Some Election day Rules

A few common election day problems

1 - Campaigning is not allowed with  30 feet of a polling place - This includes handing out literature and/or urging someone to vote for a particular candidate, this includes campaign workers and candidates.

2 - You may wear buttons, tee shirts etc espousing a candidate into the polls unless you are a poll worker or poll watcher. you can not linger in the polling place however, vote and exit.

3 - You may request assistance in voting and you may request whoever you choose including a candidate or campaign worker - you do not have to accept a poll worker as an assistant

4 - You may carry a sample ballot into the polls

5 - If you are a registered voter and your name does not appear on the poll workers list you may ask to vote a provisional ballot, formerly known as a challenged ballot. Your registeration will be checked by the Voters Registars office and if you are registered the vote will be counted.

6 - If the poll list shows you should be voting in another polling place you may also vote a provisional ballot (for example if you changed addresses) - important in local races

7 - If you are in line when the polls close, poll workers must allow you to vote.

8 - You do have to show an approved form of identification

9 - If you insist on voting naked and are over the age of 35, you must vote absentee.

#9 is a doozie (4.00 / 1)
And I don't recall seeing it at the Secretary of State's website.  Thanks for the timely info and the chuckle.

If I'm under 35..I can vote naked?  Hmm..  I think maybe I should keep my clothes on for this one.  LOL

Earlier today we were talking about ... (4.00 / 1)
"no drama" Obama.  I'm thinking this might be too dramatic for Alabama polling places.  We want your vote to count!

On the subject of rule #9 (4.00 / 2)

Not to be confused with Love Potion #9 - but I digress...

Don't do anything naked at the polling place that you would not do at the Courthouse.

I would not do anything naked at the Madison County Courthouse.  But that's just me, I'm timid.

If you are a really hot Republican, just stroll on down there naked and exercise your naked right to vote.

And if naked just doesn't feel right - why, then try nekkid!

Some Election Day Rules (4.00 / 1)
Do you have a specific list for poll watchers? I am thinking of doing this in 03, or driving folks to the polls. I already voted. It was the most uplifting experience I have ever had.

Poll Watchers (4.00 / 1)

This is the Poll Watcher section from a Poll Worker handbook produced by the Secretary of State:

NUMBER:
1.    In general elections, there may be one watcher in the voting place for each party or organization which has nominated candidates (§17-6-8).
2.    In primaries, each candidate may have a single watcher in the voting place (§17-16-26).
A.    APPOINTMENT:
i.    In general elections, a watcher must be “duly appointed” (§17-9-29) by the chairman of a party’s county executive committee, or by a nominee, or by a beat committeeman (§17-6-8).
ii.    In primaries, a watcher must have a written appointment signed by a candidate (§17-16-26).
B.    OATH:  The watcher shall be sworn to faithfully observe the rule of law prescribed for the conduct of elections (§17-6-8).  The oath is printed on the back of the poll list.
C.    PRIVILEGES:  Watchers may remain in the voting place and see all activities and records throughout the day (§17-9-29, §17-16-26).
D.    LIMITATIONS:
i.    Poll watchers must not disturb or attempt to influence voters, campaign, or electioneer (§17-8-41, §17-16-26, §17-23-3, §17-23-8).  They must not display buttons or other campaign materials for any candidate or cause.
ii.    Poll watchers may not act as election officials (§17-16-26).
POLL WATCHERS

This part deals with electioneering and may also be useful:

A.    ELECTIONEERING:  Election officials must run the polling place in a strictly impartial manner (§17-8-41, §17-9-25, §17-16-55).  Election officials must not attempt to influence voters.  Poll workers should pick up and throw away any campaign material left by voters inside the polling place.  Election officials (and watchers) should not wear campaign buttons, ribbons, etc.

B.    SAMPLE BALLOTS:  Voters may carry prepared sample ballots into the polling place for use in the voting booth.  This is not electioneering so long as the voter does not attempt to influence other voters within the polling place.

C.    LOITERING:  No loitering is allowed within 30 feet of the polling place.  Only voters, persons assisting voters (after formal request for assistance), election officials (including watchers), the sheriff, and deputies are allowed in the polling place.  Voters and persons assisting voters must immediately leave the polling place after voting (§17-7-8, §17-8-29).

D.    DISTURBANCES:  Intoxication or disorderly conduct is not permitted in the polling place (§17-1-2, §17-16-47).

In case of ELECTIONEERING, LOITERING, or DISTURBANCES, ask the person to stop or to leave the polling place.  If the person refuses to leave, call the sheriff (§17-1-2, §17-16-56)

Great diary, OP! (4.00 / 1)

Regarding #9, maybe we need some "clothing optional" polling places.  I'm betting that it would increase turnout in places with high concentrations of models, co-eds, and military bases!
