Jeff Sessions Shooting His Mouth Off About Gitmo

Dear God!  Does Jeff Sessions believe this crap or is he just pandering to the Rush worshipers on the right?  Regarding continued detention of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay:

"They wouldn't be treated any better in the United States, and they wouldn't have the tropical breezes blowing through," Sessions said.

The International Red Cross has conducted interviews with roughly 2,000 prisoners who have come through the Guantanamo Bay site, issuing reports that have raised frequent questions about the medical conditions of the detainees and their access to lawyers.

From an Amnesty International report on conditions at Gitmo.

Built to accommodate around 178 detainees, the compound known as Camp 6 is surrounded by high concrete walls with no windows visible on the façade. Inside, detainees are confined for a minimum of 22 hours a day in individual steel cells with no windows to the outside. The only view from each cell is through strips of glass only a few inches wide in and adjacent to the cell door which looks onto an interior corridor patrolled by military police. There are no opening windows and detainees are completely cut-off from human contact while inside their cells.

...

Contrary to international standards, the cells have no access to natural light or air, and are lit by fluorescent lighting which is on 24 hours a day and controlled by guards. The lighting is reportedly dimmed at night, although it is unclear by how much. The only source of air in the cells is from air-conditioning controlled by guards. Lawyers who visited detainees in January 2007 reported that they consistently complained of being too cold in the steel cells, with the air-conditioning turned up too high.9 One lawyer has described how in the visiting room her client was huddled on the floor, trying to warm himself with his arms and was too cold to sit on the chair. ...

Emphasis mine.

The detainees in this facility aren't enjoying the tropical breezes, the nice sunshine or any other part of their lives.   The Club Gitmo myth is an entertaining lie fabricated to amuse Rush's tough guy listeners - you know, the ones who neglected to serve in the military and thus have no interest in the humane treatment of prisoners.  It's shocking that a United States Senator would buy into one of Rush's BS talking points.

I am afraid the embarassment is only beginning. (4.00 / 3)

Can you imagine how horrible it will be when the Supreme Court hearings begin and he is leading the questioning for the Republicans?

I just saw a liberal posting on Huff Post--someone wants to split off the southern states from the USA because what they hear and see coming from our part of the world is so pitiful.

I do love being a southerner. I don't know which is worse, our pathetic elected leadership or being marginalized by the left for where we live. Both suck.

JeffBeau may be elected, but he ain't leading anybody (4.00 / 2)
He's just running his mouth.

Hey, now you have an idea... (4.00 / 3)
...what it was like growing up in Florida and being told by other Southerners that I wasn't Southern,.

A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

I worked at Pratt & Whitney in West Palm Beach as a co-op student (4.00 / 2)

And I was frequently reminded by all the local transplants (from New England and Canada) that I "had an accent".

My answer was "Me? Accent? Why, I talk just like the guy on the 7 o'clock news!" in the flattest Arkie drawl I could manage.

These GOPosaurs kill me (4.00 / 2)

They're either saying the Gitmo prisoners can't be moved because they'll pine away without the tropical breezes, or they'll be turned loose on the streets in Everytown, USA, to wreak havoc.

After they've culled out all the prisoners who were in Gitmo only because somebody in a rival tribe turned them in at random to collect the U.S. bounty and screw over thier tribe, there will presumably be a hard core of hard cases left over.  What do do with them?

Well, guess what? We already have a prison in the US for real terrorists.  The Supermax facility in Florence, Colorado, is where we keep beauties like Eric Rudolph, Terry Nichols, and Ted Kaczynski.  Remember them?  Our own homegrown, non-Islamic, apple-pie terrorists?

Once they've been judged in a court of law as deserving of confinement, we have a place for the worst of Gitmo.  Repubs can sleep in thier beds, safe and sound, with thier blankies and the nightlight on and the closet doors closed...

"tropical breezes?" What a putz. (4.00 / 1)

Hey, if he think's it's that great, I'll personally make the first donation into a "Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III Gitmo Vacation" fund.

Let's make it a long one.

I'm not short.  I'm fun size!!

If there were ONE person in the WORLD (4.00 / 1)

whom I could send to Guantanamo and have EVERY SINGLE THING that was done to the people who've been tortured there...

it would be that racist motherfucking douchebag.

And I am against torture in every single situation, period.

EXCEPT FOR JEFF fucking SESSIONS.

There is ALWAYS an exception.

And he... is it.And the ONLY reason I'd want him tortured is...

Because we can't lynch, tar and feather people anymore.
