford supporters won't touch with a 10 foot pole?

probably aren't too proud of the fact they "elected" a male high school dropout over a highly educated, experienced, qualifed woman to represent them in the Alabama Senate.  I can't really blame them.

She downplayed the significance of a campaign website in a special election earlier.  She also said something to the effect of "voters care more about personal connections than issues." No time to find direct quotes now. Knock yourself out if you're curious.

I've never asked Paul whether or not he graduated from high school.  Of course, I can't recall ever asking anyone that question.  Whether he did or didn't is about as relevant as whether Bill Gates graduated from college.  Paul did graduate from the Culinary Institute of America and has subsequently, along with his wife, operated a successful small business.

I certainly encourage everyone to complete high school and, if possible, college.  It increases your odds of success in life.  That being said, I find it hard to hold someone's academic record against them once they prove themselves in the real world.  By the same token, a stellar academic record means nothing once you get a job and are not able to pull your own weight.

I know you're confused (0.00 / 0)

Who can blame you?  A lot of Republicans are confused these days.  The much touted "Party of Family Values" has turned out to be the "Party of Adulterers and Hypocrites."  Maybe this TPM flow chart will help you make sense of it all.

Republican Sex Scandal Flow Chart

Seriously, I've always cared about issues, but I recognize that many voters base their decision on something else.  Maybe it's looks or who knocked on the door or who the preacher endorsed, but it isn't issues.  While I appreciate a good, regularly updated website as a source of information, I'm not going to cast my vote strictly on the basis of who has the best website.  Merika Coleman's website has information about her past efforts and accomplishments -- and endorsements -- which resonated with me.  Priscilla Dunn may have done things right up my alley as well, but I couldn't find them, so today my snap judgement is Coleman.  As you know, an effective ground game is critical to winning a special election and I have no idea which of these two candidates has done the ground work to turn out their voters today.

well, if it's on the interwebs it must be true (0.00 / 0)

The FOP did not endorse Coleman over Dunn.

Coleman used robocalls the day before the primary to claim the endorsement of the AEA.  AEA did not make an endorsement.

Coleman refused to participate in the JeffCo delegation's deliberation on the occupational tax.

She sounds like a real winner to me.

You sound like a Dunn Supportor to me. :) (4.00 / 1)

Has AEA still not endorsed? (0.00 / 0)
As for the FOP, the Coleman website clearly lists endorsements from the Fraternal Order of Police and the Police Benevolent Association.

Low Turnout in SD19 (0.00 / 0)

Per an election official.

Election officials hadn't counted the number of votes cast by mid-afternoon, but Hill said election inspectors at the polling sites are reporting low voter turnout.

It's a shame, but folks just don't get very involved in special elections, even for the Legislature.  Maybe even especially for the Legislature

Priscilla Dunn wins in SD19 (4.00 / 1)

Per WSFA:

With all but one precinct reporting Tuesday night, Dunn had 3,444 votes, or about 56 percent, to 2,705 for Coleman, or 44 percent.

Congratulations to the Senator-elect Dunn.  Stay tuned for a special election in House District 56.

Bessemer likely provided margin (4.00 / 1)

As expected Dunn won by a rather large margin despite Coleman putting up a good fight. The strength of Priscilla Dunn and her husband Grover (the cutoff Tax Collector) was too much for Coleman to overcome.

Coleman might  have trouble in her house re-election bid because of what has been deemed some bizarre behavior over the last few months. Will be interesting to see if she decides to challenge Dunn in the 2010 election.

No idea on who will run for the House 56 seat - that will be an interesting contest

Very low turnout (0.00 / 0)
Slightly more than 8% of registered voters in SD19 cast a ballot yesterday.  And please note that Coleman's superior website was not enough to give her a win.

Work harder and work smarter!
